To give my ex house mates details to the student loans company?`

I've been contacted by investigators working for the student loans company as they are trying to track down one of my ex house mates from university. It seems that he's not been in touch with them or paid back a single penny of his loans since we graduated in 1997. He actually told me at the time he was planning not to pay it back which I thought was bad at the time but never thought he'd carry it through

I know who he works for though not his home address. The loan would only have totalled about £7k but there will have been quite a bit of interest added on by now. AIBU if I pass on hte information I have or should i mind my own business? Really in 2 minds about getting involved with this

If he is making payments then he has nothing to worry about it. Shop the freeloader. If he looks bad at work then he only has himself to blame.

The Student Loan Company did not exist in 1997.

He may owe money, but it certainly isn't to them.

You should report these callers to the police, and do not give details.

old loans got transferred to the slc in a lot of cases though. i know an ex of mine has his loan taken over the slc. and he was prior to 1997.

MAYBE Woahhh, steady on you'll do yourself some damage if you don't calm down.

I believe that education up to and including a first degree, should be free. I also believe that there should be a maintenance grant available to every university student, equivalent to the amount 'paid' to those of the same age on jobseekers or whatever it is called these days. I have no sympathy for the idiots who administer the current scheme - DC1 is about to enter 3rd of 4 years and has never had a finance application that was assessed correctly first time. However, if you make an application for a loan, you have to agree that subject to certain conditions, you will pay it back. And regardless of whether or not it is ever paid back in full, you should still pay back according to the rules that were in effect when the loan was created. And frankly, if the loan was around £7k, even after all this time it is still not going to be anywhere near the level of loans that current students will have to pay back - DC1 is looking at around £27k and those starting this September will be looking at around £37k minimum. £7k sounds like a bargain compared to that!

MelanieSminge · 19/08/2012 00:17

YABU, you are not working for the company, they have private investigators to do this.

Fourfingerkitkat · 19/08/2012 00:26

He's being unreasonable to expect not to pay it. I think a first degree should be free, in an ideal world....but we don't live in an ideal world. As others have already said he entered into an agreement, as an adult, and should adhere to this agreement. Whether or not you actually want to get involved is another matter. A family member works for SLC and from what she says they have numerous ways of tracking people down. If it was me, just because I'm a bitter, skint bitch who is f**king sick of people saying "oh did you pay your student loan back ? I haven't......" I'd shop him...but that's just me being bitter and twisted...

aloiseb · 19/08/2012 00:36

I would not pass on details because why should SLC be bothering friends / private people over somebody else's debt?

In my university job I am not allowed to give out names and addresses because of the Data Protection Act. Not even to the police, if they call for details of an ex-student: there are proper channels for them to use if they want this information, which do not involve tracking down old housemates.

iscream · 19/08/2012 02:33

I wouldn't. Why deliberately cause him a problem? Yes, he should pay his loan. but it is not your business. Let the investigators find him via his driving record or something, they are getting paid to do it.

SoleSource · 19/08/2012 11:25

I couldn't but he owes the money. He should pay it back like others do.

Sparks1 · 19/08/2012 11:34

It seems that he's not been in touch with them or paid back a single penny of his loans since we graduated in 1997

In which case they won't be able to enforce payment anyway because of the statute of limitations. They can ask him to pay it back but they can't legally enforce it.

ontheedgeofwhatever · 19/08/2012 11:45

Thanks for info about statute of limitations - for some reason I didn't think it applied to student loans but I've just checked and it does to loans taken out before 1998 though the law seems a bit grey after that.

Maybelater - calm down - get therapy if necessary you sound very, stressed, wound up and somewhat paranoid if I may say so. I hope you feel better soon
