To give my ex house mates details to the student loans company?`

I've been contacted by investigators working for the student loans company as they are trying to track down one of my ex house mates from university. It seems that he's not been in touch with them or paid back a single penny of his loans since we graduated in 1997. He actually told me at the time he was planning not to pay it back which I thought was bad at the time but never thought he'd carry it through

I know who he works for though not his home address. The loan would only have totalled about £7k but there will have been quite a bit of interest added on by now. AIBU if I pass on hte information I have or should i mind my own business? Really in 2 minds about getting involved with this

I wouldn't pass his details on tbh.

But I think most people who post on here will think you should.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 17/08/2012 19:32

My memory is bad but I was pretty sure. My small student loan was to make ends meet because I blew my allowance from my parents on beer Blush Those were the days. I didn't realise how lucky I was at the time.

I would probably have told the SLC the truth as well but felt guilty as I did it. But it's the right thing to do. I'm amazed he's evaded them for so many years.

FushiaFernica · 17/08/2012 19:32

It sounds like SLC have passed the debt onto a bailiff company, if you are happy for your ex housemate to be threatened by all means tell them-I certainly wouldn't.

Noqontrol · 17/08/2012 19:34

I wouldn't pass them on either. Education should be free and thats one case I'd keep my sticky beak out of Wink

Noqontrol · 17/08/2012 19:37

It was to make ends meet dontstepon,.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 17/08/2012 19:40

Yes but the education was free back then. But people had student loans for rent etc. I was luckier than most, as my rent was paid by my parents. But there's no way they could have afforded the tuition fee's that are now expected. It's hideous.

Anyway I am derailing the thread with my ramblings Blush Sorry OP.

YANBU. Everyone else has to pay it back so why not him?

spoonsspoonsspoons · 17/08/2012 19:45

Do you think he earns over the threshold for paying back? Giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he hasn't given it much thought as he wouldn't have to start repaying?

I know plenty of people who took out pre-1998 loans who've never had to pay back a penny.

spoonsspoonsspoons · 17/08/2012 19:47

Currently you can defer if you earn less than £27,734 per year

GhostShip · 17/08/2012 20:02

How come my DP has to pay his then, spoons he earns under 27k

spoonsspoonsspoons · 17/08/2012 20:03

The 27k figure applies to pre-1998 loans only.

GhostShip · 17/08/2012 20:04

Ah right, thankyou

EasilyBored · 17/08/2012 20:07

I think if you earn under about £15K, then you don't pay anything, and less that £27 you can ask to defer it, maybe? The current payback system is a joke. Since leaving 4 years ago, I have not earnt enough money to start paying it back, except one month where I was backpaid a payrise, and I paid about £15. If you earn over £15k, you pay back 5% of your earnings, over that threshold. So if you earn £15 100 a year, you pay back 5% of the £100. I will never ever pay off all my loan, unless I randomly manage to get a job paying hundreds of thousands of pounds. The loan company wont even tell me how much I owe, or how much interest I'm being charged.

So on the grounds that the company is fucking ridiculous, I wouldn't bother passing on his address. I'm sure they'll find him eventually.

Tiago · 17/08/2012 20:20

I would pass on his details. If you borrow money, you pay it back. I've worked damned hard to pay off mine.

If he didn't want to pay he should have taken a legitimate way out and left the country to work in somewhere like China as a TEFL teacher. If you move abroad and don't earn enough, they freeze the loan (which I benefitted from for 2 years). Or, given when he got the loan, he swhould have declared bankrupt (which erased student loans until they closed the loophole).

sarahtigh · 17/08/2012 21:02

I am in two minds about whether you should pass details on, on one hand you should pay back money you owe but on the other hand SLC are ridiculous they harassed my sister for 15 months after she had paid last bit back, she had proof from them it wa s clear yet still ringing both her and my mother up. So I have little sympathy with them as they behave badly. I do not think i would pass on an address, it is illegal for baliffs to call on someone at work or tell their colleagues about debts, so by passing work address on you may not be acting wisely

but legally you do not need to and you are not commiting any offence by not giving the information, no-one can accuse you of being an accessory to fraud as you did not help him obtain the money

OatcakeCravings · 17/08/2012 22:03

I don't see why this is any of your business to be honest. I would stay out of it. I had a pre-1998 loan which I paid back and more. They didn't send me any statements for the last two years I was paying them and they took about £900 extra from me. I spent years trying to get it back but finally gave up. The stupidity of the people I was trying to deal with was astounding I was surprised they managed to get up and out to work.

CanoeSlalom · 17/08/2012 22:08

If they're chasing him then he either owes the money, or should have let them know he was eligible to not pay it back yet. If he doesn't pay it back it's just more expense to the honest taxpayer.

TooMuchRain · 17/08/2012 22:21

YABU - SLC are absolute gits

queenofthepirates · 17/08/2012 22:31

Sorry but that's nonsense jumping, in 1997 there were no student fees to pay and a lot of us got grants as well (myself included). I took out the generous student loan at a very good rate of interest to help pay for housing. Our education was free at the point of delivery and this bloke is right royally pissing on that by refusing to pay it back.

manticlimactic · 18/08/2012 00:28

Is there a statue of limitations on collecting debt?

manticlimactic · 18/08/2012 00:28

*statute

Viperidae · 18/08/2012 00:31

This is the same as benefit fraud or tax dodging. I would report him.

BorisTheBold · 18/08/2012 00:44

I wouldn't pass on any details. The SLC are a bunch of incompetent rude fuckwits and since you don't work for them why should you involve yourself?

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 00:58

Entitled leeches on society are ruining it for everyone so shop the flaky feckless deadbeat.

JennyPiccolo · 18/08/2012 01:14

I wouldn't 'shop' him. For all you know he's been making some payments or isn't eligible to pay back, and it'll look bad for him if they start hassling him at work.
