So when did second hand become vintage?

Hmm

When I was growing up anything second hand was "meffy", now "vintage" Hmm is cool. I've got nothing against second hand stuff, have bought and sold own fair share of stuff via ebay. Love getting hand me downs off people for the kids, and I have been known to scour charity shops for bargains.

But come on call it what it is, it's bloody second hand FFS! My sister blathers on about all her "vintage" clothing I'm so tempted to turn around and say "You mean second hand," but instead bite my tongue. DSD is the same, she has "vintage" clothes, one item being a suede jacket her aunt gave her from the 90's. It's bloody second hand! "Vintage" is just a snobby way of saying you wear second hand but your sooooo cool it's "vintage". Hmm

Can you tell it annoys the crap out of me? Grin

WorraLiberty · 17/08/2012 16:38

"Pre owned" bugs the crap out of me Grin

Kladdkaka · 17/08/2012 16:39

Do you remember the school jumble sales? :o

StaceeJaxx · 17/08/2012 16:40

Oh god yes "pre-owned" or even worse "pre-loved". Hmm

School and church jumble sales were great.

usualsuspect · 17/08/2012 16:41

It's like people have to find a cool name for everything these days.

LesleyPumpshaft · 17/08/2012 16:42

I like vintage --second hand-. Vintage does sound much better than second hand doesn't it. Grin

MadStaringEyes · 17/08/2012 16:44

Nearly new makes my head itch.

Vintage is older than just second hand, isn't it?

NameChangeGalore · 17/08/2012 16:47

YANBU. I thought vintage referred to old designer clothes. Not a second hand top from bloody Primark from the 90's

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/08/2012 16:50

I agree. Someone was talking about having a vintage 70's coat on a thread the other day.
Nothing looked good in the 70's, I have the photos to prove it.

usualsuspect · 17/08/2012 16:51

Me too LBE Grin

WorraLiberty · 17/08/2012 16:53

To me, vintage will always be 50's and earlier.

The day someone describes anything from the 80's as vintage, they're going to get a smack in the mouth and I'm going to run off sobbing Grin

usualsuspect · 17/08/2012 16:53

I should have kept my afghan coat maybe that would be vintage by now.

StaceeJaxx · 17/08/2012 16:57

Worra there's a shop in the city centre here (Liverpool) that sells "vintage" 70's, 80's AND 90's clothes. Hmm

Nice vintage shell suit anyone?

WorraLiberty · 17/08/2012 16:58

LA LA LA LA LAAAAAA

StaceeJaxx · 17/08/2012 16:59

Ha ha, I should have kept my fluorescent pink shell suit shouldn't I. Grin

Tryharder · 17/08/2012 17:06

Agree 100%. I will concede that an original 20s Chanel suit might warrant the description of "vintage". There is a second hand shop in my town selling vintage clothes at exorbitant prices and to be honest, it's jumble sale stuff.

ScooseLooseAbootThisHoose · 17/08/2012 17:07

Arf at meffy love that word!

ScooseLooseAbootThisHoose · 17/08/2012 17:08

I knew you were a fellow scouser op Smile

Babyrabbits · 17/08/2012 17:15

I agree, it has to be old to be vintage. 70,s i might class as vintage as i was only tiny but decades i can remember are not vintage.

We have a vintage\ designer shop near and its shockingly expensive. I actually wandered round gasping at the lunacy of the pricing!!

Its still secondhand!

JumpingThroughHoops · 17/08/2012 17:16

Original term for vintage was 60+ years.

squoosh · 17/08/2012 17:18

A flapper dress from the 1920's is vintage.

A denim jacket from 1996 is second hand.

My self monitoring wankery levels prohibit me from referring to any secondhand clothes as 'vintage'.

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/08/2012 17:21

Oh yes the 70's usual
The decade that fashion forgot.
I had an Afghan coat too.

NarkedRaspberry · 17/08/2012 17:26

It's about us getting older Grin.

When I was a teen in the 90s, 1960s/70s stuff was 'vintage'. It's now 2012. It's totally reasonable to call 80s/90s stuff 'vintage'
