So when did second hand become vintage?

Hmm

When I was growing up anything second hand was "meffy", now "vintage" Hmm is cool. I've got nothing against second hand stuff, have bought and sold own fair share of stuff via ebay. Love getting hand me downs off people for the kids, and I have been known to scour charity shops for bargains.

But come on call it what it is, it's bloody second hand FFS! My sister blathers on about all her "vintage" clothing I'm so tempted to turn around and say "You mean second hand," but instead bite my tongue. DSD is the same, she has "vintage" clothes, one item being a suede jacket her aunt gave her from the 90's. It's bloody second hand! "Vintage" is just a snobby way of saying you wear second hand but your sooooo cool it's "vintage". Hmm

Can you tell it annoys the crap out of me? Grin

70's stuff might be 'vintage' if you are talking about a gorgeous leather coat. Paisley rayon shirts - not so much!

For me, vintage is a Dior ball gown. If we're talking about Next or old M&S stuff, then it's definitely second hand!

DD(15) has taken to buying vintage clothing. She recently bought a nice floral top with a "canda" designer label in it! I haven't dared ask how much she spent on it.

It's "vintage" and "retro" when your DCs buy it or find it stuffed in the back of your wardrobe. It's just a scummy old piece of clothing if you find it in the back of your wardrobe and wear it yourself.

As for jumble sales . . . haven't been to a decent one for over five years now. I think eBay has killed them off.

NarkedRaspberry · 17/08/2012 17:41

Exactly Scholes. If you weren't born when it was first worn, you're fine.

CanoeSlalom · 17/08/2012 17:55

Why don't you ask her "How old does something have to be before you would consider it vintage?"

MrsKeithRichards · 17/08/2012 18:04

Canda... C and A... I get it now.

I thought it said Canada for all those years.

RedBlanket · 17/08/2012 18:11

I'm still wearing clothes from the 90a and not in a 'vintage' way either

Grin at canda. When are you going to tell her?

ariadneoliver · 17/08/2012 18:17

Nothing looked good in the 70's? Really Beagle?

Are you sure

Grin Love that ariadne and sadly lived through it. I was a loonpants, afghan coat , cheesecloth shirt, and platforms sort of a gal. I looked so cooool Hmm
FunnyLittleFrog · 17/08/2012 18:22

I never realised that 'Canda' was C and A. I mean, I knew it was one of their own brands, like Clockhouse, but never made the mental leap from C&A to Canda.

Not that it matters...

Itsgottabebags · 17/08/2012 19:27

I think the difference is between charging £10 or £40.

Scholes34 · 17/08/2012 19:53

The thing the top looks like a great vintage top on her. On me, it would just look like an old C&A t-shirt that had faded in the wash.

She's too young to remember C&A, anyway, so the there's no news, as such to break to her!

Lara2 · 17/08/2012 20:07

Ah, jumble sales!! I got an amazing leather jacket for 50p!!! Definitely think eBay killed them off. As a teenager I dressed myself from jumble sales, Sue Ryder and junk shops - now all classed as vintage, only second hand then! My mum was horrified!! :)

BulldogDrummond · 17/08/2012 20:15

I still wear my black shell suit but jacket and trousers separately.

I still have two petticoats from 1958 not the paper nylon types though. Oh, and a bikini that I wore in 1960.

Scholes34 · 17/08/2012 20:31

Happy days in the 1980s - Saturday afternoon trawling the local jumble sales, then home for tea, cake and Brookside.

sarahtigh · 17/08/2012 20:42

I believe that strictly speaking an antique is 100 + years old ie pre WWI, and vintage at least 50 years old so anything from art deco to 1960's though I know think vintage means more than 25 years old so taking in 1970's and early 1980's a bit confusing

keely027 · 17/08/2012 21:05

Vintage is over fifty years old, anything before that is defined at retro

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 18/08/2012 15:16
