New carpet was fitted last Friday and I have just walked into the lounge to find a hole in it made by the dog. Previous carpet hadn't been down 2 years and dog had put five holes in it. I am livid.

AIBU to want to get rid of the dog?

YABU. Your dog is doing that for a reason, probably boredom at being home on their own. The dog doesn't know or care that the carpet is new and cost you money. Dogs make mess, this is common knowledge and something you should consider if you get one. If you don't want mess don't get a dog or ensure that it is well entertained when you are out.

Uhm, your dog put five holes within two years in the previous carpet? And you just went and put a new carpet down without thinking about why your dog was doing this or training it out of the habit?
That was a bit daft! (I would have gone for wooden floor and a dog trainer)

Inneedofbrandy · 16/08/2012 19:13

I couldn't have pets for these reasons plus hair. But YABU you are a grownup and you knew what having a dog would entail, create it.

Noqontrol · 16/08/2012 19:16

My dog used to do that. She did have issues though. She used to have phantom pregnancies and would scrabble holes in the carpet. Over the top nesting sort of thing. She did grow out of it eventually though.

GhostShip · 16/08/2012 19:16

YABU.

He does it for a reason. And if he'd done the same to the old carpet why did you think it would be different with the new one Confused

ThisIsNotHoneyDragon · 16/08/2012 19:21

I chose to have a puppy and I chose to have children. This is why I chose to have hard floors and a sofa held together with duct tape

oh dear, genuinely feel your pain. But yes yabu, poor little poocher roocher, be nice to him!

yellowraincoat · 16/08/2012 19:42

YABU

As others have said, you knew your dog exhibited this behaviour, why get a new carpet?

I find it hard to have any sympathy with anyone who talks about getting rid of a dog once they've realised that pets can be a stinking pain in the arse at times.

Kladdkaka · 16/08/2012 19:44

YABU

My dog ate the controls for the playstation and peed on my bed. I still luvs him.

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 16/08/2012 19:47

Well, I think given the last carpet, and the fact that nothing has been done about the behaviour that caused him to chew/scratch holes in it, YABU to be in any way upset or annoyed about him doing it again. You've failed to address the issue, and since your dog is your responsibility, it's only yourself to blame.

TidyDancer · 16/08/2012 19:49

If you're being at all serious, YABU to ever have a dog in the first place. You don't deserve one.

girliefriend · 16/08/2012 19:50

you need to get floorboards obv Grin yab a bit u

Northwentsouth · 16/08/2012 19:52

Yep, yabu. Sorry. Is doggy left alone a lot? Understand your frustration but get to the root of the cause first.

MsOnatopp · 16/08/2012 19:53

I don't think you are being seriously, but YABU.

Find out what's wrong with him/her.

Ormiriathomimus · 16/08/2012 20:00

WTF did you get a new carpet for Confused

Or did the dog sign a pre-carpet agreement that he has broken causing the outrage?

squeakytoy · 16/08/2012 20:01

of course yabu, you knew your dog put holes into carpets so why buy a new one...

WelshMaenad · 16/08/2012 20:03

YABU.

You should rehome the dog, though, maybe with someone who will be nice to him.

lovebunny · 16/08/2012 20:05

i'm not one of these 'animals can do no wrong' people - but if you knew the dog has a digging habit, why leave him alone on the new carpet? hope over common sense?
sorry about the carpet though. i do feel for you. i have rabbit-dug holes in mine, and its the most expensive single soft furnishing i've ever bought.

AdoraBell · 16/08/2012 20:08

Yes, YABU

How long is the dog left alone inside where it can get at the carpet? What made you think that a fresh new carpet would solve the problemConfused.

Whenever any of my dogs start scratching the carpets won't happen again as just this week put down new light colour to sell house I tell them to stop and they do. I know that's not possible if you are out all day but that may be a reason not to have a dog.

EdgarOlymPic · 16/08/2012 20:10

my dog isn't allowed in my bedroom as it is the one fitted-carpeted area (rest vinyl/ carpet tile) - she doesn't dig anyway, though has the occasional other accident.

i still haven't got that nice a carpet, due to the kids being allowed in.

YABU - it is within your power to have stopped this.

NotMostPeople · 16/08/2012 20:13

My dog pee'd on the kitchen floor, dd2 (10) didn't see it walked through it in bare feet slid into the pee and hurt her knee. She cried with the pain and was dripping in dog pee.

She still loves her.

Ilovesunflowers · 16/08/2012 20:15

My friend is a dog trainer and she used to be my flatmate with her own dog. It amazed me how much effort she put in to give him things to do and concentrate on e.g. frozen gongs, homemade toys etc.

This is the reason why I guess! YABU. It is a pet who is telling you something but doesn't have the words.
