New carpet was fitted last Friday and I have just walked into the lounge to find a hole in it made by the dog. Previous carpet hadn't been down 2 years and dog had put five holes in it. I am livid.

AIBU to want to get rid of the dog?

Have always had dogs. Smog dog not left alone for hours on end. I was home in another room when he did it.

New carpet replaced because house is going up for sale on Saturday.

Dog now confined to one room indefinitely.

BTW I love my dogs. They are part of the family and no I would not seriously get rid of him. But having just spent £500 to pretty the place up so I can sale, I am hopping mad.

Confining the dog to one room is NOT going to help the situation. He will get extremely stir crazy and is likely to chew anything in sight. It is your fault, not his.

Your experience with dogs should tell you this dog needs help...or at least entertaining and engaging with toys.

I think the dog should be rehoming you not the other way round Grin

rug over hole in carpet

numbertaker · 16/08/2012 21:01

YANBU I feel the same, should have listened to everyone who said 'don't get a dog'.

If you've always had dogs then you'll surely know that a dog isnt going to look at your brand new £500 carpet (bargain! Envy) and think oh that's new I best leave it alone.

Chew toys, chew toys, chew toys. and if anything like my dog, a shaun the sheep footstool to hump

WigGold · 16/08/2012 21:08

YABU to get a new carpet before sorting out the dog's behaviour - not the dogs fault.

WigGold · 16/08/2012 21:10

Oh, and citronella spray works for excluding a dog from a particular room.

mumof4sons · 16/08/2012 21:18

Aren't you all a judgey lot!

Was looking for a bit of sympathy, but got nothing but attack.

OP posts:
RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 16/08/2012 21:24

Nope, never attacked you here, you asked if you were being unreasonable, and I said yes and why I thought so. Sometimes the truth is a bitter pill to swallow though, would you like a glass of faux sympathy from a bunch of strangers online to go with it?

Sorry if you wanted sympathy...I think the dog deserves it more than you do.

Look on the 'attack' as constuctive criticism and get real.

BehindLockNumberNine · 16/08/2012 21:33

No one has attacket you, merely questioned the wisdom of replacing the carpet when you have a dog known to chew up carpets...

We have had our rescue dog one year this month. He chewed 12 wooden cupboard handles, two playstation remotes, one calculator, four pairs of shoes, one handbag, two books, one riding crop, one leather belt, two bedside tables, two wicker baskets, one electric shaver, one mobile phone, countless pens, a 24 pack of toilet tissue and the skirting board in the hallway in the first three months of being with us. And that is just the stuff I can remember off hand...
He suffered from sep anx. We addressed this. He still chews ocassionally but we are confident it is being resolved.

Did I want to get rid of him? Secretly the thought flitted through my mind. Did I go online and voice that? Nope, never, because I was not serious and never ever would get rid of him.

Perhaps you are being - in your mind harshly- responded to in the manner you are because none of us know that you are joking?

I still maintain that getting a new carpet with a known-carpet-chewing dog was a little daft.
And as for leaving the dog in one room - I hope you value nothing in that room because I think it will be chewed.

And it won't solve the problem, mainly contain it to one room.

Some dog training may be needed...

whathasthecatdonenow · 16/08/2012 21:44

First time I left my rescue dog alone he chewed all of the door frames downstairs. He'd been left for 15 minutes. He had separation anxiety.

First bonfire night with him he ripped up two carpets - he's frightened of loud bangs.

I didn't think about taking him back, I got a book, spoke to the vet and just loved him enough to make him secure.

He was seven months old when I got him. He's now 13 and snoring on the couch.

I couldn't even contemplate re-homing him when I'd had him for less than a week, so I don't understand how you could after years of loving him.

Kladdkaka · 16/08/2012 22:12

My dog also tried to re-enact the great escape by chewing a tunnel through the kitchen wall into the living room. And one year he got to the Easter eggs first and scoffed the lot. Foil and cardboard included.

Why does your dog have a carpet digging habit, mumof4sons? Have you sought advice on this?

lljkk · 17/08/2012 17:53

offs, OP is obviously just sounding off.
This is why we are keeping frayed carpet FOREVER. Not due to a dog, but to my children. And DH. And me. We'll all ruin a new carpet in too short order.

WelshMaenad · 17/08/2012 17:57

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

alistron1 · 17/08/2012 18:16

We have wooden floors and pet gates to keep animals out of the living room/upstairs. Not fool proof but it does reduce damage and make it easier to keep clean/tidy.

Pinkflipflop · 17/08/2012 18:25

Have a Biscuit

There, that's better.

Chandon · 17/08/2012 18:29

you have my sympathy!!

But as you know, in this country dog's feelings are more important than people's feelingsWink
