usually told to us by Nicholas Witchall, in a somber voice

I mean FGS the mans in his 90's, are we to hear every last thing wrong with him till he snuffs it?

I bet he hates it all too, theres no dignity for him either

agree also.

Now would seem an appropriate time to raise the awareness of elderly urinary tract problems. It tends to be a bit taboo and embarrassing for the older generation.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2012 10:13

It can cause or aggravate confusion

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 16/08/2012 10:30

I suppose I can see how his hospitalisation is newsworthy (he is a public figure and has been for a long time). But I can't believe it was first item on the news. How is the horrific situation in Syria, or the latest news on the economy, outranked by "Extremely old man is ill, again"?

It's because they think he's dying, I suspect, but can't openly say so. This is a man who notoriously hates hospitals and "fuss" and is now in and out of them. He missed the majority of the Jubilee events despite being from a generation who would crawl there on hands and knees if they could - remember the Queen Mother going to Princess Margaret's funeral by helicopter, a couple of weeks before her own death? And he's in his 90s. If he isn't fighting off infection, over months now, then that isn't good. The media are IMO gearing up for the end.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 16/08/2012 10:40

"Penis related" Hmm. How childish.

It's no more penis related than a UTI is "vulva-related" in a woman. Very common in old men, and as others have said, potentially very serious.

Phil is obviously on his way out, and as someone else has said, I shouldn't think it would be too long before the Queen follows him. Personally I can't imagine a world without her.

vezzie · 16/08/2012 10:41

It's clearly a cover story for the clap.

"Let's say it's tonsillitis"
"No, everyone knows he had them out in 1943, plus, there are grainy pap photos of him dropping his kecks for the dr"
"ok. Do you think they'd go for "bladder infection"? too lame?"
"let's give it a go"

IShallWearMidnight · 16/08/2012 11:00

Perfectstorm, I misread your post (was skimming through) and thought you said the Queen Mother went to Princess Margaret's funeral two weeks AFTER her own death, which I thought was pretty dedicated Smile.

perfectstorm · 16/08/2012 11:03

Zombie Queen Mother. Now there's a terrifying mental image.

SoleSource · 16/08/2012 11:03

Buck Palace will be up for sale to cover the care home fees then...

diddl · 16/08/2012 11:06

My Dad was so ill it was as if he had had a stroke.

He was incoherent & had lost the use of his legs.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 16/08/2012 11:08

I've had bladder related problems. I appear to have mislaid my penis.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 16/08/2012 11:09

I agree about raising awareness of the severe effects of UTI in elderly people

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 16/08/2012 11:11

I feel I have to defend my penis remark - I think that's how older men would see it when symptoms first start, and why they wouldn't necessarily want other people to know.

I'm not saying it's scientifically accurate.

LadyBeagleEyes · 16/08/2012 11:16

He's an elderly man.
He's got to over 90, I think I said on another thread, my Mum had a bladder infection just before she died.
I feel sorry for the Queen and extended family just as I would for anybody, but I'll not grieve for him when he goes.

cocolepew · 16/08/2012 11:19

Does anyone really care apart from his family and friends?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/08/2012 11:20

I'm all for dignity, but honestly, why on earth do you think Prince Philip would care about people knowing he had a bladder infection? Have you seen what he sniggers about?

I can't imagine he cares in the slightest if people think it's 'penis related'.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 16/08/2012 11:21

Probaly true Grin

I gues you always think of your own elderly relatives and what they would have wanted, don't you?

Sallyingforth · 16/08/2012 11:25

Is this how he caught the infection?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/08/2012 11:30

Yeah, I know what you mean Te - I do. But I hope he's not too fussed.

I'm not keen on the monarchy but they're also just an elderly couple and I can feel for that.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 16/08/2012 11:30

That's nice, Sallyingforth. Really mature Hmm

Attitudes like yours merely promote stigma and embarrassment about urinary diseases.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2012 11:33

I'd like to think he's emphasising that it isn't anything to be coy about and that elderly men should visit their doctors.
Except I imagine he's in pain and scared :( and that sort of thing is far from his mind, but through the role he has that will happen anyway.

laudinum · 16/08/2012 11:34

How many elderly are hearing the news and thinking "Poor sod, I know how that feels" but are also feeling embarrassed or too confused (through bladder infection) to speak about it?

Of course it is penis or urethra related. Hell, let's throw in a kidney or two.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2012 11:36

I do hope this will help elderly men. I think elderly women tend to be happy to visit the doctor :)

Viviennemary · 16/08/2012 11:36

YANNNNBU. I couldn't believe it was the top headline on the news yesterday. I mean who cares. Who cares. Who cares about them. They have the top doctors. No lying about on trolleys for them. And yet we are supposed to worry about this. Too much information. I suppopse I could just about tolerate a sentence at the end of the news to satisfy the royal fans.
