to not leave a tip in zizzi's?

workshy · 13/08/2012 23:04

I normally leave tips in restaurants, always cash, never add it onto the card payment

impromptu visit to Zizzi's in Leeds tonight, they were lovely, knew we had a time costraint as we were going to a show so the service was speedy, the waiter asked if I would like him to bring DD2s icecream out while I was still eating, and then bought DD1 a free ice cream which they insisted I didn't need to pay for

excellent service, I was all ready to tip

bill comes and it's £31
I have £40 in cash and that's it, so I give the £40, thinking I would leave a tip out of the change

he takes the tray away, brings it back and brings me £10 in change!!!

I tell him it's wrong, and he says 'no no, manager says it's fine, enjoy the rest of your evening'
I tell him I want to leave a tip but have no change, and if he gives me the right change, I can leave him a tip -but he insists that £30 for the meal is fine

and now I feel really guilty that I didn't leave a tip, especially as they are so nice

should I have insisted?

Well at least he knew why you didn't leave a tip.

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 23:07

I suppose you could have asked them to change the £10 note up for you

But to be honest, it sounds as though they were low on change themselves so I wouldn't worry about it.

An email to the Manager singing the staff's praises might be a good idea though?

Yddraigdragon · 13/08/2012 23:08

Write a note to their head office telling them how wonderful the staff were in Leeds...
And that you were so impressed you told everyone on here.

Or, go back at a later date and double tip?

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 23:09

Actually, an email to the Head Office would probably go a long way.

We often send emails of complaint when the service is shit, so why not when it's brilliant.

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 23:09

Great minds Ydd

dwpanxt · 13/08/2012 23:11

I agree - I always complain , but also ,I always compliment when necessary.

workshy · 13/08/2012 23:11

I will do but I still feel bad :(

don't want him to think I'm a tight fisted cow!

It really does sound to me as though they'd run out of change in the till...hence them rounding the bill up.

He will have known this and also, you told him if he charges the right amount you'll have change for the tip.

workshy · 13/08/2012 23:28

I did think they must have run out of change, it was about 7pm and pretty quiet

I'm quite obsessive about tipping though as I used to be a waitress when I was a student and it really is a rubbish job

If I am ever in Leeds I will go to Zizzi's. Word of mouth and all that .

Had very good experience in Edinburgh Zizzi's - very nice food and exceptional service.

If you are on Twitter you could tweet about it. I also think thank you email would be a nice thing to do.

queenofthepirates · 13/08/2012 23:42

They have an FB page so I stuck your post on there with a little message telling them to check out their great feedback.

glenthebattleostrich · 14/08/2012 08:04

Love Leeds Zizzi's, the staff are so lovely.

When DD was about 4 months old i met a friend there just after lunchtime. The lady who served us was fantastic. DD was being grumpy (Mammy was daring to try an adult conversation and eat food whilst still hot, how very dare i) and she would not settle in her pram. The lovely, wonderful waitress pushed DD back and forth singing to her so I could have my first hot meal in ages, She also tried to refuse a tip.

The staff have been consistantly lovely whenever I've been there. Definitely something on their facebook page and a little note to Head Office / Restaurant Manager.

Yankeecandlequeen · 14/08/2012 08:07

I don't understand this tipping lark. You paid for the meal, the waiter gets his/her wages so why bother?

danteV · 14/08/2012 08:10

Yankee you have clearly never done this job.
Where is it in Leeds? I fancy going now. :)

Pixieonthemoor · 14/08/2012 08:57

I think an email to the manager and copied to head office would be really lovely. When ever I compliment good service, I find that the manager is a) gobsmacked that anyone has bothered and b) thrilled to pieces. Dont worry too much - at least you tried to tip and the waiter knew that you had really made the effort to do so.

Our local Zizzi is also v nice Wink

TitsalinaBumSquash · 14/08/2012 09:03

I can't fault our local Zizis at all, the staff are excellent and friendly. I would fb/tweet a message and email if you can. Smile

quirrelquarrel · 14/08/2012 09:45

What a ridiculous name, do they know what it means! My mum and I always snigger a bit when we walk past it in town.

workshy · 14/08/2012 10:55

danteV

it's upstairs in the Light, just off the Headrow :)

angryfurball · 14/08/2012 10:59

what does it mean then quirrelquarrel?

fairyfriend · 14/08/2012 12:10

Can I ask why your DD1 wasn't getting an ice cream in the first place?
Small details bother me, sorry! Grin

Kladdkaka · 14/08/2012 12:27

angryfurball Zizzi is a Scicilian word that means 'elegant' or 'stylish'. I think quirrelquarrel is confusing it with the French word 'zizi' which means 'willy'.

quirrelquarrel · 14/08/2012 12:56

We spell it any way :-) mum's French, btw. But yar. Obviously have v. juvenile sense of humour.

danteV · 14/08/2012 14:38

Thanks workshy, I am going to take the kids. :)

Yankeecandlequeen · 14/08/2012 14:40

Dante - yes I have so quit the sarcasm.

olibeansmummy · 14/08/2012 17:43

I want to go now too! It's so much nicer when waiters/ waitresses are friendly with the children :)
