our house is a semi and the people in the house attached to ours are the most obnoxious people I have ever met! They have three kids (a son roughly the same age as me, a daughter who's about 18 and a daughter who is 9) the youngest is polite and well mannered, but the other two are loud and rude like their parents.
The mother stands in the garden shouting and swearing at her husband at all hours of the day, which currently is not a huge issue, but when dd starts talking I don't want her to be hearing that kind of language!
They scream and shout at the dog constantly.
They never mow their garden or tidy the rubbish in their garden which has led to rats living in their garage (which are at the bottom of the gardens in our road) so environmental health have had to be called. When MIL tried to speak to them about the issue they told her "it's not our fucking problem".
The oldest two swear and shout at each other, and at the youngest.
They have people coming and going from the house all hours of the day, slamming car doors and doors in the house, the TV upstairs is constantly blaring at all hours of the day and night, both of which disturbs dd who is not a great sleeper anyway.
Their is always covered in rubbish which blows all over our drive.
The final straw came last night, when at 2:15am they decided to launch into some very off key and screechy very loud karaoke Angry
Sleep deprived as I am, aibu to think this is now taking the piss??

Call the popo maam.

Seriously some of what you describe is snobbish- the state of their home
For example. Some of it is anti social behaviour. If it offends you and talking doesnt work call the authorites.

BBwolefs · 13/08/2012 22:27

To quantify the statement re snobbery rats are not ok obviously but the other factors in how they keep their home is up to Them.

savoycabbage · 13/08/2012 22:28

Yabu because it can only make it worse. They are not going to morph into Bree Van De Camp and bake you a basket of mini muffins.

You will have to move, it's the only easy believe me.

PooPooOnMars · 13/08/2012 22:29

Urgh what a nightmare.

amieis · 13/08/2012 22:29

I know occasionally we all let the grass get a bit long but theirs just takes the piss! Their rottweiler goes out in the garden and you cant see him in the grass!

OP posts:
BBwolefs · 13/08/2012 22:30

Authorities even. Its been a long life day

MrGeresHamster · 13/08/2012 22:30

Hmm at BBWolefs

Sounds like nightmare neighbours, speak to your local PCSO about what they would advise. Calling the police out straight away may inflame the situation. Have you spoken to environmental health about the rats?

PooPooOnMars · 13/08/2012 22:31

Long grass isn't that bad . . . long grass, rubbish, rats, stinking dog shit . . . that's bad!

BBwolefs · 13/08/2012 22:32

Not intending to diminish what OP has said see comment about long day!! just simply stating that some Of the issue could be the way people live, that cant be changed, without the help of the authorities

maddening · 13/08/2012 22:35

you can go via environmental health at your council re noise - and I think the littering too. But be aware it is a hard path the tread as you will be keeping diaries, having officers come and listen and /or recording equipment and they will be informed of the complaint and, although not told who made it, it will be obvious that it is you so be ready for an atmosphere.

if you are renting and can afford to move that is the easiest option - if you own then you will have to declare any complaints whether you go via eh or not and the littering noise may be very visable/audible to prospective vendors.

maddening · 13/08/2012 22:36

ps yanbu - nuisance neighbours are a pain in the tits

neuroticmumof3 · 13/08/2012 22:40

yanbu, they sound awful to live next to.

sancerreity · 13/08/2012 22:47

well we might not live like that but in fairness they are entitled to
1 Have the TV on all day and night
2 Have long grass
3 close their car and house doors night and day(it probably sounds like slamming because everything's quieter at night)
4 swear at each other

re the rats at the bottom of the garden.Sounds as if it's been dealt with.Although I live in the countryside and lets just say you wouldn't like it here.Theres a river and hayfield at the bottom of the garden and I see rats as big as rabbits coming in sometimes!

The 2 am karaoke is obviously not ok ! But if it's a one off i don't see what you can do

FeakAndWeeble · 13/08/2012 22:49

I can't see how any of your complaints are snobbish or unreasonable, they sound bloody horrible.

There's some good advice to be had on this forum. Everyone there either has or has had antisocial neighbours and are well versed in what you can do about them. Perhaps they can help.

I would consider contacting your local environmental health, their landlord, if they rent, and your local police too if you are feeling intimidated.

Other than that, I second those who are advising you to move. It may seem like giving up but life is just too short. Please be aware though that if you make a formal complaint about your neighbours and then sell you will need to acknowledge that you've had cause to complain and this can have a knock-on effect on your asking price.

maddening · 13/08/2012 22:57

yes - they can have the tv on whenever they like sancerreity but not to an extent where they are disturbing the neighbours. And the same goes for swearing and slamming doors

Dominodonkey · 13/08/2012 23:03

Nothing the OP has said sounds snobbish to me. She is talking about rubbish that blows into her garden and loud noise which directly affects her. It's not like she's complaining that they have grimy curtains!

HansieMom · 13/08/2012 23:12

The little girl must think she got switched at birth.

amieis · 14/08/2012 20:52

My oh owns the house and has not long bought it... Maybe 9 months ago? We are not in a position to move. Their landlord has been informed but does nothing, about any of the issues.
sancerreity the rats are not small here either... I actually mistook one for a cat until fil corrected me Confused it wouldn't bother me if they were considerate of the volume at which they do stuff either.... At any given time of the day/night I could tell you exactly what they're watching on TV!

OP posts:
amieis · 14/08/2012 20:56

could I point out I'm not actually going to tell them to fuck off. I was angry and am VERY sleep deprived arent we all

OP posts:
parakeet · 14/08/2012 22:11

Great, so they rent. The landlord can presumably give them two months' notice to leave. Your only solution is to bug the hell out of the landlord with all these problems, going through all the official channels, until he decides it is easier for him to find new tenants than to put up with your complaints any longer.

elizaregina · 15/08/2012 11:57

agree

bug hell out of ll, you have a right to a peaceful family life as they do too a noisy one so a compromsie must be reached...and they must tone down behaviour.

if you have his number ring HIM every single time YOU are disturbed...if you dont have it try and get it.

do they even have a tennacy agrement i wonder....our prob neeighbours didnt have any agrement at all and couldnt speak english - nor the landlord!!!

they sound like a nightmare and im sorry if i sound snobby but the picture op describes is one of people who dont care.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 15/08/2012 23:49

NO, ITS SIMPLY THE PROB OF NOT BEING RICH ENOUGH TO OWN A COUNTRY PILE !

PooPooOnMars · 16/08/2012 08:57

I agree with repeated complaints to the landlord.

PooPooOnMars · 16/08/2012 08:57

May. What are you on about?
