our house is a semi and the people in the house attached to ours are the most obnoxious people I have ever met! They have three kids (a son roughly the same age as me, a daughter who's about 18 and a daughter who is 9) the youngest is polite and well mannered, but the other two are loud and rude like their parents.
The mother stands in the garden shouting and swearing at her husband at all hours of the day, which currently is not a huge issue, but when dd starts talking I don't want her to be hearing that kind of language!
They scream and shout at the dog constantly.
They never mow their garden or tidy the rubbish in their garden which has led to rats living in their garage (which are at the bottom of the gardens in our road) so environmental health have had to be called. When MIL tried to speak to them about the issue they told her "it's not our fucking problem".
The oldest two swear and shout at each other, and at the youngest.
They have people coming and going from the house all hours of the day, slamming car doors and doors in the house, the TV upstairs is constantly blaring at all hours of the day and night, both of which disturbs dd who is not a great sleeper anyway.
Their is always covered in rubbish which blows all over our drive.
The final straw came last night, when at 2:15am they decided to launch into some very off key and screechy very loud karaoke Angry
Sleep deprived as I am, aibu to think this is now taking the piss??

You need to get the rat problem sorted out, if you can. At our old house, the garden was overrun one summer by rats. I counted 15 on one occasion. Made me want to vomit. I couldn't let DD go out in the garden (she was under 2 at the time). We lived on the edge of farmland, and there wasn't a thing we could do to stop them coming into the garden; all we could do was get the Council's pest control to put traps in to catch as many as possible. The flower beds were collapsing because of the number of rat runs criss-crossing our garden and those of our neighbours. We were all aware of them, and didn't put any bird feeders out as that attracted more rats.

We haven't got rats in the garden where we live now, but there are mice. Just one of those things about living in the country.

amieis, yanbu it sounds like nightmare.

However yabu in stating that "The mother stands in the garden shouting and swearing at her husband at all hours of the day, which currently is not a huge issue"

If it were the other way round how big an issue would it be? Would you feel sorry for her, saying she was a victim of domestic abuse? Would you be asking on here for advice to help her?

I'm not getting at you personally, just a chance to promote the fact that women are perpetrators of dv too.

I feel for you I really do..I have similar problems .Sad

We own our house, moved here 10 years ago,but the house next door is council owned. Our neighbours (who didn't really give us any problems at all) moved to a smaller council property, and we now have a family who have no consideration for anyone else at all. Their kids are screaming, they play football as if at Wembley so their footballs are over our fence several times a day. The youngest child throws anything he can lay his hands on over the fence. The parents have yelling matches, and seem to have a household full of visitors who drink, swear and also bring obnoxious kids with them. Worst is the smell of weed being smoked..it is a disgusting smell and you can smell it throughout our house...visitors to us have remarked on it!!!
They are not the sort of people i'd like to confront about it. My friend who lives the other side of them complains about it too,so it is not just me!
Very sad, because we can't afford to move either. Council just told us to keep writing stuff down, but that doesn't really get us anywhere in the meantime.

So they rent their house and keep their garden in a mess, generally being messy, mucky people.

Has their landlord thought about the inside of their his house? If they are making a mess of it inside, their deposit paid at the beginning of their tenancy will not cover the repair and refurbishment. He should have a look inside and get rid of them before the house falls down around their ears.

However, it is possible that the landlord is a relative. isn't it?

Duchess. Eek!

Blondie. Good point. I would imagine the op just meant not a big deal on the effect it has on her own life as much as the rats etc.
