To think that £14 for a school jumper for a 4 year old is just disgusting?

AFAIK we have to buy the school logo ones although I will be checking for sure.

But £14 seems to be the going rate for a logo school jumper I can get one from Next for £8 or £4 from a supermarket but am paying double just for the school logo to be sewn on. They don't even seem to be that well made the shape is horrendous. Be bloody great when he loses it.

Legally, they cannot force a uniform, let alone a logo, at primary school. You know that right?

Trioofprinces · 13/08/2012 20:52

If it is a state primary thy cannot insist on you wearing the exact uniform. In fact they can't insist on a uniform at all.

Can you ask someone you know with older kids what everyone else does? Your child will only need one or two jumpers.

Ilovedaintynuts · 13/08/2012 20:53

Ours are £24! Disgraceful. Not sure what to do yet.

ShowOfHands · 13/08/2012 20:55

"Your child will only need one or two jumpers"

Mwahahahahahaha.

DD spent reception covered in lunch/glue/paint/mud/felt tip. She'd come home plastered every day.

anditwasallyellow · 13/08/2012 21:01

I did not know that blackberry, but will bear that in mind. It is a state school but a church school, don't know if that can make a difference to the uniform policy?

We just buy 1 or 2 logo'd and buy a couple of other cheap non-logo'd in case the school ones get messed up.

simpson · 13/08/2012 21:04

Most schools sell 2nd hand jumpers too.

My DC school sell them for 50p.

Also DD is due to start reception in sept and does have a couple of plain jumpers with no logo on.

crikeybill · 13/08/2012 21:04

Our Catholic primary school jumpers ( compulsary ) are £25 each !! Dd2 lost 3 last year !
I fished one out of the lost property box after the last loss and wrote her name in it !!!

ThreadWatcher · 13/08/2012 21:06

You could try getting one for non PE days and school photo day etc. And a bunch of same colour cheap ones from elsewhere.

£14 is a rip off
£24 is a completely stupid over priced rip off - I would refuse to pay that. Is that a state school Ilovedaisynuts?

anditwasallyellow · 13/08/2012 21:10

Even one or two logo jumpers at £14 each is a lot though.

So far I've bought 2x trousers at £7 each, 2x polo shirts £7 for two, 1x book bag £5 2x jumpers £14 each, got to get a tie, PE kit, school shoes. It's going to come to over £100 and some of it is bound to get wrecked/lost.

I think if they're going to force a uniform it should at least be affordable. I normally get ds whole wardrobe for around £100.

First year was expensive but I cut off the logo and see them to cheaper jumpers now

ilovesprouts · 13/08/2012 21:18

my ds2 jumpers are £9.50p hes 5, polo shirts are £7.50p.

avivabeaver · 13/08/2012 21:19

agree, they cant enforce this.

dd3 starts lower school in september. the head stood up at the new parents evening and said "please ensure that your child has a green and white striped dress, not gingham." as the dresses can only be bought from the school at £11 each, rather than 2 for £7 from tesco, I know exactly what I will be buying.

RackandRuin · 13/08/2012 21:22

I've only ever bought one official school jumper. Bloody waste of money as dd prefers the thinner supermarket ones. Now I get by on handed down ones from friends and school and cheap plain ones.

The school does occasionally remind me of their policy for the school logo ones, but I smile sweetly and ignore them.

WildWorld2004 · 13/08/2012 21:26

The only thing iv bought this year is new shoes. Score Grin

I agree school uniforms are expensive. I usually buy just the school jumper which cost about £8. The rest comes from supermarkets.

anditwasallyellow · 13/08/2012 21:27

The uniform is grey trousers, v neck jumper, shirt and a ridiculous tie on a bit of elastic.

I've already gone with a polo shirt instead of a proper shirt because ds will struggle to do all the buttons up quickly after PE. Do people think that I can go with a round neck and no tie if exact uniform is not enforcable? I dont' want to be deliberately difficult but I could get a good quality round neck for £6 from next in the school colour. I think that the tie will just be faffy and potentially a choking hazard, I mean when else eould we encourage 4 year olds to put elastic round their necks?

Being a tight arse I bought 6 school dresses from the carboot for £1.20!

dolallylass · 13/08/2012 21:29

Can a group of you get the logo and do a deal with a local embroidery company? My friends did this and halved the cost Smile

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 21:31

Don't buy the logo'd ones.I never did.

Aboutlastnight · 13/08/2012 21:34

I just don't bother with the logo stuff. Ridiculous for primary school. They have a uniform for bloody PE at our school Hmm I don't bother with that at all. Dds get a t shirt, shorts and trainers in whatever bloody colour is clean.

aftereight · 13/08/2012 21:37

£16 here for a school logo sweatshirt or cardigan. And £9 I think for logo polo shirt. Both in a completely hideous shade which definitely isn't available on the high street. I feel your pain.
The problem with non compliance is putting your child at risk of standing out from the crowd.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 21:38

And most of MN think that school uniform is a good thing?

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 21:39

Loads of parents never bothered with the rip off logo stuff when my DS was in primary school, so he never stood out from the crowd.

Dolallytats · 13/08/2012 21:43

Blimey, that's steep!! The logo sweatshirts for my 4yo DS are £6.50, much more manageable.

I can't believe how much some of you have to payShock

LeeCoakley · 13/08/2012 21:45

Supermarket buy everything except the logo top. Tesco do polo shirts for £1 each (£2 for 2) and trousers for £2.50 (£5.00) for two. Don't know about quality though. Don't know how much M&S stuff is now but they used to try and get near the prices of the supermarkets and was long lasting. Like the cutting out of the logo - never thought of that!
