To "think" that "quotation marks" are being "overused" lately?

That and "said".
Eg, "so I refused to give said child it's fruit shoot back"
"I decided to bring pombears to said party"

And yes, I realise it doesn't matter, but it "irks" me. Grin

One thing I love and I stole it from an American board (nobody says it here) is yall. Yall ready for this? how are yall coping with that? I just like saying it and typing it, and by the time I'm finished, everybody will be saying yall agree with me right?

KatieTaylor · 11/08/2012 12:07

oops, that should be y'all. Pronounced like youghal where the carpets are made.

MarathonMama · 11/08/2012 12:11

Yanbu - my MIL always puts quotation marks around my DD2's name Hmm

usualsuspect · 11/08/2012 12:12

'YABU'

HecateHarshPants · 11/08/2012 12:15

Marathon - please please please ask her why.

I will give you loads and loads of chocolate if you ask her and report back Grin

FrankelSaysRelax · 11/08/2012 12:15

Every time I see the quotation marks around an individual word I think of the poster doing what I like to call, Big Finger Quotes as they speak. Like this

Grin

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 11/08/2012 12:20

I overuse parentheses a lot (like this) (she said parenthetically).

What really bugs me is people putting question marks at the end of sentences which are in no way shape or form questions. E.g. "I think you're being a bit weird?" "My monkey has lost its banana?" "I overuse random punctuation marks a lot?"

flyoverthehill · 11/08/2012 12:21

I'm with LST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way too many !!! I just can't help it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 11/08/2012 12:21

Frankel - I do that too. In fact, that's the exact image that comes into my mind. Whenever someone does it, I find it hard to stop myself from saying "A big 'laser'" with the over-exaggerated finger quote action.

flyoverthehill · 11/08/2012 12:22

saycool I think I just found your monkeys banana

PuppyMonkey · 11/08/2012 12:27

Isn't there a book or a site or maybe it was just a MN thread with examples of "completely" unnecessary quotation marks on signs and in newspapers etc?

Come to our "school fête"

Buy one, get one "free"

"potatoes" 1.50 per bag

"etc"

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 11/08/2012 12:33

Cheers flyover.

MissTapestry · 11/08/2012 12:36

That sounds a bit rude...

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 11/08/2012 12:38

You'll have to ask the monkey.

kittyandthefontanelles · 11/08/2012 12:38

Oops shame-a-tron. Confused myself after being up all night with babbins. Had a good hard think about it too. Must have tied myself up in knots.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 11/08/2012 13:16

Yeah, yeah, blame it on the "babbins" and the "sleepless nights"..... Grin

NagooingForGold · 11/08/2012 13:24

Grin it's me. I've been '"-ing' a lot. It's because I am tired and CBA top search for the right words Blush

I don't do it in RL though. The hands are not involved.

kittyandthefontanelles · 11/08/2012 13:33

Grin always!

Viviennemary · 11/08/2012 13:38

I use exclamation marks far too much!! Grin

somedayma · 11/08/2012 14:05

It's really annoying and always used in a totally random fashion. Eg on the Tia sharp thread someone talking about her granny's bf said something like:

I find it odd that "he" dated both the granny and mother.

WHY IS HE IN QUOTATION MARKS?! it's as if the poster was doubting he is male. But I don't think that was the intention? Weeeeeird

MarathonMama · 11/08/2012 14:23

Hecate - I've asked, it's because DD is called Connie and she thinks that must be short for Constance so puts Connie in quotation marks (even though her name is just Connie and MIL knows that). The woman's bonkers.

HecateHarshPants · 11/08/2012 14:26

it's time to send her a copy of the birth certificate.

Or start putting her name in quotation marks too.

MissTapestry · 11/08/2012 14:30

Said "monkey" is refusing to talk. (think "he" enjoyed it. Grin

Someday, that's EXACTLY what I mean.
