to solve a little chap's ice cream woes?

Have been to the park with the small Maenads, and was dragged on the tips of my toes totook them to the ice cream van when it appeared. After nabbing our bounty (bubble gum knickerbocker, thank you kindly) there was a devastated little chap crying because he'd dropped some of his money and didn't have enough for his ice cream, all his pals had one. No adults around (it's in the centre of an estate where kids actually play outside) and ice cream man was making moves to go, so I gave him a quid for his ice cream. Tears all gone.

If you were his parent would you love me or loathe me? Curious.

Of course you would. Makes me Sad to think that anyone wouldn't?!

CommaChameleon · 09/08/2012 17:37

We'll, they had given him some money to get something, so they can't have minded him having one.

I'd have thought you were lovely and tried to pass on the kindness myself to someone else one day.

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 17:38

I would have done the same as you, and as a parent I would be glad there was a kind person around . .

hiddenhome · 09/08/2012 17:38

I think that's a very nice thing to do Smile

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 09/08/2012 17:39

Aww no, of course not. If it's the kind of estate where people know each other I'd pay you back though.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 09/08/2012 17:40

Aw I would be very happy if you'd done this for my children!

poorbuthappy · 09/08/2012 17:41

Lovely thing to do.
The other week the ice cream van stopped outside my house when all the kids were playing in our front garden.
A few kids who lived down the road ran as fast as their legs could carry them to get money from their parents.
2 kids who live the other side of the village were subsidised.
1 kid who lives opposite ran home, came running back out shouting,
"yes, my mum says you can buy me an ice cream!"

Hmm
NettOlympicSuperstar · 09/08/2012 17:41

Love you, and I'd have done the same.
Kids and ice cream gets me every time, I feel so sorry for them when they drop it, or can't have one and their friends do.
Kids should always have ice cream.

fruitysummer · 09/08/2012 17:41

I'd love you even though i'm not a parent.

It's not a massive amount and it makes the world a nicer place. It's the same as giving someone the extra for bus fares when the driver is being a bit of an arse isn't it?

HerRoyalNotness · 09/08/2012 17:42

love you, and i'd do the same myself. can't bear to see little kiddies crying over something that I can solve easily for them.

TastesLikePanda · 09/08/2012 17:43

I'd love you if you gave me a pound for an ice cream ;)

NCForNow · 09/08/2012 17:47

Yanbu and thank goodness you did!

WelshMaenad · 09/08/2012 17:50

It's not actually my estate, we'd driven there to spy on the new play equipment in their park because we're trying to scare up funds to regenerate ours because it's a death trap

I was prepping for a flaming about filling other people's kids with junk. I think the ice cream man gave him extra E-no flavoured sauce Smile

That was a lovely thing to do. Lovely. I hope some kind-hearted person would do the same for my DCs.

If he had had the money but dropped it Joyful then that implies that his parents knew he would be getting an ice surely?

bogeyface · 09/08/2012 18:50

and ice cream! i have not just fallen from the pages of Five go Caravanning :o

It was a lovely thing to do but - and I'll get laughed at/flamed - I would have worried that someone would "accuse" me of trying to entice a child or something Blush

WelshMaenad · 09/08/2012 19:03

Lol Salmo! He was a bit sticky and snotty and I have enough of that with my two. One look at them would very quickly convince anyone in Authoriteh that I really wouldn't want a third.

Assuming the boy wasn't lying (and why would he be?) about being given the money for an ice cream in the first place, you weren't filling him with junk against his parents' wishes, so why would anyone think that unreasonable?

I suppose a parent might be annoyed that their DC got away with being careless with no consequences at someone else's (your) expense. But that would be a pretty harsh philosophy in the circumstances and would make me want to give the boy ice cream just to make up for it.

BelinaTheChicken · 09/08/2012 19:13

I'd have been very pleased if you'd done it for my DC, and would have paid you back had I known. I can still remember that I'd been allowed to get a feast when I was about 6, which was a massive treat as we normally got mini milks or something small, and I dropped it in the sand Sad. My mum didn't have any more money, but my lovely cousins and sister shared theirs with me, but that feeling of watching ice cream hitting has scarred me for life!

I think you are a very lovely Welsh maenad. Smile I'd have done it too, or been tempted and then kicked myself for not doing it, all the way home. If he was all set to buy one, I can't imagine his parents would 'hate' you for helping him get something he would have bought anyway. What a lovely thing to do!
