To take a 2 yr old and 5 yr old to the hairdressers with me?

desperately in need of a cut and colour, hairdressers has been shut for a week and discovered today my stylist not doing Saturdays any more, so tomorrow's the only slot they have. Have one child outsourced but nowhere for the others to go - it is a child friendly salon with dvd's though.

Aibu to take them?

I wouldn't! Do you think they would sit for that long?

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 07/08/2012 21:16

Cut yes, I have done when I had to.

But cut and colour - no way, I get bored rigid myself.

PatsysPyjamas · 07/08/2012 21:17

It wouldn't be my idea of fun. Can you time it to coincide with 2 yr old's nap? The 5 yr old will probably be ok.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/08/2012 21:18

I have taken my 5yr old while I had a haircut, he just sat and read a book, but wouldn't have been keen on a 2yr old, especially if it's for something more complex than just a trim...

Viewofthehills · 07/08/2012 21:19

Erk.
Think it will be a nightmare for all of you to be honest and everyone else in there. Could you get someone to come to your house? Or just get the colour or cut done and return for the rest next time.

McHappyPants2012 · 07/08/2012 21:19

No way :) get a mobile hairdresser

DunkyWhorey · 07/08/2012 21:20

2 year old's nap? Bwhahahahahahah!!!!!!

CharlotteBronzeySaurus · 07/08/2012 21:20

you know your DC

my 5yo is fine - sits on the ipod, or does some colouring
my nearly 2yo would be drinking peroxide and burning people with straighteners before I'd got her coat off.

bogeyface · 07/08/2012 21:20

Cut yes, colour no.

A 5 year old maybe, but a 2 year old? No way.

ShutTheFrontDoor · 07/08/2012 21:21

No. I rang everyone I knew last time similar happened to me but I would rather beg people than take them to a hairdressers for 2 hours I would guess?
When I was there someone had taken her 2 children and it was a nightmare for the mum, staff and other clients.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they left.
I also looked after my friends ds whilst she was having her hair done and dropped him there at the end. Her hairdresser thanked me personally as she said its a nightmare when there are young children around scissors, straighteners and colour.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 21:21

Well put it this way.

If your kids are playing up and you can't manage them would you...

Expect a member of staff to amuse them?

Leave with half a haircut?

Pay the hairdresser for their time, having given you half a haircut?

Would you ask the hairdresser to stop colouring your hair and leave with a wet, half coloured head....again paying the hairdresser for her time?

larks35 · 07/08/2012 21:23

I wouldn't.

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 07/08/2012 21:24

I'm not too worried about the 5year old - he loves it there (the kids have their hair cut in the kids salon) but the 2 year old is very much an unknown. good idea getting her to sleep for some of it (contemplates ever more complicated logistics)

If my roots and straggly ends weren't scaring me every time I look in the mirror I'd leave it.

If it was just a cut and blow you could at a pinch take them. But not a colour too. It would just take too long. And not safe either. Especially for the two year old.

YouOldSlag · 07/08/2012 21:27

YABVU

You will be stressed
Your hairdresser will be stressed
The other customers will be annoyed
You will wish you hadn't done it.

It's kind of like asking the staff to babysit whilst they are working- what if 2 yo runs out the door and you can't go after them? What if you are looking down whilst having the back done and can't see what they're up to?
What if they hurt themselves in the salon? the salon will be liable and you will feel awful.

There are probably H and S rules which say DON'T!

Having kids means making compromises and one of those looks like it's going to be change to a stylist who works on Saturdays!

SrirachaGirl · 07/08/2012 21:29

Good Lord, NO. Roots and scraggly ends are not the end of the world...and they're expensive. Wait until you can fully enjoy the experience Smile.

SrirachaGirl · 07/08/2012 21:30

...colour and cut are expensive, rather.

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/08/2012 21:30

Not being able to sort an appointment for a time when I won't have my 6yo and 2yo with me is why I have horribly overgrown rubbish hair at the moment

YouOldSlag · 07/08/2012 21:31

And don't bank on the 2yo going to sleep when you want her to. The little tikes have a little 2yo's handbook that tells them never to do this.

TheCountessOlenska · 07/08/2012 21:33

YY Sriracha - I'm not paying ££££ to chase my 2 year old round, I can do that for free at home! Ahhh 2 hours of drinking coffee and reading magazines uninterrupted!

Olympia2012 · 07/08/2012 21:33

That's a good point about the other customers. Too much potential for chaos to break out

IwishIwasinLondon · 07/08/2012 21:34

I took my 6 and 4 year olds yesterday while I had my nair cut. While they behaved themselves reasonably well, it's it an experience that I'm keen to repeat anytime soon. I was trying to keep an eye on them, hairdresser was trying to keep my head where she wanted it, dc discovered the up and down chairs, then the massage chairs.....

It was far from being the usual relaxing and enjoyable experience!

Forevergirl · 07/08/2012 21:37

Having worked on a hair salon DONT DO IT!!!!
You will be stressed, there is so much stuff for them to get injured on.
Also the majority of people in the salon will have left the kids with someone while they get some time to relax and won't be very happy with your DC being there.

Try and get a mobile hairdresser.

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 07/08/2012 21:44

There is a kids salon downstairs with a play area - it's not purely a grown up salon (shudders at thought of taking them somewhere like that) the owner actually suggested it as the stylist has changed their days at very short notice.

I am very doubtful about the wisdom of it though so am working my way through my phone book trying to find someone who can take them. The 5 yr old wouldn't be so hard but can't think who'd be willing to have the 2 yr old - best mate and family all away

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 21:46

Having a play area isn't going to stop them mithering you or the staff though.
