to ask how people afford the summer holidays?

I have two kids, one who's old enough to be left while I am out 08:30-17:30 working every day and one who's not.

I am feeling very guilty about the older one. She has done very little all holiday due to lack of funds. Today she walked 6.5 miles to meet friends for an hour.

Today she's been invited to a camp for a week for this Saturday. It's £50 for the week inc all food and activities. I don't have £50 today, to give her Sad

The younger one is doing a different activity every day as it's necessity childcare. All my money has gone on the younger one and day to day bills to get fuel.

I'm looking to see if there's anything I can sell for £50 to give to my dd. But I'm struggling.

AIBU to ask how much the holidays are costing others in childcare? And if anyone has any ideas how to make £50 in 24 hours please share.

Hmmmm. I'll help anyone genuine but dont like to have P*ss taken

nailak · 07/08/2012 00:56

I think ops daughter is amazing tbh.

I hope my daughters are as understanding as that, coz i certainly wasnt!

Noqontrol · 07/08/2012 00:57

Wouldn't it just be a glitch though, otherwise this post would show in a search, which it isn't.

LadySybildeChocolate · 07/08/2012 00:59

According to google, there's only this thread. Maybe the OP has namechanged?

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 01:00

You're right Noqontrol it must be a glitch because nothing is showing

But that's why I'm genuinely asking if the OP is a known poster?

doinmummy · 07/08/2012 01:06

I do believe the op is genuine though

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 01:08

Why do you believe it? Confused

I'm not saying it is or it isn't...because again I genuinely don't know Confused

But if anyone offering money to the OP knows for a fact they are genuine then fair play to them and my apologies.

If they don't, then I'd advise caution for very obvious reasons.

Anyway I'm off to bed...night all.

doinmummy · 07/08/2012 01:10

I'm a soft touch

Night

scarlettsmummy2 · 07/08/2012 01:16

I would use a credit card. Not ideal but that is really sad.

Waitingforthemagicbeans · 07/08/2012 07:52

I don't know why it isn't showing up in search this thread should.
No - or I don't think unless I've outed myself - none of these posters know who I am. I do regularly post but am a serial name changer.
The offers for help are absolutely amazing, I am shocked it hadn't occurred that would help.
I have a couple of pm re trumpet I'll get back to you.
When I told my dd that I could sell the trumpet and she can have the cash for the rest of her holidays she responded "but mum you could do with the money, you need it".
She's 15 years old, and I am so proud of her, and so humbled by the posters here.

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 07/08/2012 08:04

She sounds like a lovely girl. And you are doing a good job with her. You can have all the money in the world but as corny as it sounds it's no substitute for love. Yes, it would be nice to have both :)
But she sounds like a credit to you. Not all 15 year olds would react the same way, believe me.

I really hope the rest of the summer goes well for you xx

chocolatespiders · 07/08/2012 08:17

Some amazing people on this threadSmile

How old is your oldest?

Do you get help with childcare costs from tax credits? (this is the first year I have realised I can do this)

booksinbed · 07/08/2012 08:23

ive not got fifty quid but i have ten pounds happy to send to you - if it wd help to spit between folk xxlet me know ..

MadameCupcake · 07/08/2012 08:57

I would be happy to contribute a tenner if you PM me so you can put it towards something for her next week even if its a taxi to her friends (I have just forked out £260 for my 2 to go to day camps all week so I can work so can't offer more!)

Going forward what you need to do is work out how much you need for the hols and split it into 12 and try to save this every month. If you set up a standing order into a different account then you will have enough. I know not everyone has any spare cash monthly but even a tenner a month would give you £120.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 07/08/2012 09:21

I wish my dd(15) knew yours.
PM me for a tenner if you like. We could soon find £50 here.
BTW when I used to help with Guides needy members could get all sorts of help from central funding- I remember up to 70% for a very expensive 100 years of Guiding camp.

wibblywobbler · 07/08/2012 09:23

I would like to help aswell

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 07/08/2012 09:35

I could only send a couple of quid, but if everyone did it would be a great help, I'm sure.

I won't be spending any more in my DD as I'm on mat leave now, and she went to a summer school which cost £50 for the week.

Let us know how we can help?

TheCunningStunt · 07/08/2012 09:38

I'm sure the op is genuine too, but please be careful about sending money, MNers have been burnt before and are(as far as I know) not advised to send money. Buying a trumpet however, is perfectly good! Shame I don't need one as I play!

Waitingforthemagicbeans · 08/08/2012 22:29

Quick update -

My dd is off to camp with me paying in instalments - yay!
And a friend has invited her off on holiday for the last week of the holiday - yay!

AIBU to think my dd is having a better summer holiday than I am, with 2 weeks of fun holidays?!? Grin

I'm thrilled for her.

Thank you all so much for the generous offers of help. I hope karma repays you all in the way you deserve.
