to ask how people afford the summer holidays?

I have two kids, one who's old enough to be left while I am out 08:30-17:30 working every day and one who's not.

I am feeling very guilty about the older one. She has done very little all holiday due to lack of funds. Today she walked 6.5 miles to meet friends for an hour.

Today she's been invited to a camp for a week for this Saturday. It's £50 for the week inc all food and activities. I don't have £50 today, to give her Sad

The younger one is doing a different activity every day as it's necessity childcare. All my money has gone on the younger one and day to day bills to get fuel.

I'm looking to see if there's anything I can sell for £50 to give to my dd. But I'm struggling.

AIBU to ask how much the holidays are costing others in childcare? And if anyone has any ideas how to make £50 in 24 hours please share.

i was in the cadets and they waived nearly all of my costs for camps/subs etc. just speak to them, they will have a fund for it and if you want to pay it back when you can, then do so

Thegoddessblossom · 06/08/2012 21:49

Come back op!

JackJacksmummy · 06/08/2012 21:54

The people on this thread are amazing!

Totally know how you feel OP

Waitingforthemagicbeans · 06/08/2012 22:00

I'm back, thank you all so much for your kind messages.

I had to go to collect my dd from cadets, they are seeing if they can fund her, and we will know tomorrow.

She is such a good girl, she said 'its okay mum, you've paid for my childcare in the past, if I can't go then I understand.'

Thank you all so much for the offers, the generosity has astounded me. I hadn't come with cap in hand, I posted out of a 'urg what can I do' moment.

I will be seeing what I can do.

I've found that my trumpet is a Yamaha YTR 1335. I will put that on ebay, and if I get the cadet money, then anything I make from it will be given to my dd to have days out with her friends, without walking. I was shocked I didn't know she was going to walk, foolishly I didn't think how she was going to meet her friends, and of course the only way she could get there was walk.

But that's my dd she just gets on and does with no fuss.

Wow this is amazing Im welling up just reading it I hope she gets to go to the camp and congratulations lovely giving people on here Smile

halfbabyhalfbiscuit · 06/08/2012 22:15

Yes, please do take the offers. It's awful having to worry about having the £ to provide for your children.

It'd be a pleasure to give your DD some spending money, even if the cadets waive the charge. She sounds lovely.

Pastabee · 06/08/2012 22:18

I'll come in with halfbabyhalfbiscuit for some spending money for her. Would make me happy to think of her having a lovely time.

Please PM me your PayPal address and I'll send you some money tomorrow.

Numberlock · 06/08/2012 22:21

Tell you what, OP, you've given your daughter something that money can't buy. A wonderful, caring, selfless personality. What a lovely thing for her to say. How old is she?

piratecat · 06/08/2012 22:24

cahu · 06/08/2012 23:50

What a lovely thread...............The generosity of Mumsnet never fails to amaze me. I posted on money recently about a problem I had and I had a lot of handholding and a very lovely lady who is a solicitor gave me all the information I needed and even told me what to write in a letter to the creditors solicitor with all the legal jargon too.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 06/08/2012 23:52

Can I help too?

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 06/08/2012 23:53

Pm me as well, I'll stick a bit in PayPal for bus fares etc.

Just pay it forward when you are able and someone else is in need.

I had to borrow money from 7 different people when dd was in year 7 cos everyone else was going to France on a school trip and I was so skint I wasn't eating.

And a month later, had to borrow again to get ds1 school shoes.

There's a lot of kind people in the world, now I'm in a better financial position, I want to pass it on, and help. And I'm sure when you are able, you'll do the same for someone else.

Please, please pm me xx

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:39

You ladies are amazing. And OP well done for raising such a lovely girl.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:46

Flame me if you will but does anyone know the OP?

Is he/she a regular?

I only ask because the search doesn't bring up any posts at all....not even this one? Confused

LadySybildeChocolate · 07/08/2012 00:49

Hmm, seems odd Worra.

doinmummy · 07/08/2012 00:52

I'll never forget the kindness of a bank teller. My Ex DP had cleared out the account.I had no money and 9 Month old to look after. I asked for a small overdraft but computer said no. I mustered all my dignity, smiled through my tears and walked out of the Bank. The lady ran after me waving a tenner. She said the computer had allowed me to have £10 but I knew it was from her own purse. I was so skint I took the money.

If I can help anyone else now I will.I feel like it's passing on the baton of kindness that the Bank lady showed me.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:53

I'm genuinely asking (believe me I'd say if I was taking the piss Grin ) because the search is bringing up nothing at all.

Of course it could be a glitch and the OP is a trusted regular

But otherwise, it's fecking bonkers!
