To be disappointed that we now have a Bright House store on our high street?

Sad

Perhaps the final nail in the coffin.

The have also built a YMCA homeless hostel and the people there spend a lot of their time harassing and shouting at passers by. We can no longer make it to the supermarket due to being harassed.

We used to have a nice high street, but it's just full of scruffy thrift stores and charity shops now.

I know there's a recession on and we do like to visit thrift stores sometimes, but don't want an entire street to decline like this.

Our street is so crap even Bon Marche have left Shock

We got a Bright House last year too, right in the main shopping arcade in a prime spot. Wankers, I hate them. A friend asked them if she could buy something outright once, as they are such a central store- she was told no! Fucking sharks.

Birdsgottafly · 06/08/2012 19:28

We've had them in Liverpool/huyton for over 10 years, the've changed their name to 'perfect home'.

It's ridiculous Zukiecat. And it feeds customers to places like Brighthouse.

McHappyPants2012 · 06/08/2012 20:01

I really do not get why people would use brighthouse I would rather free cycle or buy 2nd hand then pay treble what an item is worth

Don't think we have a Brighthouse round here. Just got a John Lewis though Grin

not that I can afford anything other than the pound shop

Birdsgottafly · 07/08/2012 01:54

buy 2nd hand

How do you do that when you don't have any money and you think that the only lesuire you can afford for the children is television?

If all of your family and friends are in the same situation you don't have anyone who can give you anything or help you with transport.

carernotasaint · 07/08/2012 02:03

Our high street is full of charity shops and estate agent and one department store. We have won one of the Mary Portas thingies but she can dress up our High Street as much as she likes. It wont make any difference because its already destroyed. And if people havent got the money to spend, then they wont spend. End of.

carernotasaint · 07/08/2012 02:03

Sorry i meant estate agentS there is a lot more than one.

Graciescotland · 07/08/2012 02:10

I do know what you mean regarding the homeless shelter. I used to work for a fast food place next door to one. They'd open at ten and people would wait outside from about nine and for that hour the drivers would get abused, harassed and threatened as they came in and out. Whilst I'm sure they had various problems it's horrible to listen to that sort of thing on a regular basis.

DameDoom · 07/08/2012 02:59

Our front street is now littered with 7 charity shops, 3 betting shops, 3 bakers, 2 chemists (one is Superdrug which is v useful but the other is a methadone outlet) and cut price dodgy nail salons. My opticians is still there and I asked him why it had got so run down. According to him, each retail outlet (unless charidee) costs £60,000 per year to rent. My optician owns his outlet so, until he retires (soon) he can afford to stay put.
It has the potential to be lovely but is fast becoming hell on earth. One empty shop opens is September selling only fireworks in the run up to Nov 5th.
It really attracts 'the wrong sort of people' and is terrifying for our older residents. This is one mile away from Europe's most celebrated church-type edifice.

McHappyPants2012 · 07/08/2012 06:05

Damedone why did you mention methadone in your last post. How about some support for users trying to kick an addiction and dependency to heroin

honeytea · 07/08/2012 08:38

Oh I love second hand shops! We only have 1 in my town, I wish they woud open some more. I love buying lovely funky 70's baby outfits from them :)

directoroflegacy · 07/08/2012 08:45

You have a supermarket in your high street!?
That's unusual!!

ColouringIn · 07/08/2012 08:49

I have never used Brighthouse but am on the point of doing so after the second used cooker I have had has gone wayward.

Second hand is always fine with me but it does mean that you have to have the money up front which you don't need with the likes of Brighthouse. They are extortionate though and I would far rather buy another secondhand one.....just don't know where I am going to find the cash.

Freecycle are great too and I have given good stuff away there just so it can be re-used by someone who needs it. I have also had an ancient lawnwmower via Freecycle which is still going strong.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/08/2012 08:54

Where are you? I can't think of anywhere near me that doesn't have a bright house!

ViviPru · 07/08/2012 08:55

The traditional high street is an outmoded business model. The recession has simply exacerbated this and speeded up the decline. Mary Portas' vision of reinstating the high street as a friendly, independent bustling realm of commerce is nothing but a nice idea IMO. It's a sad truth but we need to get used to it I think.

BrianButterfield · 07/08/2012 09:00

We walk past Bright House and read the labels which say how much you end up paying, and it's a disgrace. Out and out ursury, and taking advantage of the people who can least afford it. Absolutely disgusting.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/08/2012 09:03

I have been to the bhf second hand furniture shops and they are still expensive if you are on a low income. You can't pay in instalments.
But I hate Brighthouse and the way it exploits poverty.
We have a massive YMCA hostel near me. I use the gym and have never had any problems.
I think you are pearl clutching

GhostShip · 07/08/2012 09:10

So not only are you being 'harrassed' by the neighbours and having stuf chucked through your window (previous topic) you're getting targeted by homeless people as simply 'can't make it to the supermarket'

Sorry OP but I'm starting to think you're a liccle bit hard work.

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 07/08/2012 09:13

I use my YMCA gym as well, and the DCs use it as well.

No one has ever spat at me

Brighthouse fulfil a need, ok so the APR is no doubt astronomical but it's the same as pay day loan companies, sadly there are people who use these companies as a last resort, you might not be one of those OP, but to imply its lowering the tone of your street is a bit..well stuck up your own arse for want of a better phrase.

ouryve · 07/08/2012 09:16

I'm still racking my brains for a NE town with a supermarket at the end of the high street that didn't already have a brighthouse.
