'Swearing'

In the last two (quite stressful) weeks, I have argued with my Husband over 'Jesus Christ' (used not in a row, but cos DS made a fuss over something) and just then 'Bloody' during a row. He said 'Jesus Christ' is not a swear word, still its blasphemy and whilst I am not very religious I still don't like it and prefer that my 4 year old doesn't hear it from his own Dad (then repeat it to people who might really mind).
Also 'Bloody'he said is not a swear word. Well, still don't want son to hear it and also 3 year old friend who is round playing (though he is Dutch).
Am I being unreasonable??

He needs to watch his language especially with kids around.

I hate blasphemy.

picnicbasketcase · 06/08/2012 16:31

I think they are very minor as swear words go, if they are even regarded as such anymore. But if you don't like it, YANBU to not want them said around children.

FeakAndWeeble · 06/08/2012 16:32

It's obviously not nice to swear in front of your children but it's probably better to not make a fuss when your DH does let something like this out (they're not really that awful as swears go), then your DS won't pick up on it. Better that than argue which he may well overhear and can be far more distressing for a 4 year old than hearing a bad word.

squeakytoy · 06/08/2012 16:32

I would say they are fairly mild expletives. I often heard my parents use them. Never once heard them say anything else (ie Shit, or Fuck), and I never swore in front of them despite them swearing, and didnt swear in front of anyone else either. Even as an adult I rarely swore in their presence.

I learnt all my swearing as soon as I got to high school! Grin

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/08/2012 16:34

I am not religious at all but for some reason I dont like blasphemy and will pull DS up on it if he ever says something like that.

Bloody is a swear word but doesnt bother me too much...DH is dreadful for swearing and I am always pulling him up on it. DS is almost 10 now and knows never to swear himself and he is at that stage where if he hears someone else swear he finds it hilarious - well, words like shit and crap.....dont suppose he would find the worse ones funny!

Personally I'm fond of a bit of blasphemy.

usualsuspect · 06/08/2012 16:41

I don't mind a bit of blasphemy TBH.

I quite like 'christ on a bike'

I say Jesus fuck sometimes.

squoosh · 06/08/2012 16:42

I'm a big 'JESUS MARY AND JOESEPH'er.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/08/2012 16:43

My colleague says God's teeth a lot..I dont really understand that one!

MagicMikesThong · 06/08/2012 16:43

I find that "cripes!" is a very underused term Grin

My mum was a fan of Jeesy Peeps!

squoosh · 06/08/2012 16:44

God's Teeth is an oldie. I see it in Tudor set novels. Also, God's Wounds.

nickelbarapasaurus · 06/08/2012 16:45

they are swearwords.

full-stop.

if you are teaching a child.

MagicMikesThong · 06/08/2012 16:45

I agree with usual - I like Christ on a Bike Grin.

I am a Christian, and I went through a phase of being very defensive at blasphemy, but I tend to just let it go now and have slipped into doing it myself sometimes.

I think "Christ on a bike" is a lovely image anyway Grin

ThePigOnTheWall · 06/08/2012 16:52

In my experience, Dutch people don't always appreciate the strength of some English swear words as I found out when DP called someone a cunt at a family BBQ

sunmonkey · 06/08/2012 16:53

Thanks everyone...I think its a personal choice (even if the words are not that bad - I still don't like it) and I do agree with FeakAndWeeble - actually heard my son saying 'Oh my God' which I say quite often - (will try to stop) Blush and told him not to say it any more as well, I suggest words like off the list from euphemia instead like 'oh bananas' or something.
Husband has now stormed off, I think its more the anger that is so obviously associated with swearing as well.

nickelbarapasaurus that is how I feel too actually, but wasn't sure if I was being too prissy thus making Husband even more angry!

I love when people don't realise the full impact of English swear words and bounce them around willy nilly!

sunmonkey · 06/08/2012 17:03

LOL squoosh must admit, that did make me smile! DS did go through short phase of 'Fuck' (again from Husband) when he was about two (said amidst silence in the car infront of very religious American relatives). Just said to say 'Fudge' instead.

RawShark · 06/08/2012 17:30

Try this for acceptable swearing - I like "puttocks" best

Moxxie · 06/08/2012 19:56

It may be controversial, but I don't really have a massive problem with swearing in front of children, within reason. Not fuck etc or anything at that end of the spectrum, but shit, bloody, damn, crap are all fine.
To be clear, they are not fine for children to say, but they are not going to melt at the sound of them - they will hear far worse in the street and sometimes you (I) just need to (yes, maybe I am uneducated/uncouth/have a poor vocab... blah).

My parents swore like that in front of me and my brother, but it was clear that they were words for adults to use, and not us. Just like all the other things that adults can do but children can't. I was probably about 15 before I started saying crap in front of my parents, and was well into uni before I said anything much worse!

WelshMaenad · 06/08/2012 19:59

We had takeaway last week and my 2 year old DS came out with "oh my Dod.. Dassa big fish!" at the size if his dad's meal.

I'm a big fan of blasphemy that's cute.

Krumbum · 06/08/2012 20:03

Neither of those words are swear words Confused
How old are you?
