To feel embarrassed that we are so cushioned from austerity

because we live in social housing.

My rent is about £100 a week, for a 3 bed terraced house in a seaside village in the south east. We can easily pay this, and have 'plenty' of money to spare each week.

We can't however get anywhere near buying a house, because it's just too expensive, and we're also self-employed precariously so I doubt anyone would give us a mortgage.
So we should rent privately. Except our rent would then be £100-£150 more for a similar place per week. When I say we have plenty over, I certainly don't mean that sort of money.
So basically we can either stay put, taking up social housing that could be used for someone in need (as I once was), and saving/spending a couple of hundred a month. Or I can go private, where we would have to go to a cheaper area, change schools, cause problems for work, lose security and be utterly skint! (Like the rest of you)

The only conclusion is that my rent should be higher.

Is it really greedy to have 2 goats?

ThreeWheelsGood · 05/08/2012 21:50

Wish I hadn't read this. We're in London, average income but too high to apply for social housing, plus waiting lists are thousands long. FFS. We'll never be in a position to buy, feel helpless, always at mercy of private landlords - incredibly high rents at the mo, more potential tenants than properties out there, urgh.

HecateHarshPants · 05/08/2012 21:51

I just googled that, catgirl - SOOOOO cute! I want one too.

I am in HA accom, so I could keep it in my back garden. Along with yours...

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 05/08/2012 21:51

Pouff the more you. Explain the more deranged you sound.

If you qoute my circumstances in you're daily mail article tomorrow can you describe me as early 20's and slimish?

pouffepants · 05/08/2012 21:51

If I had a hope in hell of getting a mortgage squeaky I would do that, but I don't so I would have to be a complete loon to give up my tenancy for a private one.

Id have a boy goat a girl goat and they would fall in love and have baby goats have to be pygmy though not those devil goats with the floopy ears they scare me Grin

usualsuspect · 05/08/2012 21:53

The state of the current housing market is NOT the fault of social housing tenants.

squeakytoy · 05/08/2012 21:54

Why do you not have any chance of getting a mortgage? There are plenty of options available. Move away from the seaside if the area is expensive.

Try blaming Maggie Thatcher.

BonkeyHasGOLDMollocks · 05/08/2012 21:55

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 05/08/2012 21:56

Olympia2012 · 05/08/2012 21:57

threewheels you earn too much for social housing? They never asked me about income when I applied.

Mrsjay · 05/08/2012 21:57

TUT @ pets no eating the baby animals Grin I cant eat lamb this thread has now gone bonkers

pouffepants · 05/08/2012 21:58

Any mortgage provider would laugh at the insecurity of our income.

Both me and dh deliver stuff, but it massively fluctuates depending on what contracts we have.

The only secure income is 6k which dh earns through care work.

Obviously can't move very far away because then we wouldn't have jobs at all.

Yabuaw

Olympia2012 · 05/08/2012 22:00

usual why just blame thatcher when the right to buy still exists. Why dont they remove that? I took a new tenancy in march on a brand new house. In all the literature I was given was a massive folder full of details on 'the right to acquire'

BonkeyHasGOLDMollocks · 05/08/2012 22:00

Op

Dig, dig, dig......

LST · 05/08/2012 22:00

Op out of curiosity. Did you want people to tell you you were BU or you weren't?

I still don't understand the point of the thread.

pouffepants · 05/08/2012 22:00

Seriously bonkey? I have to admit to not looking into buying very much, due to hearing all the problems with the housing market. I just assumed you have to earn megabucks.

I don't know anyone who owns a house (apart from my parents)

Exactly how are you "cushioned from austerity"?

Save up your £50 a week. Stay in HA accomodation.

BonkeyHasGOLDMollocks · 05/08/2012 22:01

If you haven't looked into buying then how the he'll do you know???

usualsuspect · 05/08/2012 22:01

I blame Maggie Thatcher for everything TBH.
