To feel embarrassed that we are so cushioned from austerity

because we live in social housing.

My rent is about £100 a week, for a 3 bed terraced house in a seaside village in the south east. We can easily pay this, and have 'plenty' of money to spare each week.

We can't however get anywhere near buying a house, because it's just too expensive, and we're also self-employed precariously so I doubt anyone would give us a mortgage.
So we should rent privately. Except our rent would then be £100-£150 more for a similar place per week. When I say we have plenty over, I certainly don't mean that sort of money.
So basically we can either stay put, taking up social housing that could be used for someone in need (as I once was), and saving/spending a couple of hundred a month. Or I can go private, where we would have to go to a cheaper area, change schools, cause problems for work, lose security and be utterly skint! (Like the rest of you)

The only conclusion is that my rent should be higher.

catgirl2012 · 05/08/2012 21:33

Thanks bonkey

This is the sort of thing, which, if I read it in the DM, would think it was made up to stir up resentment for people in social housing

So glad it's not

usualsuspect · 05/08/2012 21:33

missymoomoomee, A week in a caravan Shock how very dare you.

BonkeyHasGOLDMollocks · 05/08/2012 21:33

I should have left when I said I would!

Gah!

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 05/08/2012 21:33

Missy people in social houses don't go On holidays! You should be kicked out and live under a bridge in a cardboard box for abusing others hard earned taxes

How's that?

AKissIsNotAContract · 05/08/2012 21:34

Is your main job delivering Next catalogues?

Mrsjay · 05/08/2012 21:34

My kids got holidays and activities and a music lesson and and

pouffepants · 05/08/2012 21:34

I don't get why people think I want them to feel sorry for me, I just want a discussion on social policy based on my circumstances.

catgirl2012 · 05/08/2012 21:34

Sorry OP

That was someone else

littlemisssarcastic · 05/08/2012 21:35

Agree with MrsJay.

Why is the only solution you can think of for the social housing rents to increase OP?
Shouldn't everyone enjoy having a few pounds leftover after they have paid their essential bills?
Why does it always always have to be a race to the bottom???

rhondajean · 05/08/2012 21:35

29k is about 1800 a month. You're paying 400 rent, all your bills, two cars, going on holidays, paying for clubs and feeding five people on that, and you still can save 200 a month???

missymoomoomee · 05/08/2012 21:35

I know usual I feel just awful about it so I thought that I would post it on here in an effort to make myself feel better show off about what I can afford.

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 05/08/2012 21:36

You are being ridiculous. You can't afford to rent privately and thankfully there is still some affordable, good quality social housing around. You are as "deserving" of the tenancy as anyone else who isn't rich as Croesus. We need more decent housing, sure, but you feeling angsty won't help!

pouffepants · 05/08/2012 21:39

My point is that I shouldn't have an advantage, so I guess bringing private rents down to similar amounts would probably be a better solution, although more difficult to implement.

she can play well now and is grown up i keep waiting on her to join a band and be famous so she can pay me back

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 05/08/2012 21:40

Dear god how confusing.

So your saying as a point of principle you earn too much to be in social housing and you should go private?

Really?

Why not just do it then?

Confused.

catgirl2012 · 05/08/2012 21:40

That's a well thought out and workable idea pouffe.

Are you an economist?

LST · 05/08/2012 21:41

pouffe so you'd prefer people in HA to struggle instead?

Olympia2012 · 05/08/2012 21:41

So you think everyone should be means tested?

missymoomoomee · 05/08/2012 21:41

Thank you pets I feel like a fraud being in social housing AND having a week in a caravan but the system isn't my fault. You chastising my downright selfishness has made me feel better though. Grin
