To wear jeans to an interview?

extremepie · 05/08/2012 13:29

Just that really!

I have an interview coming up for a job I really really want but I have no suits or smart clothes at all!

WIBU to wear smart jeans with some nice shoes and a nice top (don't have any 'shirts')?

I don't have the money to buy new clothes, the interview is in another part of the country so I'm having to pay £££ just to get there - I also can't borrow off friends or family as there are all skinnier a completely different size to me!

FWIW, it's a chef job, not anything particularly high brow!
Do you think jeans would be ok or would they think I'm not trying hard enough?

I'd gat a £10 pair of black trousers from a supermarket or charity shop. Think of it as an investment. If you get this job you'll be able to afford the £10. If not, you'll need them for the next interview.

Proudnscary · 05/08/2012 13:33

It might be fine but there's a chance they'll think you are rude and not taking the interview seriously - so don't take that chance.

I work in a very laid back kind of industry, sartorially speaking, but I'd be a bit Hmm at jeans in an interview.

The sales are on - you can get a pair of alright black trousers for under a tenner at Gap or H&M or Primark.

HappyCamel · 05/08/2012 13:33

By the way, a charity shop may well let you swop some other clothes if you explain.

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2012 13:34

Primark!

You can get smart black trousers for £5 from Primark.

Don't go to an interview in jeans.

LiegeAndLief · 05/08/2012 13:35

Hmm. Lots of people at my work wear jeans to work but we would be a bit surprised by someone turning up to an interview in jeans. If you can possibly get something else I wouldn't wear them.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 05/08/2012 13:36

black trousers are ?6 in primark here, must be even less in £.
don't wear jeans, trousers with a nice top is much better

LAlady · 05/08/2012 13:36

Can you borrow trousers/skirt from someone? Jeans - big no for an interview.

extremepie · 05/08/2012 13:37

Do they let you swap happy camel? I've never done that before, I didn't think they would but I have a whole bag of stuff to take so maybe I could try it....

YWBU yes. Get a cheap pair from asda/primark/charity shop.

FourEyesGood · 05/08/2012 13:38

Agree with charity shop suggestions. There's some great stuff about! And if your town has local charity shops (rather than nationals such as Oxfam, British Heart Foundation, etc.) , they tend to be much cheaper. Good luck at the interview!

ilovesooty · 05/08/2012 13:38

I also work in a sector where jeans and T-shirt is fine for everyday work wear.

Jeans to an interview though? Big NO. Get a cheap pair of smart black trousers.

StealthPolarBear · 05/08/2012 13:38

What size are you OP? I'm currently getting rid of a load of clothes, happy to post a pair to you if our sizes match

notsofrownieface · 05/08/2012 13:38

Sainsburys do an 'economy' range of clothes, black trousers are £5 and a white shirt is approx £4.

Do not go in jeans, 1st impressions count.

WithoutCaution · 05/08/2012 13:41

I don't think it's all that U to wear jeans to a low payed job interview - Though it does depend on the type of job/ how much you want it etc. I've worn smart jeans, shoes and a top for two interviews before I set up my own business and got both the jobs.

squeakytoy · 05/08/2012 13:41

Agree with the others, dont wear jeans. Smart black trousers, even if you get them for a couple of quid from the charity shop are a must, and if you havent got a blouse or shirt, then a plain neutral tshirt is fine.

pigletmania · 05/08/2012 13:42

surely op you could stretch to 5/6 quid, it could be a matter or getting the job or not

extremepie · 05/08/2012 13:42

I have tried primary and charity shops recently but they seem to be very sparse on my size, last time in primary didn't have a single pair of black trousers in either a 14 or 16 (my size). They pretty much exclusively had 8's and 18's! Weird!

Thanks for the offer stealth but am in a bit of a rush as they need to interview me urgently, need them by Wednesday :)

Seriously, I can send them 1st class on Monday - but I realise that might be cutting it finec and you'd want to know all was sorted.
Unless you're in County Durham??

squeakytoy · 05/08/2012 13:43

"I don't think it's all that U to wear jeans to a low payed job interview"

Plenty of chefs are not low paid, however many employers will also consider personal presentation as an indicator of how you might run a kitchen, and will be looking for neatness and someone who has made an effort.

extremepie · 05/08/2012 13:45

Good suggestion about sainsburys but unfortunately the one closest to me is only a little one that doesn't do clothes :(
Could try tesco?

WithoutCaution · 05/08/2012 13:45

Does it have to be trousers or could you wear a skirt or dress?

WithoutCaution · 05/08/2012 13:47

If it's a high paying job then definitely not jeans have no idea what chef jobs pay

FourEyesGood · 05/08/2012 13:47

OP Where are you? You're my size and I'd happily lend you some of my smart clothes. I'm in Sheffield.
