To wear jeans to an interview?

Just that really!

I have an interview coming up for a job I really really want but I have no suits or smart clothes at all!

WIBU to wear smart jeans with some nice shoes and a nice top (don't have any 'shirts')?

I don't have the money to buy new clothes, the interview is in another part of the country so I'm having to pay £££ just to get there - I also can't borrow off friends or family as there are all skinnier a completely different size to me!

FWIW, it's a chef job, not anything particularly high brow!
Do you think jeans would be ok or would they think I'm not trying hard enough?

I could wear a dress or skirt but again I don't have any smart ones - either floaty summer dresses or bum skimming going-out ones. Neither are really suitable for this particular job :D

Ditto, County Durham. I am exactly the same size as you - 14 to16

and I'll be in York tomorrow , if tha helps?

Extreme, where abouts in the country are you? I have a black pencil skirt in size 16 or I think I still have a pair of black trousers.

I'm just outside Barnsley and am not working Monday or Tuesday if you can get to me.

Not strictly ethical, but you could buy some, wear them, leave the label in then take them back if you don't get the job? If you get the job, then you can afford to keep them? I know, I know, but needs must and all that ...

clemetteattlee · 05/08/2012 13:56

Ignore Boris, that is it only unethical, it is illegal.

Good luck with the interview.

I wouldn't - not sure what is normal for a chef's job, but generally even if the everyday dress code is quite casual, you'd want to go a bit smarter for the interview.

Though if you have no other choices, the smart jeans are probably better than the floaty/mini dresses!

And if you do end up wearing them, make sure you go in there with confidence and not feeling all self-conscious and apologetic. Clothes do matter for an interview, but attitude and demeanour matter even more IMO.

I've done it several times and always got the job.

FWIW I think as long as you are neat, tidy and presentable you're fine. I think you'd look worse in a pair of ill fitting shiney cheap trousers than in a pair of jeans and a well thought out smart ensemble.

MrsKeithRichards · 05/08/2012 13:59

I interview in my work and rarely notice what people are wearing as long as they are clean and tidy and at ease.

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2012 14:03

I think a floaty summer dress would be ok for an interview

Certainly better than jeans anyway.
