To get annoyed by a solicitor pleading poverty?

DBiL is a solicitor (graduated in 2001, did his conversion and been working ever since). DSiL is a teacher.

Whenever we see them he's always making little comments about how "it's alright for us" cause we have a "big house" etc etc. As a couple we probably do earn more but (a) who cares? And (b) why should I be made to feel guilty about this?

I've always thought as a solicitor DBiL would earn well anyway? He's hinted he's a lower rate tax payer but I can't imagine he's too far off. I don't care what people earn but I'm just fed up of him acting like they're so hard done by.

Now I am curious though, what would a (south east but not London) solicitor earn who's been working since 2001?

Sorry - I'm not sure what people mean about sensitivity around his status? Are people suggesting I'm jealous as he's a solicitor and I'm not?

We're in totally different professions but I imagine we're at similar levels, possibly i am more 'senior' but I can assure you I'm not jealous!

I mean that your bil automatically gains respect as a solicitor. The same is true for professions such as medicine, accountancy etc. I often feel that people envy this status. A previous poster talked about the fact that she felt cheerful about the fact that not all solicitors are paid well, which i think proves my point.

Oh, I get you! I've never looked at things like that to be honest. I definitely don't feel jealous of him being a solicitor - fantastic that e got to do the job he wanted but that sort of suited office job just isn't for me!!

P.s. I've always looked at job like solicitor and accountant and thought 'dull'. Takes all sorts doesn't it!!

Cash hope you are ok. My solicitor DH was made redundant not long after I'd had our 2nd DC. Still standing, just about.
