To wonder what Black athletes have....

CrispyCod · 04/08/2012 21:21

......that make them so superior in performance. It has to be genetic. I am in awe of them as they appear to glide effortlessly around the track. The Jamaican athletes are just wow! Their speed is just amazing.

I believe that black people are superior in strength, esp inner strength than any other race in this world.

Their strength is like no other.

Amazing people.

I'm not sure whether to pull this face Hmm, this face Grin or just bask in my super duper amazingness!

For fucks sake...

JudysDreamHorse · 13/08/2012 23:20

Has anyone posted this already?

JudysDreamHorse · 13/08/2012 23:23

Ah - yes.

Aeryn · 13/08/2012 23:30

From the article

"The fallacy, then, is simple. Just because some black people are good at something does not imply that black people in general will be good at it."

Could it be the inference here isn't that black people in general will be good at something, but that the best of the best tend to be black? I'm not taking sides on this one either way yet. I'm just wondering if the article ha picked up people's assumptions the wrong way, ie not that they think all black people will be good at something but that they are doing better and just want to know why, like the OP.

Aeryn · 13/08/2012 23:32

*that they are doing better in these sports (To clarify)

waterlego6064 · 13/08/2012 23:40

Ok. So to ask a similar question from a different angle (and desperately hoping not to cause offence in the process): Why are so many of the successful cyclists white? Genuine question.

Aeryn · 13/08/2012 23:49

I've no clue about the cycle thing either waterlego but, directly out of this thread, I've been inspired to go to the main city library for a day in the books. I mentioned wanting to do some Historical reading and she suggested making a day of it. I'm really looking forward to it. It's not something I get to do and is all very impromptu.

CrispyCod · 13/08/2012 23:53

There was another reason that prompted me to post the OP. Watching the Olympics reminded me...

When I was at school I was a very fast runner and used to represent the school in competitions etc. There were always two schools which we lost to every single time, they were fantastic, amazingly fast. ALL the runners were Black.

Now, bearing in mind we all had equal access and opportunities with regard to training etc it still made me believe that they had something more, something special. It just made me think about it again when I saw the Olympics.

I think there have been some excellent and thought provoking posts on this thread. It's been interesting.

It's not selective breaking surely! What a HmmHmm reply to your post op. the masais darin Kenya were not selectively bred, now were the Ugandans!! HmmHmmHmm

Aeryn · 13/08/2012 23:58

*mentioned to my friend that I wanted to do some Historical reading.

LucyBorgia · 14/08/2012 00:00

This has been an interesting thread. I think there are afew people looking for things to get offended about. I defend the op I think the topic was worthy of discussion in a public forum there are always going to be a few who take it too far....

CrispyCod · 14/08/2012 00:05

After starting this thread I did a bit of searching on the Internet trying to find out why we are how we are, particularly referring to skin colour. There are lots of theories none of which can be proven totally. One interesting piece told of how we all descend from black skin and how over the centuries from moving out of the sun to cooler climes our skin adjusted. Who's to say then that we didn't have that initial 'speed' gene which has also been lost/diluted as humans have evolved. I'm not really putting this across too well but it's hard to explain.

OP posts:
Silibilimili · 14/08/2012 00:20

I agree with the genetics theory. It's more plausible than the 'slavery' theory.

Silibilimili · 14/08/2012 00:24

I will be flamed for this but does this make black people more superior. I.e., equal of intelligence and better if physic than the rest of the world? Hmm

CrispyCod · 14/08/2012 00:26

Possibly so Silibilimili

I'd been inclined to believe so.

I thought that too.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/08/2012 00:47

Keshorn Walcott won the Olympic Javelin Gold Medal on Saturday.

Prior to him every single Javelin Gold Medal for decades has been won by a white European male. The 10 greatest Javelin throwers of all time are all white European males. Are white European males genetically more able to throw a Javelin than all other people?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/08/2012 00:49

Apologies Breaux Greer at No. 9 of the ten greatest is a white American male (probably of European ancestry)

heartmoonshadow · 14/08/2012 06:47

I recall being told once in a biology lesson that black athletes are generally better because of their fat to muscle ratio. I have to say you can really see the power on some of them I dream on!

droves · 14/08/2012 07:37

I always thought it was height and not race that had an impact on speed around the track . Tall people have longer legs , so take bigger strides , so are faster .

Wish I could run ( short arse )

MaryPoppinsBag · 14/08/2012 07:40

Jessica Ennis is 5'4" much shorter that the Silver and Bronze medalists in her event.

Shocked that so many people seem to have never had this conversation this before!

It's not the easiest subject to raise really, is it? Often anything anyone wonders about any race- the slightest question -is misread as racism. It's easier just to keep zips on lips to avoid any hysterical reactions to simple curiosity.

Of-course, there are people who I can talk to about anything without fear of being lambasted, but they're all as interested in sport as me (as in not at all!) so it's not a likely thing to come up in passing chat.

In the times I have thought about it it's been fleeting because, as I said, wondering anything about people with a different skin colour is excuse enough for some to bring out the torches and pitchforks.

Aeryn · 14/08/2012 08:25

creighton I'm talking about the people picking people's words apart (like the poster who scolded the other poster for being detatchead with her wording.

Why do you keep going on at me about scientists? That's twice you've mentioned them when quoting me in relation to things I've said. I haven't mentioned science, or theft, or denied that black people have had it worse than white people in terms of simply being allowed to be a part of society. As a disabled person I have a lot of experience in that area but I don't think it's got anything to do with things I've said on this thread.

Stop being hysterical.

Aeryn · 14/08/2012 08:30

FWIW I do think of and have questions about white people and people of other races- even white. It's just not got anthing to do with the question raised by the OP. I've never indicated that I'm not happy to discuss things attributed to other races...
