to think Im not responsible for pregnancy

Sometimes I walk a neighbours dog as a favour as I'm out with ds and the buggy so its an easy favour which I do for free. My neighbour likes it as it saves her a walk.

So last week I took the dog to the park and let her off the lead as neighbour told me to when the informal arrangement started a year or so ago. To my shock, a few minutes later, the dog was involved in some very unromantic relations, which neither I nor the other dog carer could stop...to make it worse a second male dog got involved.

I had no idea the dog I was walking was on heat or even not spayed. My neighbour is saying I am responsible for her dogs pregnancy. I think I'm not responsible, as she should have told me this may happen and then I would have kept the dog on the lead or not walked her in the first place. Aibu?

YANBU

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 04/08/2012 16:15

YAnBu.
Bet she wishes she'd got off her arse herself.

SilkySmith · 04/08/2012 16:16

Of course they should have told you, we had to change how we managed our dog when she was on heat, of course you can't properly prevent a dog's pregnancy if you are not told that they are on heat!

SparklingGoldMedals · 04/08/2012 16:16

YANBU. Neighbour needs to get the dog spayed too.

kinkynagbag · 04/08/2012 16:16

at the very least she should have told you she was on heat sop not to let her off and tbh she should have had her done had she not wanted babies!!

hand her a biccy and tell her to jog on and find some one else to walk her mutts.

TheRealMrsSmith · 04/08/2012 16:17

YANBU! Your neighbour should have known the dog was in season and either told you not to let her off the lead or walked the dog herself. FWIW I think the neighbour is irresponsible for not having the dog spayed.

JeezyPeeps · 04/08/2012 16:17

Of course YANBU. If she didn't want her dog to get pregnant, she should have had her spayed, or warned you that she wasn't.

But .... Puppies! How lovely!

Salmotrutta · 04/08/2012 16:18

Cheeky besom - you are doing her a favour AND she didn't tell you the dog was in season!! What a nerve!

NOT your responsibility. Don't walk her dog again!

AnnieLobeseder · 04/08/2012 16:18

If she didn't say anything to you, how on earth are you responsible? I hope you got ID off the male dogs though, so your neighbour can claim child support! Grin

ValiumQueen · 04/08/2012 16:18

If you were a professional dog walker possibly, but you would have asked certain questions first, and had legal cover. You were doing her a favour, and she is the one who should have ensured her dog was protected. YANBU.

FelicitywasSarca · 04/08/2012 16:19

Yanbu!

SparklingGoldMedals · 04/08/2012 16:19

Shouldn't everyone have their dogs 'done'? You could say it was the fault of the male dog's owner.

DizzyKipper · 04/08/2012 16:19

YANBU, she should have told you so that you could have been extra-vigilant or refused to walk her. Is this neighbour trying to hold you financially responsible as well?

WaterGypsy · 04/08/2012 16:19

Ooh, what sort of dog is it/ will the puppies be? I'd love a puppy! :)

squeakytoy · 04/08/2012 16:21

"what sort of dog is it/ will the puppies be?"

By the sounds of it, it could be a choice of two... Grin

Jeremy Kyle could do a doggy special!

honeytea · 04/08/2012 16:21

yanbu! unless it was a nice posh dag and the puppies will sell for loads, then you should claim half the profit!

janey68 · 04/08/2012 16:21

Is there money to be made from the pups? If so- yes you're responsible, if not - then no!

messtins · 04/08/2012 16:22

YANBU if you were not warned she was in season. Tell the owner to take her to the vet, there is a an injection that can be given to prevent a pregnancy from progressing - 2 injections 24 hours apart any time up to 6 weeks pregnant but the earlier the better or it can cause obvious signs of abortion. If she is not wanted for breeding they ought to get her spayed. Don't you dare let her say you should pay either!

saintmerryweather · 04/08/2012 16:24

sparklinggoldmedals - if the male happens to be a show dog he wouldnt have been castrated- its one of the things they look for.

hawaiiWave · 04/08/2012 16:24

Part of the problem is that as there were two other dogs I don't know who the father is. This may cause difficulties claiming child support for the puppies ;) the female dog is a poodle but I'm but sure which breeds the males were. Neighbour isn't happy about the not knowing the fathers breed either, but it seems a simple dog walk has turned into a huge saga!

Squeeky - we do need Jeremy Kyle, DNA tests may be an option but the possible fathers have scarpered!

ChaoticismyLife · 04/08/2012 16:29

YANBU If the owner doesn't want her dog to get pregnant then she should have her spayed.

Tell her she can walk her herself in future.

McHappyPants2012 · 04/08/2012 16:30

She should of told you the dog was on heat or had her sterilised.

SparklingGoldMedals · 04/08/2012 16:31

Yes, that's true saint. If it was a pedigree/show dog you wouldn't want it mating down the park with any old mongrel though would you? Confused

JumpingThroughHoops · 04/08/2012 16:34

They still sell pedigree cross breeds in the local paper etc - I love the adverts, but it is still a mongrel, and if people are prepared to pay 4 or 5 hundred pounds for a mutt, well they are mad.
