Magpies are unlucky because they are dragons in disguise. In these days of reason and logic we have lost our belief in magic, and we no longer see magical and mythical beings such as dragons, trolls, wizards and ogres. But they still exist- it is our modern minds that fail to recognise them for what they are. Our modern logic tells us that the dinosaurs and giant lizards evolved into birds, so what better disguise for a fire breathing giant lizard that had a peculiar liking for shiny jewels and gold than to dissemble as a harmless looking bird? We still carry an instinctual recognition of them, and perform our rituals to protect ourselves whenever we see one, and they still cannot repress their dragonish fascination for shiny treasure and dramatic colouring.

Magpies aren't unlucky, they are just lazy and drink too much.
