and neither is a 48" chest?

Having tripped to the hell that is Blue Water, only to find M&S don't stock above a 46" and I had to come home.

All my 16yos friends are that height and rugby playing build with thighs like tree trunks. Surely it's not that unusual?

Couldnt get any jeans either, "skinny" seems to be vogue, he'd look ridiculous in a pair of those.

Wouldn't you think stores stock for local demand seeing as they will all be madly scrabbling for suits for 6th form round about now?

Zippylovesgeorge · 02/08/2012 17:29

Luckily no suits needed for 6th form here. However I know the struggle to get XLong jeans/trousers for a gangly teen - doesn't help they start at a 34" waist - good job he's happy to wear a belt!! Least with skinny fits it means he doesn't have too much spare fabric!!

A colleague at school is 6ft 6 and can only wear shirt sleeves rolled up as his arms are too long, and it's a nightmare to get longer ones. He is also always coming untucked when he stretches, so we are always reminding him to get dressed ;-)

CanISawItOff · 02/08/2012 17:33

YABUish my brother is 6'5 and as skinny as a rake and as such has no problems finding clothes. DP, however, is 5'8 and built like the proverbial outhouse due to playing rugby, trying to find t'shirts and jeans that come in short arse length or broad shoulders is nigh on impossible. I think it's the breadth that's the issue not the length with mens clothing.

ShatnersBassoon · 02/08/2012 17:33

6'4" is quite a lot taller than average (I think 5'9" is average for a British man), and 48" chest is also very large, probably XXL.

You'll probably have more luck in a Big & Tall type shop, rather than high street.

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 17:33

He looked at me in horror and said "I haven't stopped growing yet have I? Christ! I'm going to have a to pay a fortune for bespoke suits aren't I?"

Bue · 02/08/2012 17:34

It's still pretty darn tall. My ex bf was 6'5" and he was always, always the tallest person around. I can only think of one teenager I know who even approaches that height.

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 17:34

M&S do "Big Man" online, hence me being a bit miffed I had to come home, order o nline, given the choice of store pick up or delivery. Surely they could have ordered in store for me, when I'm standing there holding the damned thing, and just need a size bigger?

OP posts:
IslaValargeone · 02/08/2012 17:35

It's not that common surely.
I never meet tall men, have struggled to date anyone over 6 feet unfortunately.

valiumredhead · 02/08/2012 17:36

I think 6.4 is pretty tall. I am really tall and there's few men I look up to tbh.

TangoSierra · 02/08/2012 17:36

ds - aged 15 is 6 foot 3 he will prob make 6'6" in the end.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 02/08/2012 17:37

YANBU. My 16 YO brother is about 6ft2 and is a chunky build, Although i know others his size, My mum has had hell the last two years getting his school uniform.

forevergreek · 02/08/2012 17:37

Debenhams. Oh brought a few shirts in there ( jeff bank range) just last night. He is 6'3 and he didn't et anywhere near largest on offer. Think 16 and 1/2 neck? Not sure what chest size that was but length wise good, also has broad shoulders and fit arms fine. He's prob a size m generally apart from arm length

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 17:38

Perhaps it's an area thing? The gene pool is gangly round these parts? A throw back to part-man-part urang-utang? Grin

DH, BIL and FIL are all 6'3". They don't seem that tall to me, I have a lot of male friends who are 6' and taller. They all seem to find clothes to fit them, including suits. YANBU.

Actually, I'm 5'5" and seem pretty short in comparison with most of my female friends. It must be where I live.

auntevil · 02/08/2012 17:48

The men (and women except me) in this family struggle with leg length more than anything. Why can shops not understand that a 33" leg is not particularly long, just a normal averagely tall man. Long is a 36" at least - surely?
I'm saying this as I see my SIL struggle with her 10 year old finding trousers for primary school for his waist and slim build in a 31" leg

MrsSippy · 02/08/2012 17:49

my ds1 is 6'9'' and is quite skinny and ds2 is 6'4'' but is of the chunky variety. I find that in these extreme cases (and yes, I would say that 6' 4'' is still quite unusual) it all comes down to body parts and brands.

ds1, although silly-tall is all upper body, he can quite easily fit in 34'' inside leg trousers, although some brands are better than others for this (Diesel jeans for example) He has the same length trousers as ds2, who has more trouble because of his 'rugby player' thighs.

Shirts on the other hand are a bloody nightmare, and ds1 often looks quite 'saggy' as he buys a massive collar size to get a longer body and sleeve length, I now just run a new seam down the side and stick a couple of darts in the back to get rid of some of the extra material.

When it came to suits, we used an alteration service in town to add a false hem onto the sleeve of his jackets and that was OK.

Good luck tho', I feel your pain!

RunYouBastardRun · 02/08/2012 17:52

Dh is 6'4 and seems to be fairly average. My ex was 6'8 and was tall

SoleSource · 02/08/2012 17:54

Gap can order extra length jeans and shirts from USA. Just ask the manager in the store. I used to do this for my 6'4 ex.

Katienana · 02/08/2012 18:07

Dh is 6'4" and gets most of his stuff from h&m as they are scandi so cut for tall people. He recently got a bespoke suit and tailor said he had longest arms he'd ever seen.

quoteunquote · 02/08/2012 18:17

6'4 is small in this house,

Next is doing a 36" inside leg jean at the moment with a good cut, DH came home with all they had in stock, he now has to stop the DSs nicking them,

those who are tall should save their pennies and have a weekend break in holland, as the dutch are the tallest race on earth, and it's worth stocking up when you are there,

high and mighty are rubbish, as they assume you must go out on the girth as well as up, old man clothes,

You can get great shirts, if you bend in half and run your eye along the bottom of the shirts at TKmax, they seem to get the end of line, tailored shirts XXXL,

DH also managed to grab a couple of generous shirts in the sea salt sale,

If anyone knows where you can get good quality long plain T-shirts, please please share.

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 18:20

Sports Direct are doing a good line of plain slazenger round neck T-shirts at the mo - 2 for a fiver, they go up to 4XL - they are very long (we get 2 XL for room) they are cut quite large as well

I also go to european (german, dutch - also French (thought they had a smaller average height than the UK) shops to get my DSs school uniform and trousers. They don't equate needing a longer leg with having a wider waist.
I thought that the average height of men in the UK was 5'10"? and that figure hadn't changed much since the 50s?
