to think that 6'4" isn't unusually tall these days?

and neither is a 48" chest?

Having tripped to the hell that is Blue Water, only to find M&S don't stock above a 46" and I had to come home.

All my 16yos friends are that height and rugby playing build with thighs like tree trunks. Surely it's not that unusual?

Couldnt get any jeans either, "skinny" seems to be vogue, he'd look ridiculous in a pair of those.

Wouldn't you think stores stock for local demand seeing as they will all be madly scrabbling for suits for 6th form round about now?

Assuming people are correct with their 5' 9"/5'10" averages, 6' 4" is still very tall. Not unusual, turn around and stare tall, but tall enough that if someone was asked to describe them 'tall' would be the first word they'd go for.

Lots of people think I'm tiny, at 5'2", but I'm much closer to average than a 6'4" man.

TruthSweet · 02/08/2012 18:36

I seem to think men under 6' are short (my DB is 5' 10" and I think of him as being rather small for a man!) but then DH is 6' 2" and his friends/work colleagues have all been his height or much taller - must be something about IT Confused

DH has to get the 2" longer shirts from M&S if he wants long sleeves but I normally get his short sleeve shirts in Primark as they last for ever and they don't need ironing. They don't come untucked either even though they aren't extra long (he has 17" or 17 1/2" neck shirts as then they seem to be long enough, 16 1/2" is just too short even though it fits fine width wise).

High & Mighty apparently do good suiting though DH had major issues trying to get a suit a few years back as they were either wide or tall not wide-ish and tall-ish. M&S came to the rescue and it fitted perfectly (I think his chest is 44" though).

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 18:43

Tall families, both sides, hasn't been a man under 6'2" in 3 generations, nor a woman under 5'10"; even my 11yo is 5'4" - and I'm thinking help! he's going to sprout another 12 inches in the next 5 years as well if he's like the other two.

I have a friend who is 6'9" and that is OhMiGod tall!

You made me google now! Average European height has steadily increased and males continue to grow until they are 20. Whereas average USA height is static, mainly due to immigration squewing the averages.

I think that the average seems to be where we have a difficulty. Different ethnicities have distinct averages within their own ethnicity - asian are slighter in build, anglo men with a shorter leg to trunk ratio, nordic with the reverse, etc etc - how can a nation as diverse as ours find 'average' when its people are distinctly 'not'

was at dd2s school prize giving in june most of the 14/15 yr old boys were well over 6ft already I feel sorry for their mothers I have a petite 5ft 1 girl, dd1 boyfriend is 6ft 6 I dont think it is that unusual,

quoteunquote · 02/08/2012 20:46

My eldest son's girlfriend is now shorter than our eight year old, she's tiny next to him, but they really suit each other,

All the men in this household duck to get through doorways, and frequently get hit in the head buy those dangly signs supermarkets and hospitals are so fond of,

Jumpingthroughhoops do they have logos on them?

but thanks, I will follow that one up,

If anyone wants to make money, go and have a look at how much XXXL long shirts go for on ebay, there is always a bun fight for anything decent.

some of our of the basketball teamfriends go out to Cambodia and have suits, shirts and clothes made for very low prices, I'm starting to think the holiday would pay for its self,

The USA is brilliant, and you don't pay a premium for long clothes, but it always cost so much to import from there.

Slaters are the best for men's larger sizes, they do extra length etc. They also alter clothes free of charge when you purchase them. Fantastic service, brilliant company. The are also online if there isn't a store near to you.
Had some great jeans etc for DH from there, good quality and just £12 in the sale.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/08/2012 21:03

I think 5'11 is average in my generation (20s), so 6'4 is still relatively unusual, but not totally ridiculously tall.

I agree, bigger sizes are stupidly hard to find.

lastnerve · 02/08/2012 21:32

its taller than average but I think it depends on what you're used to,

I'm 5'9 my sister is 5'8 my dad was 6'3 and my DP is 6'5 a man at 5'10 would appear quite short to me.

quoteunquote · 02/08/2012 21:50

When I was stuck in hospital for months, the majority of my nurses were really small the tallest was 5'1,quite a few were irish.

I really started to feel like a giant, it was a relief to get home where I at 5'10, I'm the short arse, buy at least a foot.

nikcname · 02/08/2012 21:51

DS1 was 6'2 on 15 birthday, however he is now nearly 16 and from the way I have to buy trousers is much taller.
Last week I managed to get age 16.5 + extra length for trousers from M&S:
age 16 shirts fine. Biggest jumper they do is 15-16 he tried it on and it would struggle to fit the cat! Why would they do a shirt so much bigger than the jumper?
Did my M&S shopping online but if I have to redo it with another company then sending the whole lot back and trying again is worth the P&P saving.

Ideas where?

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 22:19

Oddly, shirts are never a problem, have no idea why as I can't ever tuck mine in. I guess they skimp on material for woman.

I found Matalan do a brill range of shirts; well made, they do one particular style at £14 where the button holes are in a different colour thread and the inside of the cuff and collar are lines in that colour also.

my brother is 6' 4'' and he always seems to use Burton's and slater's, that said he is 40 so maybe not a 16 year old's idea of cool.

i6' 4" is tall, I work in a male dominated workplace 90% and I tower above some of the men and I am only 5' 8", a lot are about my height or a couple of inches taller, amongst my dept the tallest man is 6' 1" and the shortest an inch shorter than me, the other 3, 1 my height, 1 5' 11" and the other 6 ' 0" we are a 50/50 dept so 5 men 5 women, I am the tallest woman the shortest is 5' 1" the other 3 are all 5' 3". I know these said facts because every time we get a new piece of fitness or medical equipment we all play with it and a lot need our height and weight to be meaningful.

On another note, I am the manager of my dept, and as I look up to my line manager she is about 5' 11" and her boss I would say is over 6' and she is the leader of our organisation, I think I read somewhere that tall women where more likely to succeed in business?

LilBlondePessimist · 02/08/2012 23:32

My brothers who are 20 & 2 are both 6'4", and one of dh's best mates is 6'8". At 5'3.5", the make me feel extremely small. My brothers are a bit different though - one is just under 10stone and can only wear emo, skinny clothes (which thankfully he likes), and the other is over 13 stone!
