To expect to bloody well be paid?

Started working for a company on 1st June. Payment is a month in hand so I should have been paid on Tuesday for June's work. My payment hasn't gone in my bank though, I've contacted the payroll department and apparently there is an error with the system, but they can only do one bulk payment transfer per month so I will have to wait until the end of this month to get payment. So that means working for 3 months, including paying for childcare albeit not much, with no wages whatsoever.

I am so so angry

Sounds like they're trouble (and in trouble too). Get what's owing to you and get out. If they can do it once......

Rowgtfc72 · 02/08/2012 18:09

I work for a small company who have messed up my wages twice in seven years. We were offered cash the same day or money in bank next day. Sounds a bit iffy.

plutocrap · 02/08/2012 18:11

Have you spoken to your colleagues about this, OP?

MammaTJ · 02/08/2012 18:20

The lovely company I work for pay us bang on time. The staff can also get hold of the manager at any time of the month and ask for a sub and they put it in to our accounts within half an hour. Your wages can and should be paid to you.

Icelollycraving · 02/08/2012 18:29

Are you on the isle of wight?!

AuntLucyInPeru · 02/08/2012 18:32

Whoa. I would be very worried that they are about to go under and you have just worked a month for free. Staff ALWAYS get paid on time unless finances are irretrievably bad...Sad

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/08/2012 18:56

" Payment is a month in hand "
I have never heard of this before. They do sound very dodgy. Do you have a contract of employment in writing?

HecateHarshPants · 02/08/2012 19:06

I have never heard of a month in hand before! So two full month's work done before you get any pay? Bloody hell.

I know a week in hand is often done, but I didn't think a month in hand was. It's not very fair, is it.

Icelollycraving · 02/08/2012 19:52

I have heard of it but it's rare. I think I know the company although I may be wrong.

MrsPnut · 02/08/2012 19:57

The only way you would have to wait more than a month for your wages is when you have started after the payroll cut off date.

I would tell them that you are taking legal advice regarding breach of contract and you expect a bank transfer to pay you your outstanding wages.

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 20:15

They can pay you, by cheque, cash or bank transfer. You need to kick up a fuss. If they had any business sense they would not want to lose a trained employee. Are you a member of a union. I believe USDAW is for retail get some advice asap.

In my company it is a month in lieu. So if I started on the 17th of July I would not get paid until the 31st August.

solidgoldbrass · 02/08/2012 20:26

Are you an employee or a freelance? If you are an employee, they are breaking the law and you can shop them to everyone in sight.
If you are a freelance, unfortunately, it's going to be more difficult. (I have had a lot of this sort of crap as a freelance; the threat of legal action usually makes them pay but it's almost always the end of working for them.)

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/08/2012 20:28

notsofrownieface, but wouldn't the pay you get on 31st August be for the hours you had worked all the way up to 31st August? And then on 30th Sept you'd be paid for 1st to 30th Sept?

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 20:37

WhereYouLeftIt

Not necessarily, if started my job on the 17th July, I would not get paid until the end of August.

The august pay would contain any overtime from the 15th July July to 15th August plus a full months pay, so 1st-31st August.

The 'normal' pay from July would be banked until completion of a probationary period, or the last payday if the probationary period is not passed.

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 20:45

And in my previous posts I mean arrears not lieu. Too much Wine.

chickydoo · 02/08/2012 20:46

I've not been paid for June either. I am freelance, but work for the same company every month. I should have been paid on 30th of the month but nothing so far.
I have asked for my wages but had no response.
Op I really understand where you are coming from. It's very bad practice.

squeakytoy · 02/08/2012 20:47

If the payroll is done by an outsourced company (which is very common nowadays) and you are a mid month starter, it is quite normal for you to miss the first payrun at the end of that month, however every company I have worked for would offer the employee an advance, which would be deducted from their pay in the following month.

IE, start mid June, first pay would be end of July, which would be for all the hours worked since starting, less whatever advance was given.

That is the usual procedure. Only mistakes would normally account for someone not getting their first pay until the August payrun.

GhostShip · 02/08/2012 20:47

That's shocking. I'd be ready for ripping heads off.

Name and shame!

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 20:58

If you started on the 1st June you should have had some money at the end of June, even if it was 2 weeks pay. If you still have not received any payments at the end of July then I would be causing merry hell.

Have you had a payslip op?

squeakytoy · 02/08/2012 21:00

You cant get a payslip if you havent been paid.

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 21:03

The op should be receiving payslips even if it does say 0.

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 21:07

op here

squeakytoy · 02/08/2012 21:08

You can only recieve a payslip if your details have been entered onto the payroll system as a live employee. Otherwise you will not receive a payslip, with zero on it, or anything else!

notsofrownieface · 02/08/2012 21:15

The op should still receive payslips. OP cause merry hell tomorrow. Grin
