To expect to bloody well be paid?

Started working for a company on 1st June. Payment is a month in hand so I should have been paid on Tuesday for June's work. My payment hasn't gone in my bank though, I've contacted the payroll department and apparently there is an error with the system, but they can only do one bulk payment transfer per month so I will have to wait until the end of this month to get payment. So that means working for 3 months, including paying for childcare albeit not much, with no wages whatsoever.

I am so so angry

dodgy, not dosgy!
deducted, not decucted!

On a real keyboard here, too, so no blaming a phone! Blush

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 14:52

That is shockingly disrespectful. Whether you have savings or not is hardly the point, you shouldn't have to cover for their error at your own inconvenience when simple solutions are available.

If this is their take on matters it is unlikely to be the last time you come a cropper for their unprofessionalism and to be re-thinking your position is sensible in light of that.

I would be furious too.

Cocacolalight · 02/08/2012 14:53

Such a shame as I really enjoy the job. I feel a bit gutted really but there's no way I am willing to risk losing a third month's pay too.

How dare they say that re savings.

Do they not live in the real world?

Arseholes. I wouldn't go back. It is a good thing they are not leaving you in a financial stew though.

Shocking. I hope you get it sorted.
I think CHAPS payments are the one off payments they can do. My company paid me this way last month when they charged me £700 too much for my childcare salary sacrifice. Got money back within 24 hours

LoveHandles88 · 02/08/2012 15:00

You can make them right you a cheque or pay you cash. If you request your pay by cash you have to give them 'reasonable time' for them to obtain it. This is what I have always been told, and my last company did just that.

thebody · 02/08/2012 15:02

Awful for you op, this isn't on.. General advice, never be a child minder as this happens all the bloody time...

Want2bSupermum · 02/08/2012 15:04

I would tell the guy that I do have savings but they are not there to provide your company with cash flow. I need to be paid so I can pay my bills. Give them until tomorrow close of business to pay you. If you don't have a cheque in your hand or money in your bank account then don't come in on Monday until they pay you.

BlueMoon74 · 02/08/2012 15:06

Agree with squeakytoy

StuntGirl · 02/08/2012 15:07

Sounds awful OP.

I would raise it with manager > payroll > HR > boss of the company. If they keep telling you they can't pay you tell them you're going to have to take legal advice over it unless you're paid (and then do exactly that). Bloody awful, they sound dodgy as fuck.

BreconBeBuggered · 02/08/2012 15:15

I still don't get why you weren't paid for June's work at the end of June, never mind July. I've never come across this before, and DH and I have had a number of different employers. They sound like cheeky, useless feckers.

Cocacolalight · 02/08/2012 15:19

It's very cheeky of them. I thought when I started working for them that it was a different system to the norm, but I suppose I just accepted it as I wanted the job

OP posts:
MrsKeithRichards · 02/08/2012 15:21

I'd be worried. There are plenty of options available to them, chaps, bacs, cheque and good old cash.

Cocacolalight · 02/08/2012 15:23

The summer is their busiest time of year as we are in an area popular with holidaymakers and tourists. I'm wondering now if they just wanted free labour for the summer holiday

name and shame?

poorbuthappy · 02/08/2012 15:24

obv only if you decide not to go back. But then I suppose you risk payment that way too.

Tee2072 · 02/08/2012 15:29

Definitely don't go back and tell them why. Then ring a solicitor and see what your options are.

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 02/08/2012 15:30

What bastards Angry

MrsKeithRichards · 02/08/2012 15:33

I'd tell them you're giving them until close of business tomorrow then seeking legal advice.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 02/08/2012 15:42

This is not on.

Don't go back to work until they sort it. They can at least give you a cheque in lieu of wages if they have some pay roll run problems.

Phone ACAS for advice.

Speak to a solicitor.

I'm sorry but I agree that it's unlikely that they are committing to employing you for a long period if this is how shoddily you are treated.

Familyguyfan · 02/08/2012 16:17

They can do you a CHAPS payment up to 3pm I believe, although it might be a big earlier. They will, however, have to pay extra for this facility, hence why they don't want to! Make them! I have known people almost camp out in HR to make payments happen.

plutocrap · 02/08/2012 17:36

I only pay £25 for CHAPS payments from my personal accounts (2 separate banks, so probably fairly standard).

HecateHarshPants · 02/08/2012 17:47

name and shame!

Spuddybean · 02/08/2012 17:56

Some companies do pay one month in arrears so it is relatively normal (but not common) to get Junes payment at the end July. However, despite doing monthly pay runs, if it is the employers error they absolutely can do a same day payment or BACS (takes about 4 working days). At my company a SDP is about £11 and a BACs is about £8 - Which we would swallow as it was our fault.

What was the reason they didn't pay you?
