To think that although Aldi and Lidl fruit and veg is good, the meat is often of a really poor quality

I've been put off from buying meat/fish from Aldi and Lidl as I've had a few bad experiences (horrid tasting tuna steaks (frozen) and rank tasting steak). Chicken and other meat is so expensive in most supermarkets. I'd like to give the cheaper supermarkets another chance. What do you guys think about the meat/fish from these places?

I ? aldi

Lidl are also great for dishwasher tabs, foil, cling film, sandwich bags, bin bags, sponge cloths ie all the stuff that I hate to spend loads on.

Plus their wine is always very good and very reasonably priced.

I do the bulk of our shop there now.

Lidl nappies are good, I have only just discovered them as my final DC nears potty training age. I have tried boots, huggies and sainsbos in the past and been really disappointed so have stick with Pampers as they never seem to leak (I know other people find the opposite!). I have been using Lidl for a couple of months now and they are fine. As ate the wipes which are about 80p. Even when our financial situation improves I will stick with lidl for those, Greek yoghurt, mince and free range chicken. I find the veg to be better than supermarkets (except my beloved waitrose). But nowhere beats my local greengrocer stall for quality or price Smile

Yep Lidl nappies are good. All you Aldi lovers out there...I tried the frozen chicken pieces (on special offer and a darn sight cheaper than anywhere else) and they were very nice! Thanks for all the good advice, my supermarket meat snobbery is quickly fading!!

I switched to Lidl (from M&S and Tesco) for most of the main shop a few years ago. Save about £30plus per week. I have found Lidl fresh chicken and boneless breast fillets great....not watery. Also good sell by dates on most things. Basmati rice, olive oil, tinned toms, fresh toms, peppers, chinese garlic( in woven baskets) is fab,(Mushrooms are sometimes horrid...so i dont buy), yellow fin sole fillets frozen...we all love., pasta fine, flours, free range eggs, spreadable butter, their own olive spread, jam, marmalade, bleach, washing up liquid...the white one, fresh orange from conc. is fine, yogs ,cheese, white zinfandel, all great... baby wipes are the best ive ever tried and about 85p. Some of their own toasting bread ??? but...there is a fresh bakery in our Lidl and hot crusty bread is nice. they also do a frozen indian range which is good. Tinned fruit ie peaches and pineapple are great.

Bread flour n yeast are great, naan breads, english muffins great too.
hope this is of use

I've liked the meat I've bought from lidl, with the one exception of some steak which was tough and chewy.

Chicken, pork and steak mince has been good.

Ikeameatballs · 21/07/2013 13:31

I have started to go to Lidl and an Aldi was opened pretty nearby last week. Made the mistake of going to the Aldi on opening day, luckily I went straight after school run but by the time I left there was a guy in the road doing a one in one out thing as the car park was jammed!

I'm veggie so rarely buy meat but the dc like the cooked meats from both Aldi and Lidl. The tinned stuff eg chickpeas, tomatoes etc are excellent from Lidl. Limited choice on yoghurts in my Lidl, Aldi better. Good juice cartons at Lidl for packed lunches. Think you have to be picky on the freh produce, the broccoli at Aldi was already yellowing on display but everything else has been fine. I've found cleaning products to be good and I'm using Lidl Cien moisturiser and it's lovely.

sazzle82 · 21/07/2013 13:31

I find the meat in Lidl fine, I don't have a local Aldi so only occasionally shop there, but find that fine too.

I sometimes find the fruit and veg can go off quicker than stuff from tesco, and there isn't as much choice, but generally I can get most of what I need there, and I save roughly £20 per week doing so.

Mumsyblouse · 21/07/2013 13:34

The best thing about the meat in Lidl is that it doesn't pour with water/white substance like Co-op meat for example, which is the worst out of all the supermarkets.

weebarra · 21/07/2013 13:42

I think the meat in lidl is fine. Here it seems to be mainly Scottish bred. Don't see any difference between it and tesco tbh.

HouseAtreides · 21/07/2013 13:45

Co-Op promote the fact that their whole chickens are all British, but in their sandwiches/ready meals etc the chicken is from Thailand!

starsandunicorns · 21/07/2013 13:51

Love lidl the meat is brill

primroseyellow · 21/07/2013 13:52

We find ALdi steaks very good (eg fillet, ribeye, sirloin) but not especially cheap.

BackforGood · 21/07/2013 14:00

I don't have a Lidl close enough to use, but shop in Aldi 4 weeks out of 5 and have never had a problem with any of the meat unlike in Sainsburys where I used to shop. Never tried any frozen meat though (except burgers). So I regularly buy all our meals from Aldi and have never had a problem.
We save SO much money by shopping there and not Sainsburys.

JADS · 21/07/2013 14:01

Lidl do these chipolata sausages which are something like 90% meat. They are good. The steak mince is also really tasty.

HollyBerryBush · 21/07/2013 14:37

Don't like Aldi (much), nothing wrong with Lidl - personally I find the meat better quality than the supermarket. Never had any of the fruit and veg go off after 2 days either.

poopyisapig · 21/07/2013 14:40

I like the meat.

Dh and and I both low carb, so need lots of meat and being a bit poor, Lidl is where we shop.

I really, really like thier pork. Much nicer than pork from telco/sainsburys

MrsKeithRichards · 21/07/2013 14:45

Aldi is Which supermarket of the year again this year.

SilverOldie · 21/07/2013 14:53

Is any of the meat from either supermarket free range? If so may give it a try.

melmo26 · 21/07/2013 15:04

We recently swapped to aldi and love it. We buy fresh chicken, mince, sausage, black pudding and they all taste great. Their streaky bacon is really nice.
We buy all our shop from there except a few items ie wipes nappies baby milk.

We have saved at least 50 a week on shopping. And that includes buying things like chocolate, crisps etc.

ProfYaffle · 21/07/2013 15:09

I find the fresh British meat in Lidl is fine. Quite a lot of the frozen meat is disappointing but the frozen fish is good.

PandaG · 21/07/2013 15:11

silveroldie

Aldi do free range chickens (whole) for a fiver. Also do free range chicken breasts.

SHarri13 · 21/07/2013 15:24

I kind of agree OP. We use ocado for meat and branded stuff and lidl/ aldi for fruit and veg.

I used to dislike lidl but one has opened on our high street that has changed my mind. It has fresh Danish pastries for 40p and they're good.

mrsdinklage · 21/07/2013 15:26

Aldi sells Red Tractor meat - we love it Smile

HouseAtreides · 21/07/2013 16:35

Melmo, if you haven't tried them, Aldi nappies are excellent, as are Lidl's.
