To think that although Aldi and Lidl fruit and veg is good, the meat is often of a really poor quality

I've been put off from buying meat/fish from Aldi and Lidl as I've had a few bad experiences (horrid tasting tuna steaks (frozen) and rank tasting steak). Chicken and other meat is so expensive in most supermarkets. I'd like to give the cheaper supermarkets another chance. What do you guys think about the meat/fish from these places?

I bought a lovely avacado from aldi, it was lovely, much nicer than the ones I buy from tescos

Not been brave enough to buy the meat though!

BillyBollyBandy · 02/08/2012 14:36

Aldi do great frozen lamb shanks and frozen scampi. Their chicken is fine, and they do lean mince. Not keen on their steaks though, very tough. Really like their selection of cooked meat too.

Don't like Lidl at all, I don't think any of it is good quality

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2012 14:37

Although I love lidl, only some of the fruit is good. I never buy apples from there, as when I do, they're always covered in bruises

GetOrfMoiRing · 02/08/2012 14:38

I bought some kangaroo from Lidl the other day - so I will see when I try that (fuck knows what kangaroo is supposed to taste like however).

I rarely buy meat from Lidl however apart from steak mince, which is fine.

ThymeLord · 02/08/2012 14:41

I actually find Lidl fruit n veg is poor quality. Doesn't last two seconds. Their lean mince and pork is good.

Shelly32 · 02/08/2012 14:43

Ohhh, i think i'll continue to do the 3 packs of chicken for £10 in Morrison's then.. and maybe give the mince a chance

Lidl chicken breasts are good. £6.99 for a kilo - I buy regularly. Also their salmon fillets.

Fruit and veg - I have found their pineapples, melons, bananas, lemons, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, garlic to be great quality.

Plus they do loads of other good stuff better than other supermarkets eg frozen scampi, olive oil, fruit juices, washing liquid, air fresheners...

SamWidges (great name!) is right about the other products at Lidl being brill! Their laundry liquid is ridiculously cheap and just as good as the top brands and their cleaning wipes are great too!

Life would be easier if there was a 'Like' button on here!

We are thinking about starting shopping there rather than at Tesco or Morrisons. Overall do you think the products (except the meat) are good quality and quite a bit cheaper? Just looking for ways to cut down our monthly spend as we seem to spend a crazy amount on groceries... TIA (and sorry for hijacking the thread!)

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/08/2012 14:54

I'm loving the Lacura face cream range at the moment....using the double lift at the moment and it is lush!!!

BupcakesandCunting · 02/08/2012 14:56

I always find the meat to be fine and the fruit and veg to be VILE.

BupcakesandCunting · 02/08/2012 14:56

I bit into a Aldi apple the other week and it was exactly like biting into a ball of wool.

Shelly32 · 02/08/2012 14:57

S'okay Ethelred The reason I asked was to try and cut down on my bills too. Hopefully answers to you will help me too Smile
I think it's Aldi that do this but following on from Betty they do a Syn Ake serum that is as apparently good as Botox but without the injections! I ve used it and it's good. Only £4.99 too!

I find it the other way round actually, I don't rate the fruit at Lidl at all, it is always a bit soft. Some stuff like avocados, cucumbers are fine.

The meat is fine, tastes the same to me.

anklebitersmum · 02/08/2012 15:10

The meat in Lidl is mainly British and the chickens are much cheaper per kg than the 3 water-filled ones you buy for a tenner elsewhere. The fact that they're all different weights says a lot in my opinion I mean, since when are all chickens the same size? Hmm

It's true you have to watch some of the produce but then I find that's the same in any supermarket to be honest.

We do a large percentage of our shopping at Lidl and find it excellent value and quality-but we do tend to cook from scratch so fresh veg is bought 3 or 4 times a week. I also buy in big bulk when there's a good offer on (especially if it freezes/keeps well). Extra mature organic cheddar at under a fiver a kg? Whole 5kg block is going home with me Blush

If you want to cut down on grocery costs just start looking at the per kg prices of chicken, beef, pork, cheese, good quality sausage and shop where they're cheapest (or on offer). For example have you seen how much range per kg one of those 'they're all £5' chicken costs in Morrisons? Have a shufty next time you're in there-all different sizes and very different prices!

Nothing wrong with being a 'supermarket whore' Grin

Oh and I'll do online delivery when it's cheaper than driving the car there and back too

WildWorld2004 · 02/08/2012 16:30

Iv never had a problem with either fruit/meat at lidl or aldi. I find other bigger named supermarket meat poor quality. Sometimes it is just personal choice, everyone likes different things.

Wigglewoo · 02/08/2012 16:36

I'm not brave enough to buy fresh meat from aldi - always looks a bit mangled in my one! But the thai salmon fish cakes are lurrrrvely - well worth a go (frozen).

On a side note I adore aldi washing powder and fabric softener - I stock up on it loads and loads when I go there... Aldi is 18 miles away from me.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 02/08/2012 17:38

I've found it's the opposite OP, the meat from Aldi has always been fine, their cooked and frozen meats always been really good but the fruit and veg is generally manky within a day or two of buying, the only fruit thats been ok has been grapes.
I refuse to buy their peppers anymore as whenever I have, Ive opened the pack (usually that evening or the next day) and there are always soft spots where they are starting to rot Confused

I find Aldi great for cereals, breads/pastries, meat (fresh and cooked), tinned tuna, sweets/chocolates and cleaning products, their Almat gel is brilliant. Lacura day face cream is also lovely.

JumpingThroughHoops · 02/08/2012 18:26

Nothing wrong with the meat in Lidl.

auntpetunia · 02/08/2012 20:08

All meat from Aldi has always been great, the beef joints are Fab not pumped with water so don't loose shape or shrink, and are lovely and tender.

WelshMaenad · 02/08/2012 20:23

I'm not a fan of lidl produce OR meat tbh. Some also fruit/veg is fine.

I've recently starting getting all my fruit/veg from the greengrocers at my local Market and meat from a local butcher. I am saving ridiculous amounts of money and the quality (ESP of meat) is far superior to supermarket stuff. I had the most gorgeous plums on Tuesday, I ate them all in one evening Blush

WelshMaenad · 02/08/2012 20:24

ALDI not also!

Lidl washing up liquid is fricking amazing.

rhondajean · 02/08/2012 20:27

I've actually started buying meat and veg from my local farm shop and I. Actually saving money too. Two large onions for 40p and they taste fantastic! Chicken is the same price per kilo - and you know which farms all the meat comes from too.
