Names with strange spellings

Dolcelatte · 01/08/2012 21:52

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

Personally, I think that people giving their kids a name that they then change the spelling of is not individual, but tacky..

JumpingThroughHoops · 01/08/2012 21:55

They are mainstream spellings.

I always have difficulty with Rachel - to me it is Rachael.

Aimee et do my head in, it's just left over scrabble letters.

Nahnahnahnahbatman · 01/08/2012 21:58

This is a strange one:

www.snopes.com/racial/language/le-a.asp

She gave her daughter the name le-a (pronounced Ledasha). Made me chuckle. I don't know whether or not it is UR as it is down to personal taste. I wouldn't give my kids confusing names though.

iklboo · 01/08/2012 21:59

I know a Ribekkah.

WorraLiberty · 01/08/2012 22:03

I know a Tarnya

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 22:04

I have worked (youth worker) with a Dayzee (Daisy) and a Brit-nee (Britney)

HugeMedalTally · 01/08/2012 22:07

My name has an unusual spelling. It is a family spelling - it was my great grandmother's name, and my mother's middle name.

It's such a pain, because I have to spell my (very normal) name out to people all the time.

BTW, I think that Le-a one is an urban myth.

DoIgetastickerforthat · 01/08/2012 22:17

I've always wondered what the point is too. If you want your childs name to stand out then give them an unusual name because all you are doing by 'jazzing up' the spelling of a traditional name is sentencing the poor bugger to a lifetime of correcting the spelling. Tis madness I tells ye!

StuntGirl · 01/08/2012 22:24

My name is a less common, but still correct, spelling of a more mainstream name. Nobody ever gets it right and it drives me mad. [sigh] But you just learn to live with it.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/08/2012 22:26

My name is a forrin spelling so nobody gets it right.
Sarah Jayne is hardly unusual though.

Margerykemp · 01/08/2012 22:37

I hate them

All those Jaime's, Lyndzy's, Charley's, Conor's, Kaleb's, Katrina's, Lili's, Mae's, Marc's, Kylee's, Chevonne's, Zoey's, Camryn's,

None of them are going to become high court judges!

squeakytoy · 01/08/2012 22:40

Marc is the correctly shortened version of Marcus isnt it?

workshy · 01/08/2012 22:41

wants desperately to be pedantic but I shall refrain

my DD has a 'y' at the end of her ame rather than an 'ie'

both perfectly acceptable spellings but people always put ie

never even considered it as a problem when we named her

seeker · 01/08/2012 22:42

And all those misplaced apostrophes!

I agree, by the way.

Margey you are using the old high court judge thing in an ironic piss takingway aren't you?

manicinsomniac · 01/08/2012 22:48

But some names just do have more than one spelling

Jane and Jayne are both very accepted, as are Alison, Allison and Allyson.

I'm a Rebecca but I always wanted to be Rebekah for a bit more individuality

Different spellings can often be cool in my opinion but, when they get phonetic or crazy, it's gone too far (eg Mikayla, Dayzee)

My dad is called marc he is in his 50s so not a unusual new spelling. My DD name has a extra n in because it looks better with two ns and I don't care if you think thats tacky. Biscuit

larks35 · 01/08/2012 22:55

YANBU. It often annoys me that the original name gets lost in the re-spelling e.g. Siobhan, I love the name and the spelling of it, but have seen the same name spelt as Shevon or Chevonne. If you are going to give your child a non-english name then spell it as it was originally, not as you pronounce it.

degutastic · 01/08/2012 22:58

My name is the "correct" spelling of a mainstream but not common name, which is normally misspelt. Drive me insane as I always have to correct people.

usualsuspect · 01/08/2012 22:59

YABU and a bit up yourself.

devonsmummy · 01/08/2012 22:59

There's a girl at dd's preschool music class called Feebee Blush

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 01/08/2012 23:01

My son as a name that's not very common but its also spelt differently from the original. Do I care? Not an ounce.

usualsuspect · 01/08/2012 23:04

I pronounce my DSs name wrong according to MN law.

Do I care, err no
