Names with strange spellings

Dolcelatte · 01/08/2012 21:52

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

I have this problem with my 2 DCs. I tried to give them slightly unusual names but with standard spellings to make life easier for them (they have a very common surname so wanted first names to be a bit unique) but people still get the spellings/pronunciation wrong.

It doesn't really bother me but I have friends who go absolutely ballistic when people get the spelling of their DCs nanes wrong!

I do admit that the unnecessary unusual spellings are a bit pointless though.

FeeBee just makes me think she must be a mad groupie of the BeeGees.

louisianablue2000 · 01/08/2012 23:21

Common names have multiple spellings but to the person who thinks Rachel should be spelt Rachael you are wrong, that's the misspelling, probably because people think it should be like Michael.

There is a lovely comment in one of the Jeeves and Wooster books from an aunt about the horribly modern spelling of Kathryn and how common that is. Some of these misspelling will go on to become more standard themselves. None of the OPs examples were particularly bad. The worst example I ever saw of a 'creative' spelling of a standard name was Abbey-Gale. Very classy.

I saw Elaurna on a form the other day. i rang the lady up and it turned out she was called Eleanora!!!

Why would you do that???!!!

StellarforStar · 01/08/2012 23:23

Oi! Louisianablue

That's my name!!!!

I didn't know that spelling it like that was common!

ratspeaker · 01/08/2012 23:24

Margery you do know it should be Marjorie

see! after time names and spellings change, doesn't make them any less personal or mean less

imagine someone had a baby and called them a made up sounding name, loosely based on a music term, you wouldn't expect the child to go far in life, a name like maybe Condoleezza...

NoComet · 01/08/2012 23:24

The DDs have a friend called Rachael. I get it wrong every time as I spent 7 years in the same form as a Rachel.

Cathryn/Catherine/Kathryn/Katherine I've met them all and Jayne/Jane.

And of course there is Isabel/Isobel/isabelle/Izzy/Issie who are just put on this planet to drive you completely mad.

roteelefant · 01/08/2012 23:27

Tomasz is most certainly polish Blackholes my polish grandad would agree.
and I pretty sure lurking ysabella is spanish (Ysabel definatly is)

I'm going away now dread to think of what you would think of my name.

DoesBuggerAll · 01/08/2012 23:28

Marjerykemp - what's wrong with Conor? It's the correct spelling.

Which name do you reckon has the most variations on spelling?

Madison/Madyson/Maddison/Madisson are all ones I know.

Jamie/Jamee/Jayme/Jayime are all ones I know. I wonder if there is actually a singular name that has the most variations?

manicbmc · 01/08/2012 23:29

Just call everyone 'Dave'. Makes life much easier.

Purple2012 · 01/08/2012 23:29

Tomasz is polish, same as lukasz. Both pronounced very similar to Thomas and Lucas.

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 01/08/2012 23:29

Thanks for that Rot, never knew that!

This girls parents are Aussie farmers, but you've given me hope there is a chance they didn't just do something totally bizarre! Grin

peeriebear · 01/08/2012 23:34

The worst one I have ever seen is Geccika for Jessica. I thought it was some awful fad thing but no- her parents spelt it like that. WTF.
My sister had a teenage phase of spelling her -y ended name with an -i. She has long since grown out of it but our dad still signs birthday cards to her Love Daddi :)

Bue · 01/08/2012 23:38

Rachael is NOT a misspelling. It's an old and completely legitimate variation of Rachel. People don't seem to know the difference between variant spellings and kre8tiv spellings.

I think it's massively small minded and petty to get into a flap over this!

I have a very traditional English name which is spelt with one letter different to the norm. I've disliked my name at times in my life, but I've never disliked the spelling of my name as it's always made me stand out, in a good way :) I am the only one who I have met although there are a couple of moderately well known ones sharing my spelling.

My eldest DS also has the non-standard spelling of his name. He has what turned out to be a v popular name in our area for boys his age, but he is the only one with this particular spelling.

GnocchiNineDoors · 01/08/2012 23:49

But some aren't doing it to be awkward, some are actually accepted alternative spellings:
Jane / Jayne
Gemma / Jemma
Allison / Alison / Alyson
Catherine / Katherine

Therefore YABU.

devonsmummy · 01/08/2012 23:52

Just thought of another at ds's school
Abeigh

APlanSoCunning · 01/08/2012 23:57

A terrible one (I think) - Quym, pronounced Kim - but far too open to alternative pronunciations I think Smile

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/08/2012 23:57

My dd is Catherine. We call her Catey. It's traditional In our family, and I refused to call her Katy. If I'd wanted to call her Katy I would have used Katherine!

GodisaDj · 02/08/2012 00:03

lurker The name Lindsey has about 20 different ways to spell it - lindsay, Lindsey, linsey, linsay, Lyndsay, lyndsey, lynsay, Lynsey, Linzi, lynzi, lindzi, lyndzi....adding ie or z or removing the d, too many variations!!

Floggingmolly · 02/08/2012 00:08

Quym Shock. I would never have pronounced that as Kim!

LucieMay · 02/08/2012 00:15

The spelling of my name is incredibly annoying. I wish it was just plain old Lucy. It just gets spelt incorrectly all the time and it's very annoying. Pointless. Don't know what my mum was playing at.
