to think that it's a bit hard for a Scot to set a new ENGLISH record?

Last night Michael Jamieson apparently set a new ENGLISH record in the mens 200m breaststroke, but he's a SCOT - so shouldn't that have been a BRITISH record, rather than an ENGLISH one?

It's always the same :(

Got to be one of my pet hates. Have seen loads of muppets with England flags supporting Team GB. Very annoying.

JumpingThroughHoops · 01/08/2012 18:22

They'd be the muppets who know the Scots and Irish refused to allow football players to compete for GB?

yellowraincoat · 01/08/2012 18:24

Oh, is it only football played at the Olympics?

I see.

Ireland isn't in the UK. Just for your info.

Salmotrutta · 01/08/2012 18:24

Really Jumping - why was there a Scots female football player on the GB women's team then?

And it doesn't alter the point that the OP makes anyway.

yellowraincoat · 01/08/2012 18:26

Good point, Salmotrutta.

And I don't believe this stuff that Scotland didn't "let" their players compete. I'd say it's more to do with the fact that we are simply shite at football.

Ithinkitsjustme · 01/08/2012 18:28

Yellowraincoat - Northern Ireland is part of the UK and I believe that the inhabitants are Irish, but it doesn't have anything to do with the original question anyway.

I heard the BBC commentator say quite firmly that the second swimmer set an English record, but had not equalled the British record, set in the previous heat.

Sure, Northern Ireland are part of the UK. You go tell the loyalists they're Irish!

Sorry, crap typing, on the coal powered PC

The Scottish Football Association, along with their Northern Irish and Welsh counterparts, have taken no direct involvement with Team GB and have made it clear they do not want their players involved for fear of risking their countries' separate identities in world football.

Sport should not be used for politics. Irritates the bejesus outta me.

not sure how Ryan Giggs slipped into the team Hmm

Yy, geegee, that's what I heard - Willis set the English record (because he's English), but Jamieson set the British (and Scottish) record - faster than Willis.

habbibu · 01/08/2012 18:38

Although Willis did have British record for about 2 mins, didn't he?

Ithinkitsjustme · 01/08/2012 18:45

Geegee, the commentator said that Willis WOULD have set a new record but for Jamieson had already done it, and they had changed their tune by the time Willis swam. It was after Jameison won that they said he had set a new English record.

I think the SFA were right to do what they did - the didn't ban players from putting ther names forward to play for Team GB they just didnt want direct involvement die to the fact that FIFA are a bunch of Twunts and would just then use that against them and force a merger which would effective wipe out the SFA

SoleSource · 01/08/2012 19:19

So what.

cocoachannel · 01/08/2012 19:28

I am sure they made it quite clear that Willis broke the English record in the heats, Jamieson the British and that Willis's time was faster than the previous British record so if semis had been the other way round Wilkis would have held the British for a few minutes. Certainly no mention of Jamieson holding the English record!?
