to think that it's a bit hard for a Scot to set a new ENGLISH record?

Last night Michael Jamieson apparently set a new ENGLISH record in the mens 200m breaststroke, but he's a SCOT - so shouldn't that have been a BRITISH record, rather than an ENGLISH one?

And there he goes breaking the British record again Grin

Ithinkitsjustme · 01/08/2012 19:37

Grin Silver medal - well done Jamieson

I heard that the commentators said that Willis would have set a new GB record, but that Jamieson had already done it. I never heard them say Jamieson had set a new English record.

tbh does it really matter? My Dutch friends often say English when they mean British and then correct it when pointed out. I don't make a fuss about it. Neither do they make a fuss when people refer to the Netherlands as Holland. Or being called Dutch which originally meant German.

And would the SFA really have had much involvment in Team GB in the Olympics anyway. Certainly the athletics equivalent, the SAL, isn't involved as its not part of its statutory or funding remit.

I'm afraid I hate rampant nationalism or even petty nationalism. To me, its racism with a small r.

redlac · 01/08/2012 20:14

How is it racist to want to keep a hold of your national football team FFS? Sep blatter even agreed at one point it would harm the Scottish, Welsh and Irish teams if they all agreed to merge for the Olympics

Out of interest , apart from the commonwealth games do the Scottish athletes compete as a Scottish team or individuals?

habbibu · 01/08/2012 20:16

Yay Jamieson! Brilliant race.

Mrsjay · 01/08/2012 20:16

was it Gary Linekar who said it he seems to not really get the whole great brittish thing and says English alot ,

Mrsjay · 01/08/2012 20:17

Just the commonwealth games reldlac the international games they run in a brittish team ( i think )

geegee888 · 01/08/2012 20:27

You get regional competitions but the only sort of international one is the Commonwealth Games. tbh in athletics, there are many coaches who aren't that keen on the Commonwealth Games, because its not that a high standard as opposed to a truly open international platform. I wouldn't be terribly supportive of more restricted competition for purely Scottish athletes, as it might not encourage attainment of the high standards of old on the international stage. Perhaps in football this is not so relevant ie being a big fish in a small pool is not necessarily seen as a bad thing if the purpose is to be seen to be good, simply by dint of existing and having lots of ~pointless~ paid officials, rather than judged impartially on an international stage.

Latara · 01/08/2012 21:07

Technically Jamieson set a new British record.
But we evil English people have an evil plan to turn all British records into English records.

And make all Scottish & Welsh & Northern Irish people English & eat Devon Cream Teas & Dorset Apple Cake.... & ban them from wearing kilts, speaking Welsh, &... non-English things like that!!!!

Mwahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha... er, hahahahahaha etc etc

But if we want to talk about feckwitted commentaries, this must take the proverbial biscuit:

"The English player is surrounded by Argentines!"

Marvellous, fantastic - except England is playing Uruguay

I say, disqualify the Argie buggers for being on the pitch when they shouldn't be - especially as they didn't qualify in the fist place! kerching!

youarewinning · 01/08/2012 21:30

cocos post at 19.28 is correct I think - well that's what I heard. They mentioned Jamieson being Scottish loads.

And whilst I'm here well done Jamieson - you were amazing and did Scotland proud.

JumpingThroughHoops · 01/08/2012 21:31

Slaps self, of course England isn;t playing Uruguay - GB is Blush

easy mistake to make ...

Latara · 01/08/2012 21:41

Seriously - If it's the BBC commentating then nothing surprises me... the licence fee is a waste of money IMO.
No-one i know could understand what the actual Olympic Opening Ceremony was all about - because the BBC presenters didn't explain anything or narrate events properly.

Tigresswoods · 01/08/2012 21:45

The flag thing annoys me. So what if there's St George crosses up, I've seen plenty of welsh flags too. I notice them as I grew up there. We're in an odd situation but we all know ultimately we're behind Team GB!

Will Scotland get a medal this evening?

I saw that Hmm

vj32 · 01/08/2012 22:32

Latara The BBC coverage of the opening ceremony was great because they DIDN'T try and 'narrate events' they mentioned a few things that you couldn't pick up on immediately - eg it being Brunel rather than random Victorian man played by Branagh, but then just shut up and let people watch.

If you want detailed narrative, listen to the radio.

wishinonastar · 01/08/2012 22:32

I also thought that Jamieson and an English record were never mentioned- as others have said Jamieson set a British record, than Willis set an English record that would have been the British record if it had been before Jamieson's swim :)

Well done Michael Jamieson- brilliant swim tonight :)

And tbh I've seen far more Scottish and Welsh flags than English flags so it seems a bit nit picky to moan about the English flags specifically. I do agree though that we should be supporting everyone as Team GB regardless of which part of the UK they are from.

Latara · 02/08/2012 23:02

vj - to be honest no-one i know picked up on the majority of things in the opening ceremony though; except for the James Bond / Queen bit; & Mr Bean. Who is Brunel anyway? I don't know & don't know anyone who would know either...
& why would you want to listen to the radio when you want to actually watch the ceremony on tv??

(ok... i know, time to look up Brunel on Google...)
