To think I'm entitled to extra baggage allowance??

After six years in London, I'm moving back to Perth in October. Currently planning how to get my belongings (not that many) back with me. AIBU to think that I should be allowed more than the 20kg luggage allowance because I don't weigh very much? I'm 59kg. If I weighed 30kg more I'd still get the same allowance. Grossly unfair!

please don't upset the tall people - I am 5ft 1" and wouldn;t be able to access porn without them

MaisyMooCow · 30/07/2012 15:26

gordy just view it on your computer, makes the tall people redundant.

Sparks1 · 30/07/2012 15:32

What is difficult about a scale at the check-in counter to stand on with your luggage?

Nothing. If you don't mind even longer waits at the airport.
Or the extra admin costs etc which you can bet the airlines will pass on.
Or the fact that you won't even know the cost of your flight.

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 30/07/2012 15:35

Is anyone else a bit concerned about the geographical knowledge of the people suggesting that she drive or take the train from London to Australia?

Sparks1 · 30/07/2012 15:41

Is anyone else a bit concerned about the geographical knowledge of the people suggesting that she drive or take the train from London to Australia?

Or the fact you assume she's not flying from London to Scotland... Grin

ImperialBlether · 30/07/2012 15:49

Just imagining someone bigger than average being told they have to travel with no luggage and only one shoe on.

Kendodd · 30/07/2012 15:50

How tall are you op? I think 59kg isn't that lightweight.

Although I do think you have (a bit) of a point. I once had to sit on a plane squashed between two real heavy weights, both spilling into my seat, for a 7 hour flight. I don't think they should have had a smaller luggage allowance than me but they I don't think they should have had extra seat (mine!) for free.

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 30/07/2012 16:07

Saprks I think the whole flight/weight think indicated that it wasn't London to Scotland! Plus she said Australia a few posts down!

thanks,

the tall people, are now considering withdrawing the generous access to shoulders, from which short people enjoy viewing concerts.

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 30/07/2012 16:50

Fly via USA and you get about 60kgs baggage allowance.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/07/2012 16:50

I have sometimes sneakily thought the same, more when I was a nervous flier and it occurred to me that if weight of the plane was of such paramount importance in not making is crash, how come it was ok if loads of people turned out to weigh a lot?

Spose it's not a goer really, though!

ratspeaker · 30/07/2012 16:55

Sparks1 Australia is not mentioned at all in the OP

I replied to that
To me Perth is a town about an hours drive away from Edinburgh airport

atm some airline charge you to have anything other than hand luggage
some charters allow 15kg luggage some 20kg luggage
Some will charge extra and give you a bigger allowance , most will charge a small fortune as you turn up at the check in.
Most people are reluctant to fork out more cash so stay within the airline limits

Airlines are in it to make money, so if they start telling people they have to have a certain BMI or pay extra they will lose a lot of custom and cash flow.
I also imagine if someone was paying extra for having a greater BMI they'd expect bigger seats, therefore reducing the passenger capacity, again the airline losing income

Itsjustafleshwound · 30/07/2012 16:56

Perhaps we should also start including the direction - if you are flying south you don't have to pay anything because you are just dropping down ... And if there is a headwind you get a discount ..... Smile

toobreathless · 30/07/2012 16:56

OP, don't be so ridiculous & fat-ist.

Honestly, yes people do have SOME control over how much they weigh but do many other things influence weight: height, sex, muscle mass, ability to exercise, general health, blah blah.

Send your stuff by ship or whatever.

& FWIW 59kg really doesn't sound that light. How tall are you? What's your BMI? How about loosing a couple of kilos prior to your trip so you can take more socks?? How do you feel now?

(& FWIW I am actually lighter than you so no personal axe to grind)

TheCrackFox · 30/07/2012 17:01

From the age of 2 yrs children have to pay full price for a plane ticket. By your reckoning they should have a luggage allowance of 60kg.

wear this

Attractive AND practical!

RabidAnchovy · 30/07/2012 17:33

59K = about 10 stone, that's not really light is it?

ivykaty44 · 30/07/2012 17:52

130 pounds equals 59kilo
10 stone is 140 pounds
so 59kilo is 10 pounds less than 10 stone
so around 9stone 4 pounds

DowagersHump · 30/07/2012 17:58

On that basis, my DS, who weighs 18kg, should be able to take 62kgs of luggage with him.

And children do pay the same as adults once they are over the age of 2.

GiserableMitt · 30/07/2012 17:58

*message from the tall people,

If you start being sizest and we will stop passing items off the top shelf at the supermarket.*

I laughed my tits off (not literally) at this Grin

GiserableMitt · 30/07/2012 18:01

Dowagershump not a blanket rule. Over the age of 2 children pay, but often not as much as an adult. 12 years old is often the point at which children are charged at full adult fare. We fly all over the show every year but have never paid an adult fare until DD reached 12.

Splinters · 30/07/2012 18:04

I'm with the op. After three months in Moscow I had to pay for 6kg extra baggage on the way home. I was outraged that they paid no attention tothe fact that I had lost 10kg since using the outward portion of my ticket Grin

Spuddybean · 30/07/2012 18:06

That's just typical Splinters and I bet the cheeky fuckers didn't even tell you you looked fabulous!
