She has really pissed me off with her snarky manner and childish face pulling.

Checkout girl in the supermarket easily a clear 10+ years older than me (so around 40 odd) was throwing my shopping through at a rate of knots so i politely asked her to stop for a moment to let me catch up with the packing to which I got a short "yeah if I must, you'll get a subtotal on your receipt tho" I responded that's fine and the conversation carried on like this (which I could have risen to but was completely polite!)

"Yeah well my manager won't be we're timed at how long it takes us to process this lot"

Oh I didn't know that, is that why shopping can be sent through at a rapid rate of knots at times? (Big grin and a chuckle to imply that it's not her that it's aimed at)

"You what? I wasn't sending it through at a 'rapid rate of knots' (said in a very childish mimicing/mocking tone)" at which point she looked away and pulled a 'rolly eye' face at her colleague and a face my 7 year old would be proud of pulling behind my back when she's told off!

Cue me trying to explain my remark and giving up because she was getting snotty.

I go to pay, hand over my nectar card, and she drops it. "Pick it up. I can't get it from there i've done my back in" again said in a really snarky tone. The card was hardly out of reach, it would have taken a small stretch at best for her to get it but instead I had to walk round pick it up and hand it to her with her annoying smug grin like she'd got one over on me.

I know it's a really really minor thing in the grand scheme of life but I loathe bad customer service, I work dealing with clients and suppliers day in day out and realise you get some that are easier than others to deal with which is why I always try to be polite and say thank you for their help etc etc She really has got my back up and I think I hate that she's got under my skin this much more than anything. It's really not 'me' to complain about things like this.

AIBU to report her to her manager?

Confused I worked at Tesco for 5 years and I've never heard scan rates mentioned, it was all scan and pack, ask for a clubcard, excellent customer service checked by mystery shoppers in those days.

Even back then they paid a lot more than minimum wage, including staff discount and sharesave options I was earning more there than I did at an entry level graduate job.

CuriousMama · 30/07/2012 23:03

Once in a Spanish supermarket, dp and I asked the cashier about taxis to take our shopping back to the apartment. She got up from her till, left a queue of people and went to a booth to ring one for us Grin No one batted an eyelid! Not that's customer service. Dp did speak Spanish to her so may have helped?

theodorakis · 31/07/2012 04:07

Zealey, i don't agree that Chanel has excellent service. they are usually too snotty to deal with anyone who isn't a celeb or rich arab woman. I buy Gucci and Ralph lauren clothes for work and practically have to serve myself.

Longdistance · 31/07/2012 05:45

No, don't report her. Go to her checkout everyday, and give her tuts, and rolly eyes cos she's soooo slow.
Add a few snarky comments yourself.
And you could be as smug as you like.
Don't forget to drop your nectar card and refuse to pick it up, as you have a bad back shouldn't be working on a checkout if she does

50shadesofslapntickle · 31/07/2012 06:46

Why are people saying just leave it? So it's ok to be an arsey twat when dealing with people? No, it isn't. No wonder we have such shitty customer service - complann away OP.

cybbo · 31/07/2012 06:59

As usual lots of posters ealy on in this thread completely missing the point and preferring to point out that the op shouldn't have called a 40 yr old woman a girl

This is why this place is in the words of my mate dizzee rascal B O N K E R Z

And yes op, you should report her

RuleBritannia · 31/07/2012 07:14

I worked temporarily at a Super Tesco in Reading. We were told to get the goods through the checkout asap and our rate of scanning was measured. In the staff area were league tables of who was fastest this week or that week. It was more about how many customers you got through the checkout than the speed of scanning the goods. I didn't see the point because scanning could be fast but packing annulled the fast scan rate.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 31/07/2012 10:52

cybbo, casual sexism is always worth pointing out, IMO and obviously in others' opinions too. And most of those who mentioned it didn't miss the point, but mentioned it and also gave a suggestion/opinion about the subject of the AIBU.

Glitterknickaz · 31/07/2012 11:37

I worked at Tesco a few years ago, before the kids' needs got too great.
There was definitely a scan rate.
They also measure how much time you take in between customers, how much 'down time' you have - which if the store is empty at 11pm on a Monday night there's not much you can do about - and that's used against you too.

JennerOSity · 31/07/2012 15:10

Tesco sound like a rubbish employer! You would think they would know that there may be a lull between customers late at night and not hold it against you! Ridiculous way to pull down your staff moral. :(

RichTeas · 31/07/2012 18:14

Surprised at the comments. I would report her not only to the store manager, but to Justin King (CEO if my guess of supermarket is correct). That is absolutely atrocious customer service, the woman should be sacked. Her job is to serve politely not to get sarky with customers. Also no problem with the use of the word "girl" why do people get so hung up on it, it's just a alternative name for woman / lady / female or in this case, cow.

Lots of people use the word 'girl' for a grown woman but wouldn't use the word 'boy' for a grown man. It's an infantilising term, not just an alternative.

Frontpaw · 01/08/2012 09:45

The nice lady in Sainsbos stopped for me twice yesterday as I was really slow packing and she was pretty fast! She was lovely, teased me in a sweet was to DS then gave him a jokey 'telling off' when he tried to explain to her why mummys job wasn't as important as daddys as she doesn't earn as much as him. A really lovely, chatty lady and she did offer to help me pack.

There is a woman in our local Waitrose on the tills who I avoid as she is very surly and rude, and slightly scary!

Alabama100 · 01/08/2012 10:12

Scan rates or no scan rates, there was no need for her to be rude to you. She's not scanning items for nothing, she works at said supermarket and is paid to do her job, this includes representing sainsburys and having a polite manner to all customers. It makes no difference if she had a shitty customer previously, she should act professional and polite to every customer. Its her job.

carycach · 01/08/2012 10:24

Let it go!

Alabama100 · 01/08/2012 10:26

And to add, I appreciate cashier earns min wage but that does not give her the right to be rude - rolling eyes, snapping etc.

NotGeoffVader · 01/08/2012 10:34

Waitrose don't appear to have a 'scan rate' - at least, if they do, it seems geared to whether the customer is packing their own shopping, how much shopping they have, and how mobile they are.

Can't comment on Sainsbo as I don't shop there.

CanISawItOff · 01/08/2012 12:44

Hi all just to let you know that I've had a response from Sainsburys with a profuse apology and 1000 nectar points.

Yes i did get her name and all i did in my complaint was be as factually accurate as i could be.

JennerOSity · 01/08/2012 14:07

Brilliant! Worth a complaint when it is taken seriously. Good for you. :)

perfumedlife · 01/08/2012 14:52

Good for you OP ! I'd have complained too. There's no excuse for taking your bad mood out on a customer or being so rude.

Alabama100 · 01/08/2012 15:37

Good for you op.

CuriousMama · 01/08/2012 18:38

Great stuff Smile

Ithinkitsjustme · 01/08/2012 19:21

I'm a cashier for a large supermarket and we do have checks on how fast we can scan (in fact there is a list of the fastest and slowest cashiers in the staff area!! Confused). I would be highly flattered at the thought that anyone would call me a girl (wrong side of 40) and no it wasn't me!! and some people on here might also be surprised at how many customers DO throw their cards at us.
I'd still complain - I doubt much will be done but you'll feel better for it.

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 01/08/2012 19:32

I wouldn't have asked her to slow down....I would simply pack at my own rate...I always do. If that means their queue is massive, then that's their fault. But YANBU. Complain. She was very rude.
