...to get them to try new foods, eat better generally, behave at crucial moments.... feel free to add to the list!

If you don't bribe how do handle these scenarios?

YANBU, in a way you are preparing them for rl, isn't paid employment a form a financial bribery :)

My dd knows that expect her to be good/ try stuff/ behave well.

Occasionally i will treat her, and she knows its a treat. I say to her 'its easy to treat you because you are so good'

Is that bribery, or positive reinforcement?
In the real world, when she gets a job, she will be rewarded for doing a good job, occasionally, with a rise or a promotion, so why not at home?

I'm sure most Mnetters will agree that the carrot is better than the stick!

I never bribe. I do, however, reward. And I sometime give details in advance of what I would consider would be deserving of reward. I have recently speculated within couchpotato DS's hearing that going out running every morning for a couple of weeks would be worthy of a particular DVD boxset. But I NEVER bribe.
