To be freaked out by my DDs imaginary friend.

She's called GIRL. She only comes out at night. One night when I'd had some bad dreams my DD said 'that's because girl was in your bed mummy'. Apparently girl also stands at the bottom of my bed while we sleep (horror film style). Is this normal??? My DD is not yet 3. Her imaginary friend seems a bit scary. Maybe I've watched too many horror films lol. She used to have one called Karen who was much less freaky :)

Is it just me or are onetiredmummy 's attempts to sound reassuring making this whole thing twice as scary? Grin

I am hopelessly drawn to threads like these: they are the non-sensible side of mumsnet.

Girl is officially terrifying. Good luck with that OP. Octa on the other hand: key-ute!

My ASD son had a friend called Nature. Unfortunately sometimes even Nature wouldn't play with him!!!!

My 2 year old son goes through phases where he wakes up the same time every night , and when I asked why

I got some garbled response about a ghost and castles over the door.

I'm with something and respectfully suggest you dont google your local spiritualist church. Smile but then I believe imaginary friends are.... Just imaginary friends.

My DS used to 'speak' to someone when he was younger - we always thought he was just babbling to himself. Until the day I was looking through some old photos with my mum. DS (then about 2 and not speaking yet) got really excited and pointing at a picture of my DGGM who died when I was 4. Freaked me right out. More recently (DS is now 4), he saw the picture again, he told me that 'that's nanny, she comes to talk to us at night sometimes' Nanny was the name we used for DGGM and my 16m DD got excited when we showed her the picture too.
Same happened when they saw a picture of DHs DGM, who died before I met him.
Weird - but maybe sometimes our relatives and those who loved us come back to 'visit' every now and then. Smile

I've come to the conclusion its normal and just the product of an active imagination. She said girl was at nursery today so at least girl has moved from night time antics in my room to doing more normal things like going to nursery lol.

My youngest had an imaginary friend called Emily. Just mentionned now and then. Then, visiting a great aunt of mine, DD saw an old photo of my great grandmother (who was called Emily), and declared in a happy voice, "that's Emily!"
Freaky! She hasn't mentionned her since she was about 3.5.

Not keen on "Girl" though.

My eldest had an imaginary friend at age 2 only he wasn't imaginary!!

Not sure if its really an imaginary friend (or even imaginary) as its not friendly but my 3 year old has a 'spooky' in his room who he's petrified of and keeps saying it bites him, sometimes it follows him into the front room and sometimes he stands outside the living room window watching, that makes him happy as it means he's not in the house.

Holy Christ that last one gave me goose bumps!

KellyElly · 27/07/2012 22:30

GIRL looks like a fairy compared to that!

My eldest (4 at the time) had a 'friend' called 'ghostie' Confused which was bad enough but he used to say things like "Ghostie is sitting next to you" when I was driving the car and one time he freaked my husband out by saying something Ghostie had said and my husband 'sent' him away. Never heard anything else about him!

NB. This would have been terrifying time for me (have really played it down but Ghostie made many appearances and seemed quite 'real' for a while) as I watch horror movies if it were not for my youngest who, upon seeing his big brother receiving loads of attention for this 'friend' decided to have his own friend who was called 'Sausage' (I was making sausages when he made his announcement - no coincidence I'm sure!). The day he rolled over on Sausage and split him in two will go down in one of my favourites as being a mother, he was in stitches and so was I.

one Dd had an imaginary griffle in the wardrobe, my wardrobe, it got a hello and chat before dd would climb in beside us in the morning
one had a dog- that we had to buy a lead and collar for

the monster under the bed was dealt with by telling it we dint tolerate them in the house and it must go away now < sternest voice>
and it couldnt come back as we put salt over the threshold ( thanks granny for that one )

Nodecentnickname · 28/07/2012 01:04

My 2.5 yr old has a yellow caterpillar called Mr Tappy. He demands baby bells all the time.

Nodecentnickname · 28/07/2012 01:04

Babybel cheeses.

In your case i'd employ my Grannys technique

you tell spooky in your most cross and sternest voice that its not behaving
It must leave
open door
then a line of salt over threshold stops return ( it cant cross the salt line- even after its vacuumed up )
repeat at bedroom door and bedroom window

my granny also told scared child ( me ) that the ornament she was placing on the windowsill would keep scary monsters away, forever

she was right
