over drying wet hair?

DH is in a mood with me cos I wasn't particularly bothered about drying DD's hair after her bath (she's 2).
It's 28 degrees in her room. I said it'll dry in no time. He rolled his eyes, told me to stop being stubborn Hmm and said you must always dry wet hair whatever the temperature, as DD mustn't get her bed clothes wet.
I think he's overreacting just a tad.

Who's right?! me obviously

Does he mean with a hairdrier or just towel dried?

We never used hair driers on DC, just lightly towel dried.

Pandemoniaa · 25/07/2012 19:39

This is the sort of nonsense my grandmother would spout. She assumed pneumonia stalked every hallway waiting to descend on children who were improperly dried.

YANBU. In fact, it would be completely unreasonable to add the heat from a hairdryer to the already baking temperatures. So actually, you are being sensible here.

HecateHarshPants · 25/07/2012 19:40

Why mustn't she get her bed clothes wet? What will happen to them? And how wet could they get with towel dried hair on them?

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 25/07/2012 19:42

I thought that said "oven drying wet hair" and had visions of you sticking your head in an oven to set your curls

ILikeMagicMike · 25/07/2012 19:42

I was always told not to go to bed with wet hair, mainly I think because it's not that comfortable.

It depends what length the hair is tho - wispy toddler hair -let dry, long thick mane, I'd give it a blast with the hairdryer.

mumof4sons · 25/07/2012 19:43

I must admit that I would never put my DCs to bed with wet hair, so agree with you DH about the bed clothes getting damp. Plus going to bed with hair will make get terribly tangled.

But if she is not going to bed straight away and her hair has time to dry before bed then I agree with you.

vj32 · 25/07/2012 19:44

The pillowcase/pillow could get mouldy.

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 25/07/2012 19:44

Just towel drying. She was already sticky from the heat in her room. I think he thinks you can catch fever from having wet hair Hmm

OP posts:
BobbysBeardOfWonder · 25/07/2012 19:46

What I mean is I did already rub it a bit but not enough apparently. It certainly wasn't 'wet'. She's in a sheet bag with no pillow, so hardly anything to get wet!

I don't own a hair dryer, we just make sure that the DC have showers or baths early enough so that their hair dries before bed. I don't like how hot my scalp feels when it's done with a hairdryer so I've never tried blowdrying my DC's hair.

gamerwidow · 25/07/2012 19:54

My 2 yo DD always goes to be with just towel dried hair so your DH is being silly.

OlympicAccreditationWearer · 25/07/2012 19:58

We just towel dry here. 4yo DD is scared of the hairdryer.

Kayano · 25/07/2012 20:00

My stupidly thick hair (that is not even that long ATM) takes pigging hours and hours to dry. I dot dry it fully but give it a blast with the drier to get the excess off and be comfortable.

akaemmafrost · 25/07/2012 20:03

He's being a chump.

I'd have to sit on my dd to dry her hair with a hairdryer. She is scared of them. Its not really been an issue thus far.

olympickibucket · 25/07/2012 20:06

Whole inside of house is broiling and the Aga doesn't help. So long as it's combed through it won't get any more tangled wet than dry.

1stMrsF · 25/07/2012 20:14

I never dry the DCs hair before bed. Always go to bed with it damp (towel dried). Always fine.

Catsmamma · 25/07/2012 20:16

of course he is perfectly correct

if he is a 75 year old grandmother!

JumpingThroughHoops · 25/07/2012 20:26

Wet hair is no problem if shes running round or even sitting still drying off - but wet bed clothes are a big ikk, who wants to sleep in damp musty sheets?

knackeredmother · 25/07/2012 20:31

My son has had a few episodes of being hospitalised with pneumonia. My gran thinks its because he isn't warm enough. I'm sick of explaining that pneumonia is caused by a bacteria or a virus NOT from having wet hair/ being cold.
I think people get confused with hypothermia.
Yanbu, your dh is talking rubbish!

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 25/07/2012 20:31

I hate going to bed with wet hair as it's uncomfortable and makes the bedding damp and ickky. Another reason I am fastidious about drying my kids' hair is that it can help to control headlice, (combined with treatments.)

I always throw a dry towel over DD's pillow before she goes to sleep. She has very thick hair and even when it's not towel-dried (soggy), it doesn't wet the pillow when a dry towel is over it.

What's the reason your OH has for insisting hair is dry before bed?

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 25/07/2012 20:54

Cos he believes in old wives' tales Hmm

And wants to think he knows best. I actually do think he believes you can catch a cold from being cold/having slightly damp hair.

honeytea · 25/07/2012 21:27

Why didn't he dry her hair if he thinks it is that vital?

I went to bed with wet hair as a child every time it was washed and we lived in a victorian house with no heating in the north of England basically it was bloody cold often I was fine, no ill effects.

whois · 25/07/2012 22:21

He is being U. I have very thick and quite long hair - I often go to bed with it towel dry wet. It actually isn't so nice in winter (in a cold attic bedroom) but no probs the rest of the year. And positively nice in this heat :-)
