Aibu to think parents with children under two should use little swimmers

Went swimming to day had a fab time until somones child shat in the pool in was an enclosed pool and full of small children and no one would own up we showed the life gaurds our child was wearing swimmers so we were allowed to leave but wtf small children are prone to have acidents so why would you not buy the bloody swimmers

We have a fair idea which parent and child it was i felt sorry for the staff who had to jump in and fish it out and it had broken in to pices Confused

YANBU, if a child isn't potty trained then they should have a swim nappy on.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/07/2012 20:09

YANBU. Gross.

Debeezandbirds · 24/07/2012 20:09

"no one would own up we showed the life gaurds our child was wearing swimmers so we were allowed to leave"

So children and families were held hostage until someone owned up to the floater in the pool?

Dozer · 24/07/2012 20:11

Grin pool lock-in!

Mrbojangles1 · 24/07/2012 20:11

Well they asked who it was no one own up a few of us incuding me showed our children were wearing swimmers and left their were about 6 other chikdrenith their parents who were left just standing their who clearly didnt have swimmers on their chikdren

I think penning them in was a bit harsh. I always thought babies had a don't shit in the water instinct. I used to buy the swimmers for DS but thought they were daft as the pee would leak anyway and babies didn't poop in water. Obviously wrong!

messtins · 24/07/2012 20:16

Our pool has a rule that all kids under 3 have to wear a swim nappy. I'm still a bit paranoid about it even with a disposable swim nappy and neoprene pants, though it's never happened. The shame of everyone being evacuated...Blush

Robomummy · 24/07/2012 20:17

YANBU. Brings back bad childhood memories of public pools, bleurghh

olivestree · 24/07/2012 20:20

My DD obviously didn't know about that rule when she was in the bath last week Debeez. Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 24/07/2012 20:21

Do people really take their infants swimming without swim nappies? I thought it was a rule that they had to have swim nappies, never mind just bendy plain common sense!

Saying that though, when ds was 9mo I took him swimming and his nappy exploded. The swim nappy may as well have been a chocolate teapot. Thankfully there was only one other person in the pool because it was the little one at a David Lloyd, the staff were lovely, and I got my money's worth out of my gym membership that month.

Scarredbutnotbroken · 24/07/2012 20:24

Yanbu in any way! Dd cannot be trusted not to poo on the pool - I would never take her without a swim nappy! More than anything I'd be mortified. Some people have no shame!

CaseyShraeger · 24/07/2012 20:29

Not necessarily little swimmers, which is just a brand after all, but some kind of swim nappy. None of mine have ever pooed in any kind of water (I am very lucky, I realise that) but I'd still never chance it.

JumpingThroughHoops · 24/07/2012 20:30

We were in the pool once and the staff managed to put the pumps in reverse, hence a slick of skin, hair, nails, nail varnish, plasters, lost ear rings etc etc etc making its way out.

Swimming pools are filthy places and I've never got in one since. Forget the toddlers crapping, the adults pissing and losing body parts was quite enough

shudders at the memory of the awful grey brown slick oozing back up

PinkPepper · 24/07/2012 20:30

blugh. My pool has a rule you need swim nappy AND some kind of outer thing to 'double up' or something. They sell packs at the pool

summerflower · 24/07/2012 20:33

Oh dear! I do use swim nappies for DS but honestly, you also get quite some warning when he stops whatever he is doing and his little face starts to go red. I'd whisk him out just in case, though it's not happened in the pool yet.

StrandedBear · 24/07/2012 20:33

I had no idea that pee comes out of swim nappies until today, when she squatted in the water play bit in the park and peed everywhere.

YANBU though poo should be contained in a nappy, though leakages can happen.

Debeezandbirds · 24/07/2012 20:34

olivestree Oh dear! DS never once shat in water. I always thought it was a waste of money all those little swimmers every week. Glad I didn't take the chance now.

I really thought it was an instinct not to defecate in water you were immersed in or drinking from.

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/07/2012 20:34

I was wondering the other day at what age do you stop using them? DD who is 2.7 has never pooed in the bath or swimming pool and we have gone weekly since she was tiny. She is now potty trained and hasn't had an accident, and twice I forgot to take a swim nappy to go under her costume to her lesson and she was fine. I did however feel a bit like I was doing something wrong, even though she will ask to get out to use the toilet for a wee if she needs to go... is it basically when they are potty trained and reliable it would be OK?

RuthlessBaggage · 24/07/2012 20:37

DS2 has pooed in the bath three times in a week.

We have a reusable swim nappy. That helps with the "such a waaaaaaaaste" thoughts.

YANBU.

BranchingOut · 24/07/2012 20:39

I have always used a washable swimming nappy - mostly the happy nappy type.

I always feel a bit Shock about the amount of nappy waste generated by a swimming trip: child arrives in nappy, nappy is thrown away, disposable swim nappy put on, swim, disposable swim nappy is thrown away, fresh nappy is put on. No wonder the bins are always overflowing....

HaplessHousewife · 24/07/2012 20:40

MrsHercule, the company that we do swimming lessons with says to wear nappies until they've been potty trained for six months but they hire out private pools and charge you huge amounts of money if your child poops in it so they are ultra cautious.

OhDearNigel · 24/07/2012 21:35

I always thought babies had a don't shit in the water instinct

Sooooooooo wrong. We used to take 2 swim nappies swimming, as soon as DD hit warm water a poo promptly followed

DrCoconut · 24/07/2012 22:00

Brings back memories of when DS1 was 2. We had a paddling pool and invited the neighbour's 4 year old DD round. All was fine until she screamed and went running to her mum. There was a floater in the pool and DS thought it was great. I hadn't thought he would still do it would have used a nappy rather than normal swimmies Blush He's 13 now and would be mortified at the thought of this event!

milkymocha · 24/07/2012 22:10

Blush DS did this today.
In his own paddling pool though so not near as bad.
Hes never poo'd before in a pool yet today was the 1st day i forgot his swimming nappy Grin
Live and learn.

mummymeister · 24/07/2012 22:17

ex env. health officer - we always took the view that pools should insist that all kids aged 2 or under wore swim nappies. If in doubt pool staff should ask age. i used nice non disposable ones for my kids and they worked really well. if somone poos in the pool then the operator is supposed to fish said poo out of the water asap then super chlorinate the pool i.e. get everyone out and put in a high dose of chlorine. this is in case the child (or adult!) has a tropical disease or has recently been vaccinated. public pools shouldnt be this scuzzy as filters should be cleaned out several times a day to stop this and back washing should also be done daily again to get rid of old plasters etc. Dont get me started on jacuzzi's!!
