Was family member U or was her comment warranted?

At a family BBQ yesterday, I was telling some family members that I had given DS (who I am about to begin weaning) a suck of a piece of watermelon.

I use a Nuby, it's a handle with a little net attached at the end so you can put fruit etc in it and the baby can suck on the fruit without risking them swallowing anything. DS thinks it's great!

Anyway I was lightheartedly explaining that shortly after having a good old suck on the watermelon DS had possitted (sp?) and how I had briefly panicked because there was a bit of red in his vomit before realising that it was watermelon juice.

Another family member, who wasn't part of the discussion but must have been listening, looked over and began exclaiming 'and you're a professional, that's really worrying' (repeating it until everyone had overheard). She meant that as I am a professional job, it is worrying that clearly I am so incompetent in RL.

I can't see how I have acted incompetently or in any way that would have any reasonable person worried that I should not be in a professional role!

babies gag to reposition food. it's NOT the same as choking! FWIW, YABU to use one of those net things!

plutocrap · 23/07/2012 10:18

your relative was rude and malicious, though.

LentillyFart · 23/07/2012 10:18

I would have twatted the gobshite in a very professional and resoundingly competent way. Job done.

DollysDrawers · 23/07/2012 10:19

Family member was being unkind. Ignore.

About the Nuby, your choice entirely of course but a mum at our school had a bit of a shock one day when the netting came almost clean off and ended up in her baby's mouth.

incompetentandunprofessional · 23/07/2012 10:20

Plutocrap - what is wrong with the Nuby? Genuine question, I hadn't heard of them until recently when I heard people raving about them, thought it was quite a good idea!

anychocswilldo · 23/07/2012 10:20

Ignore her, she was being a cow! U didn't say or do anything wrong and u can tell her that it doesn't matter how 'professional' u r, when it's ur child u still panic i'm a nurse and thats true for me too Try to forget it, she sounds awful Smile

incompetentandunprofessional · 23/07/2012 10:20

Oh ok, X post with Dollysdrawers. Now, I really would panic if that happened, may reconsider using it again!

incompetentandunprofessional · 23/07/2012 10:22

And (sorry to drip feed) but it wasn't like I had been running round the house screaming and calling an ambulance, just for a split second thought 'oh shit'... and then realised it was watermelon juice.

I wouldn't have said anything to you, your level of parenting care is far beyond anything I have ever done, so I would just watch in wonder at your many gadgets and precautions.
I have relatives like you, I find silent amazement is always safest.

DollysDrawers · 23/07/2012 10:22

God I dd that loads of times when I first had DS, scared myself shitless on countless occasions!

Hyperballad · 23/07/2012 10:23

Just tell them to stick it next time :)

DollysDrawers · 23/07/2012 10:23

Sorry, I wasn't trying to scare you about the Nuby.

DitaVonCheese · 23/07/2012 10:25

I've had the same thing, big chunks of watermelon in DS's nappy look like chunks of flesh and scare the crap out of me, momentarily, every single time. And I have an Oxford degree (but am sleep deprived to the max Wink). Ignore, they were being a dick.

We have one of the Nuby net things (was a gift). Used it once, DS couldn't really get much out of it, then oh my god the faff of getting the damn chewed up fruit out of the net. Haven't used it since! Plain old BLW is a hell of a lot easier.

Sirzy · 23/07/2012 10:25

She was being rude, but I agree with those nets being a bit pointless just give them the food to suck on

mattaz · 23/07/2012 10:25

Actually I use a nuby as my baby can't grip watermelon or cucumber very well as it slips out of his hand. I also put ice fruit in too instead of an Ice lolly as an alternative.

In regard to the op, your relative sounds like an idiot. Clearly it was just a comment taken too literally by them. I would have probably laughed in an amused way as easy mistake to make! Smile

FallenCaryatid · 23/07/2012 10:26

'Plain old BLW is a hell of a lot easier.'

Is that where they help themselves off your plate? My teenager still does that.

incompetentandunprofessional · 23/07/2012 10:26

Fallen - are you being sarcastic? I don't for one minute think I'm great because I own a gadget. I was just scene setting for my reason for panicking. So sorry for offending you for owning a piece of net with a handle on, clearly very PFB of me!

OP posts:
FallenCaryatid · 23/07/2012 10:29

Not sarcastic, my PFB is 21 now. I was just continuously astounded at the amount of stuff and safety devices and equipment that my sister and sisters in law had for their children, who are younger than mine.
I used to ask 'What's that?' and either got a 40 minute lecture or a snappy answer, so I went with awe and wonder after the first few times.

mattaz · 23/07/2012 10:31

Not pfb imo. My ds Is my second. I didn't use it for my dd as she had a good grip and was a good eater. I only use it for him now to keep him busy while I get on with jobs and I know he won't having any "choking" moments as he's not so good with lump in his food.
I'm a nurse and I'm pretty sure I had little worries like that with my dd. easy to make whatever you do and whoever you are I think.

FallenCaryatid · 23/07/2012 10:32

I BF both of mine and used to worry about dirty air getting into the bottles that I sterilised for putting plain boiled water into.
My mother kept a straight face as I swiftly tried to carry the bottle inverted and then fill it ASAP to avoid contamination.
My SIL sterilised everything her children came into contact with until they were 3.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 23/07/2012 10:33

Relative was being a beeee-yatch.

YANBU, obviously.

FallenCaryatid · 23/07/2012 10:33

So the answer is yes, I think your family member was tactless and rude.

TheMonster · 23/07/2012 10:33

There was no need for her comment. I get comments like that about all sorts of aspects in live. Because I am a teacher I am expected to never make a mistake. Hmm

incompetentandunprofessional · 23/07/2012 10:34

Fallen, you've made some sweeping assumptions about me from nowhere. Where in my OP did I claim to be an amazing parent, that I own every safety gadget going, or that I would give anyone a lecture or a snappy answer to any questions? In fact the focus of my OP was more like 'am I an incompetent parent for panicking that DS had red vomit', in no way have I bigged myself up re my parenting skills.

The use of a gadget wasn't relevant to my AIBU anyway (although appreciate advice of other posters who have advised me sensibly about it)

OP posts:
Spuddybean · 23/07/2012 10:34

I hate these comments. They are designed to make the other person feel superior, but in fact show they feel inferior. I am the only person in my family to have gone to Uni and i get it all the time. 'So much for a uni education' 'well that was money well spent' 'you're supposed to be intelligent' etc.

They are the ones with a chip on their shoulders. I'm not sure how having an education/professional job in one specialism is supposed to make you yoda, but obviously i'm thick and must have gone to the wrong university Wink

Don't worry about it. I'm sure everyone's response of alarm would have been the same.
