It's not just any food, it's M&S overrated food...

Won £100 on the lottery whoop! So wasted a bit on a very berry cheesecake from M&S for me and DD1 as a treat, only to find its bloody awful foamy tasteless shite.

Should have just got the basic lemon one from Tescos, much nicer. AIBU or is M&S food overhyped?

I bought a sandwich from there the other day. It was shite. Tasted very sweet, and I wouldn't buy another (ham egg & salad cream if you're interested).

Inneedofbrandy · 21/07/2012 23:02

I love M&S food tbh, never had anything horrible from there. There apple and cinnemon (sorry spelling) is fucking awesome and there fruit really tastes like fruit should.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/07/2012 23:03

Don't say that. They're I'm catering DD2's christening from there tomorrow!

thunksheadontable · 21/07/2012 23:11

For Christmas Eve dinner for the last two or three years, we have got a leg of lamb from there that has some sort of rosemary/garlicky stuffing. It is unbelievable.

Some of the food is overhyped, no doubt about it - not a major fan of their puddings myself. However, my cousin who works supplying food ingredients to retailers says that M & S are unbelievably pernickety about where they source theirs from, insisting on cherries being picked from the south-facing portions of fields etc and being insanely scrupulous about every aspect of food production from the moment something is killed/picked/harvested etc right through to packaging.

So I think YABU!

Olympicnmix · 21/07/2012 23:12

Had their arborio stuffed pepper and bacon herby cheese wrapped chicken with green beans in the middle tonight and it was lovely.
If in a rush the Gastro Yorkshire pudding, beef and potatoes is good
Cookies are lush and the dcs are partial to a M&S cottage pie.

Tesco cheesecake tastes like cardboard imo, disappointed to hear the M&S one is bad. I don't like their Italian ranges which are glutenous slop.

justanothertenminutes · 21/07/2012 23:14

Oshuk, I had that sandwich recently, tasted most peculiar!

Nannyto2 · 21/07/2012 23:21

I have worked for m&s before and have dealt with very few ( ie 1 maybe 2 in 8 weeks) that find the food horrid etc.

If you are that bothered return the packaging and explain it to them

CommaChameleon · 21/07/2012 23:24

Their creme brûlée is very nice.

But they charge a vast fortune for two parsnips with a bit of honey dripped on them.

Inneedofbrandy · 21/07/2012 23:31

Wish I could always food shop in M&S instead of asda Envy

wannabedomesticgoddess · 21/07/2012 23:36

If I could I woukd shop there all the time. Not really for the standard of all the food (though most is nice) but for the variety. There are things in M+S that you just dont even know you want until you are there!

Oh and the iced rasperry jam filled fingers are heaven :)

Pochemuchka · 21/07/2012 23:37

I think it's about expectation.

I always think I'm going to have something really delicious from there but am always disappointed to find out it's just the same as if I'd bought it from Tesco or Asda only miles more expensive
When we were growing up it was a treat to have M & S food as the nearest one was 25 miles away!
I can't help thinking that they dine out on their reputation and the loyalty of that generation of customers.

bunnywhack · 21/07/2012 23:42

It' s a bit hit and miss their fruit and veg is always lovely but their ready meals are very meh. We tend to buy ingrediants from there to cook something special rather than rely on their made stuff.

MrsBovary · 21/07/2012 23:44

I wouldn't go so far as to say a basic cheesecake would taste better. But I'd prefer food from Waitrose and other places/brands over M&S, 'tis a little overrated.

Softlysoftly · 21/07/2012 23:47

Don't want to complain though as their staff were so nice, DD1 dropped a lolly she bought (yes yes we had a sugar overdose new baby guilt day) and the staff went and got her a replacement even though it was her own fault. And they credit noted a return I was 3 wks late bringing back (too small baby gift). The lady looked at the reciept, said "it's out of date", paused, scrunched up receipt, said "no receipt? I can credit note it" whilst cooing at baby. :)

It should be "not just any staff M&S staff"

Oh and I've heard their christening food is amazing Grin

mrsbovary Waitrose I can never fault but it's a dangerous place to enter especially when hungry!

If it was rubbish then YANBU, YA however BU to say the entire food range is over-hyped because it isn't-only had one thing from there I didn't like & when I emailed & told them they sent me a gift card-customer service at it's very best as far as I'm concerned as there was nothing wrong with the product, I just didn't like it.

kittysaysmiaow · 22/07/2012 09:52

thunkshead I agree. I once visited a supplier of m&s as part of my old job (they made chinese snacky items like prawn wontons). The standards of the factory and the ingredients were incredibly high, m&s inspectors visited constantly and were rigid in their approach. The supplier was very proud that his factory was up to scratch. I've felt very confident in buying m&s food ever since.

liketochat1 · 22/07/2012 09:54

I find the m and s fruit and veg far better than other stores. And overall I do prefer their food to other stores. The staff in my local store are really lovely, much nicer than those in the Tesco express!

FreeButtonBee · 22/07/2012 09:57

Yabu

I am 10 wks pregnant with twins and am basically living on m&s ready meals (am normally a make everything from scratch person inc stock/pizza dough/bread etc).

I have been pleasantly surprised by their ready to eat stuff - moussaka was pretty good, filled pasta also, not so keen on their parmetier potatoes but franklymwhen most food makes me want to hurl, they're doing pretty well.

Must admit i have no sweet tooth at the mo so Can't comment on the cheesecake.

EdgarAllenPimms · 22/07/2012 10:00

i think YABU - M&S may be pricey, but i've found their stuff very very nice.

the toffee pecan cheesecake is delicious.

and their frozen puddings are larger than Waitroses

StealthPolarBear · 22/07/2012 10:02

Gwendolune we have used their sandwich platters quite a lot, never been disappointed

SquidgyBiscuits · 22/07/2012 10:07

I think M&S is alright, but there isn't much there for me. I'm not really a fan of pre-packaged food and veg. I get my meat from the butcher, my fish from the market and all that's left is fruit & veg which I sometimes get from M&S, bug it's a long way for me to go for what I could get at Asda down the road.

I do get party food from there, and their celebration cakes are lovely. I got canapés from there for my wedding which were very well received. Had a bit of a disaster picking them up though, and 45minutes after arriving at the store, I was left to carry 4 bags that were massive and too heavy for me to even lift, to the carpark, when part of the service is that they get taken to your car I the pick up spaces. I did complain about the whole thing, but complimented the canapés themselves and was sent a gorgeous bouquet of flowers and a £50 gift card.

olivestree · 22/07/2012 10:09

Their Lasagne Al Forno is lush, but I nearly died when I saw the fat content. A tiny portion is about 90% of your fat allowance for a day. Shock

FushiaFernica · 22/07/2012 10:13

I think you have just chosen the wrong product. The majority of the food in m and s is lovely, I agree that their cheesecakes aren't that great and sometimes their bread buns are stale even when in date. I actually quite like tesco's value cheesecake.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/07/2012 10:15

I love M&S food. It's all yummy.
