It's not just any food, it's M&S overrated food...

Won £100 on the lottery whoop! So wasted a bit on a very berry cheesecake from M&S for me and DD1 as a treat, only to find its bloody awful foamy tasteless shite.

Should have just got the basic lemon one from Tescos, much nicer. AIBU or is M&S food overhyped?

Until you've tried the M&S chocolate pyramids and M&S salted caramel cheesecake you haven't lived.

I love the eat in for £10 deals, I think they're good value for money and really yummy.

janji · 22/07/2012 10:36

I always order all of my Christmas food from there (dinner, party food, hand, canapés etc) and can't fault them. Had a problem with my order one year and had to wait 15 mins for it to be resolved so was given part of it free.

janji · 22/07/2012 10:37

Hams not hand !!

brightermornings · 22/07/2012 10:46

We live m & s food in the brighter house. A few years ago I'd ordered some food for Christmas. When I turned up to pick it up my dessert was missing. They offered to get another one and send it to my house in a taxi!! I picked something else and got a free bottle of wine Grin

monkeyslut · 22/07/2012 11:03

YABU and a tad ungrateful to be honest.

I miss M&S food Sad

dondon33 · 22/07/2012 11:12

YANBU to not have liked it but YABU to write off all M&S food.

I only buy a few specific things from there, M&S coleslaw and also the clotted cream are to die for.

BrandyAlexander · 22/07/2012 11:16

I love M&S food! If they did home deliveries that's where I would do all my food shopping. To the poster doing the baptism from there, don't worry its lovely!

Thymeout · 22/07/2012 11:20

YABU - only Waitrose and, sometimes, Sainsbury's, match their readymeals imo. Wouldn't trust Tesco's.
But I agree with you about some things tasting sweet. I've noticed this. I think it's because they're trying to reduce the salt content in their products. I can understand why, but it's disappointing when a new, improved recipe doesn't taste as good as the one you remember.

lovebunny · 22/07/2012 11:21

stopped going to m+s when they had their silly 'its not just' adverts and used them to cover putting up their prices eg £2.99 to £4.18.
recent reorganisation in manchester store has cleverly reduced stock held in all departments.

if you use their cafes, watch out for their tea. i noticed it was ridiculously hot, then heard a colleague was badly scalded when she dropped her cuppa.

NotGeoffVader · 22/07/2012 11:24

I've not had a problem with their food, but then I think I'm a bit of a supermarket snob.

I posted on another thread recently about ordering food to be delivered to our holiday let (great tip from MN-ers!) - the supermarket isn't one we would normally use - and I was very disappointed with the quality of food, considering it cost the same as I would pay for the 'essentials' range from "my" supermarket.

I was chatting about this to a friend of mine who said that he thought that the food from Co-op was rubbish, but compared to what I had from Sainsbo's, it was gormet quisine.

SerendipitousHarlot · 22/07/2012 12:56

Isn't tea supposed to be hot then?

Olympicnmix · 22/07/2012 13:00

I wouldn't touch much food out of the Harrods' foodhall. Saw where they got their Christmas puds from and it was filthy with flies crawling everywhere.

Waitrose is opening near me soon which makes me very Smile

Not M&S based but I have a party coming up that I am giving. I usually shop at Asda (just for me) but when I'm catering for friends/relations, I shop at M&S. I bought myself an Asda pecan and toffee roulade a few weeks ago. I would die for another because it was so yummy and thought I'd have four at my party. I went in today to buy some and found none there and not even a shelf price for them. I'm so disappointed .........

alphabite · 22/07/2012 13:06

I love M&S food. I also think their customer service is great. I took back a dress yesterday, had no receipt and they didn't bat an eyelid at giving a credit note for the full amount. Just as she was putting it under the counter she and I both noticed a deodrant mark which must have happened when I tried it on. She didn't even mention it and still gave me the credit note. I would have completely understood if she hadn't as it was my fault it had a deodrant mark. She definitely saw it.

AKissIsNotAContract · 22/07/2012 13:11

I won't eat their ready meals after I chomped into a big clump of hair in one a couple of years ago. A single hair I could forgive but not a clump, it still turns my stomach to think of it.

Waspie · 22/07/2012 13:13

I have saved a fortune since the "Simply Food" near my office closed down and I no longer pop in for a sarnie and something to eat in the evening. Now I take a packed lunch, meal plan for the evenings and feel really virtuous. I still miss the M&S though!

ripsishere · 22/07/2012 13:18

I love M+S food but can't comment on puddings. I don't tend to eat sweet things, nor eggs so that sandwich is not a commentable option either.

Tangointhenight · 22/07/2012 13:24

Meal for 2 for £10 is brilliant!!! Sorry but I think YABU, their food I much better than tescos.

Softlysoftly · 22/07/2012 13:30

Ok IAB a little unreasonable clearly, in honesty I was surprised as I worked for the company who supplied their cheese and they after waitrose got the best.

I shall force myself to go buy some selected items from their savoury ranges, as a test, not because I want to you understand.

I will however stick to Tesco Lemon cheesecake.

You are BU. Their dine in for a tenner beats any of the other supermarkets especially if you get the full chicken option. Their wine is expensive and I wouldnt buy it from their unless it was part of the meal deal.

Im just off there now, we are getting to the time when the knock practically everything down.

I bought a packet of 8 steaks from there last week. reduced from £24 to £6.

You cant beat M and S although I wouldnt buy their sandwiches

Thymeout · 22/07/2012 14:10

The M&S Simply Food outlets in garages and stations are franchises. The prices are higher because of the rent/deal with the owners. Sometimes a lot higher, tho they do have the same offers as the main stores. Worth bearing in mind as it gives a false impression of M&S value for money.

Agree about the Dine in for Two deal. And their chocolate fudge cake is delish.

Don't like the Deli island or Artisan bakery we have in one of the main stores, though. The Deli is too Italian and the 'old-fashioned bloomer' was like a brick.

RadioRentalMum · 22/07/2012 14:34

I love the Dine in for a Tenner deal, never had a bad meal and it's a nice weekend treat when the deal's on. I also love the Simply Food outlets, so handy if you've been out all day and are looking for something to pick up on the road and slam in the oven when you get home, pricey but sometimes worth it! Grin

janelikesjam · 22/07/2012 15:30

I've had some vile meals from M&S, but to be honest most pre-packaged, processed meals and puddings leave alot to be desired. I do think there is some hype though, as I've had some Sainsburys meals which are a tad better.

I also recently bought a steak from M&S (can't go wrong there I thought). It was awful.

The only thing I really buy there now is fruit (its the best, esp grapes, oranges and apples), chickens, wine and a few other bits and pieces.

Even there ham, which I rated as the best, has been eclipsed by Aldi's (at a third of the price).
