Just doing my bookkeeping. One firm have had 2 invoices and paid them on time. Now I am going though the books I have just noticed the amount paid into my account is approx £30 short on each 2 invoices. Each invoice approx £1200. Lost the contract as the woman in accounts and I did not get on too well (put my hands up to the fact I could have handled things better).

Is this 2 genuine mishaps or are they pulling a fast one-they are supposed to be a reputable business but I am a bit perplexed on this one.

Well how Long ago was it and did you nt address it at the time?

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:26

I am doing my books now and only when checking the invoices and the amount paid into the bank I have just noticed the discrepancy. I am currently doing traditional paper bookkeeping-if I had Sage50 this would have been flagged up immediately.

I never thought to check the amounts until now-more fool me. Anyhow have emailed MD and asked for the 60 odd quid shortfall so it should get fixed.

Just want to know if this is accident or deliberate?

I was just wondering because I work there lol Wink

Kayano · 21/07/2012 19:29

I don't know really could be a cheeky deliberate ploy to underpay (ESP if the accounts lady didn't like you) it could be a genuine mistake

(I once typed in an account number instead of check value number and nearly credited someone for £6million pounds once) Grin caught that one and fixed it thank gawd

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:29

You do not know where it is-I did not give the name!

Sounds more like you need to be a bit more efficient with your book-keeping.

You dont need sage to balance your books.. a spreadsheet is very easy to keep.

How do you think people coped before the invention of computers anyway?

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:30

I wish you would credit me £6 million...

Squeaky

I came on here to ask a genuine question-not to be criticised by people. I only started a business a few months back and am on a steep learning curve. I do my best.

OP posts:
civilfawlty · 21/07/2012 19:34

But... how could anyone here know the answer?

Kayano · 21/07/2012 19:35

It is hard turbo and it is a steep learning curve, hopefully it was just an error but you've picked up on it and can resolve it.

I've seen people do their books wrong for years and only pick up on it when they get fined Sad it can be hard work

MrsPnut · 21/07/2012 19:35

It may be a mistake or it may be that they have a policy of collecting an early payment discount from every contract invoice they pay.

I would advise checking your business bank statement weekly though and checking it against the invoices you've raised and the invoices you've paid. It will only take minutes but will avoid this in the future. It is tricky doing accounts if you aren't used to them but most of it is being methodical.

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:35

No one can KNOW the answer...other than the woman in accounts. I am asking you what you think.

I think it is a con, hubby thinks it is a genuine mistake...

squeakytoy · 21/07/2012 19:36

Well so far you have strange ideas about paying wages, and clearly not much clue about accounts, so why not hire an accountant to do this sort of stuff for you, or your business will not last very long.

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:38

I don't think it can be an early payment discount as one is 97.5% of the total and the other is 97.2% of the total. If it was a discount it would be the same.

I agree need to do books weekly from now on..

OP posts:
turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:41

What strange ideas do I have about paying wages-I pay everyone on time and I pay a damn sight more than the cleaners average of 6.08-6.50 ph.

I am doing my best to learn this stuff and as I have a Cambridge doctorate am hardly thick.

I just think you are a very critical individual. can you never contribute constructive advice or do you just enjoying putting people down?

OP posts:
Kayano · 21/07/2012 19:41

I would alert not the accounts lady but the owners.

I've also known people to be suspected of underpaying suppliers and pocketing the rest. (not in a work situation btw - personal)

turbo1 · 21/07/2012 19:42

Is there any way you can push an ignore button on here?

OP posts:
LentillyFart · 21/07/2012 19:44

You asked -

Just want to know if this is accident or deliberate?

So what I want to know is - how in the name of all that is Holy do you expect anyone here to be able to answer that question?

DuckingHell · 21/07/2012 19:45
