Not wild about DS's holiday homework. Not everyone gives a toss about the Olympics.

School have asked parents to help their DC create a blog over the summer holidays; the school is very techno-happy (which is a Good Thing generally). They have made provision for DC whose families don't have a computer or internet access; suggesting either a visit to the library or making a paper diary in stead. That's all fine, DS would love doing a bit of that every day.

But it's got to be 'about the Olympics'. No one in our family gives a flying fuck about sport. DS is far more interested in trains than watching overpaid steroid-addled numpties hop about. DS dad might pontificate from time to time about important cultural events and all that shit, but he's only really interested in typesetting. And me, not only do I despise all competitive sport, but I also object to the corporate piggishness and the all-round inconvenience of having this crap all over my home town. Why the fuck couldn't they just have asked the kids to do a blog about what they get up to in the holidays?

All the people offering suggestion as to what SGBs DS can do, are missing the point!
ITS THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS! FUCK THE HW, GO ENJOY YOURSELVES!

FunnyLittleFrog · 20/07/2012 23:25

Yep, teacher here too and I say don't do it. Schools should not set homework, other than reading perhaps, over the summer. Especially not about the fecking Olympics. They'll have had shite loads of Olympics related stuff already.

Holiday homework is stupid

short but to the point

squeakytoy · 20/07/2012 23:45

I am 43, and can still remember having a project given to us in the summer holidays. I dont think it is a bad thing to have to do, and is hardly going to take up much of the 6 week break.

I also think that the subject being the Olympics is a very reasonable one, considering it will be dominating the national news over the summer.

There are plenty of aspects that could be covered.

CaliforniaLeaving · 21/07/2012 00:03

Holiday homework is so mean, Summer hols are for relaxing and having fun.
On the other hand we aren't a sporty family at all so this homework would be tedious. There are many subjects in school that my kids had to do a project on that we had no interest in and found it to be pointless, but it was school work and as such needed to be done. I'd tell the kid to suck it up and just do it.

BrianCoxhasSmellySox · 21/07/2012 00:15

Bollocks to the homework, I called for a 'We hate the Olympics' quiche and not one of you twunts has taken me up on it.

wine is my friend this eve

IM IN! It's all a load of old wank!

I think I may start a thread.

AmberLeaf · 21/07/2012 00:42

Ill join that quiche Briancox.

I'll also join a fuck holiday homework one too.

What's the point of it anyway? Its set by his year 2 teacher who won't be his year 3 teacher so who cares?!

My DS had a teacher who sent home loads of sheets with suggestions of fun things to do over the summer. As if I'm incapable of amusing my child. Probably well meant but not necessary.

BrianCoxhasSmellySox · 21/07/2012 00:42

ahem

BrianCoxhasSmellySox · 21/07/2012 00:44

Ah, yes, the 'helpful' information on how to entertain your child.

There's nowt wrong with a sausage roll, bottle of full fat coke and Disney channel on 24/7.

Oh, hang on a minute, that's what 'they' think we do with our children isn't it.

Tossers!

BrianCoxhasSmellySox · 21/07/2012 00:44

(sorry, Nanny State gets me all ranty)

AmberLeaf · 21/07/2012 00:51

Me too!

Yes it was as if without her charming suggestions my child would spend the 6 weeks gazing out of a window while I ignored him that pissed me off.

Gawd she really got on my tits that one.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/07/2012 01:02

Maybe you should have made an alternative list!

NonnoMum · 21/07/2012 01:12

Here's a thought - fastforward twenty years and your DS has, after years of training, gotten to the final of the men's 100 meters in Singapore or Rome or Buenos Airies or whereever.
And wins a medal. And his mum wasn't there to watch him, as she doesn't give a flying fuck.
Don't impose your opinions on him.

mothmagnet · 21/07/2012 01:17

Like others I say yanbu, I also am so far uninterested in the whole thing.

However, watch this Paralympics trailer, it's brilliant, an amazing 90 second video. I'm actually excited about seeing this event now.

Not that I approve of holiday homework either btw Smile

Viviennemary · 21/07/2012 01:25

Holiday homework!! Never heard of such nonsense for a young child. And on the Olympics. Talk about adding insult to injury. Don't bother.

brdgrl · 21/07/2012 01:26

YANBU. It's a lot of nonsense. And the lack of perspective about it all just makes me alternately amused and a bit sickened.

I agree though with some of the others - you can turn it into something "else" with more value. I liked the suggestion of researching the stories of some of the athletes' home countries...or of the downside of the Olympics...saw a great piece a while back about the detrimental effect of the Games on the city of Atlanta...

brdgrl · 21/07/2012 01:27

or, yes - fuck the homework!

Frontline · 21/07/2012 01:27

You're being a twat.
He needs to find out about things he might not be interested jn

ZhenThereWereTwo · 21/07/2012 02:10

YANBU

How about a blog about what a ridiculous waste of money it is and how it is affecting transport infrastructure (think Olympics lane traffic nightmare)?

Accuracyrequired · 21/07/2012 06:23

i don't see the need for all this fuck the bollocks and wank homework nonsense

it's possible to think holiday homework is unnecessary without sounding like a rioter

LadyInDisguise · 21/07/2012 06:41

NonnoMum
If one of my dcs was doing that and winning a gold medal in the Olympics, I would be there top support him.
But I still wouldn't be watching all the other sports.

The issue here is that it's a blog which will require some input everyday. And that means you will have to follow what is happening at the Olympics everyday. Does it mean spending quite a bit of time watching TV everyday too so that you have something to say?

I have to say, if you love swimming/have been doing competition/just even like watching that specific sport and do it all year round, I can understand. But surely, what is the point of watching something you are not usually interested in? I am getting the feeling people do that ONLY because there is such a hype in the media. (and yes it's good for tourism etc.. or so they tell us).

exoticfruits · 21/07/2012 07:43

He doesn't have to watch the Olympics - he can do as brdgrl says. In fact being different should make his stand out and be a good thing.

JeezyPeeps · 21/07/2012 08:06

Surely not every topic he does in school is something that interests him? I don't think that aspect of this should be an issue. The school chooses topics, If the kids don't like it it's kind of tough, really.

My kids often got something to do in the holidays - I don't see the issue with that either, depending on how much he has to do. Is he doing a blog by himself, or is he making one or two contributions to a school blog?

And there is so much to the Olympics, I'm sure there is a topic there to suit everyone.

What about writing about the history of the mascots, (ie where their names came from), that's very interesting IMO?
