If the carer is an adult, can they not sleep with 2 kids, and you sleep with 2 kids...

molepom · 20/07/2012 20:11

YANBU People have to do it in their homes all of the time.

molepom · 20/07/2012 20:12

and yes, some of these comments are disgusting.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/07/2012 20:15

OP it seems unbelievable that in this day and age you are having so much trouble booking a holiday for you and your family. I feel for you.

I do know the answer to one of your things though - Premier Inn or might have been the other one would be required to do PAT testing (portable appliance testing) on all their, well, portable appliances. This is a H&S and fire risk assessment requirement. Happens to us at the school I work at too e.g. Teachers are not allowed to bring in radios or whatever from home for their classrooms. The automatic inflator motor on a portable air bed would count as a portable electrical appliance. I think.

Anyways they should be able to accommodate you without you having to bring your own bloody BED. To a HOTEL FFS.

Good luck. Throw the Equality Act book at them, if you can face it.

Debs75 · 20/07/2012 20:23

OP yanbu at all. Disables access is a joke in many places and not very well thought out in most of them. You think it would be common sense for places like Premier Inn to have the accessible room with a connecting door to another room. That way if you needed 6 staying you could book them rooms, if you didn't need 6 beds they would just make sure the door was locked and neither occupant given the key or code to open it. Unfortunately they want to make loads of money so they design rooms in a certain way to maximise floor space then put in minimal additions to make it 'disabled accessible' without thinking it through, ie the shower having a step.

I'm afraid you may have to look at more expensive accommodation which will probably mean a lot of ringing around and discussing your requirements with loads of not very clued up hotel managers, be prepared for more negative comments.

I do hope you find something suitable though. IIRC family fund has links to accessible cottage accommodation, they might be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction

TheHumancatapult · 20/07/2012 20:29

Squeaky it's maxium of 4

Premier in disabled rooms are maximum if two so still issue . We just want change from centre parcs out of season breaks

Hearts I'm intending to but shall start asking questions it happens abroad certain company only used to have two in disabled room but quite rightly started getting pulled up and now have accessible rooms that sleep 4

Yes I cam understand electrical and their grounds on that though did point out to them his airbed is by lung power . Mind I'm plugging in my powerchair too

Am looking at hoseasons thank you and have emailed them as to what level the access is as disabled access can mean differnent things to people /companies so now double check been caught out lot with accessible rooms to find they mean wide door and hand rails on the bath

I'd speak to haven and try to get them to bring the price down. I'm sure I read about something similar where the pson was successful.

Is it worth looking around at charities that have accessible accommodate for holidays? I know they exist for children with disabilities, not sure about adults?

It must be s nightmare, tho Tbh it's hard enough finding accommodation for 6, even in hotels, without having to factor in disabilities, so I do think it's not all about disability discrimination. There is 6 in our family, but thankfully ds1 only uses his wc part time.

TheHumancatapult · 20/07/2012 20:31

Yes Debs that's what they do with some family rooms what done prio to life in a chair but they don't have on disabled rooms which does seem a bit daft

OP posts:
ChopstheDuck · 20/07/2012 20:33

Do you need your partner there overnight? We usually end up with two rooms.

Couldnt you just use the separate rooms to sleep in but get ready in one of the rooms?

TheHumancatapult · 20/07/2012 20:35

Chops I was quite surprised to find that there's little charity help at all for adults it's aimed at kids

Oh and those that say it can't be down well centre parcs do it , 3 bedrooms even 4 befs accessible wetroom and family bathroom and even low worktoo in Kitchens and demands there as they book out year in advance and that's low season

It's just that were bit fed up of centre parcs as main holiday now so hence looking for alternative

OP posts:
ChopstheDuck · 20/07/2012 20:37

Had a feeling they might be more geared towards kids! Not fair is it? I can imagine things will be a lot tougher for ds as he grows up and services dry up.

TheHumancatapult · 20/07/2012 20:37

Chops premier inn tends be odd night or weekend so only have younger two so need them in same room no carer for short breaks can manage

No partner hence why was looking at carer for Butlins to allow my older ones to relax more

ChopstheDuck · 20/07/2012 20:39

Right, I got you, sorry not read whole thread.

I still would try calling haven though.

sparkly72 · 20/07/2012 20:40

Thehumancatapult i am appalled at some of the bigoted and narrow minded responses you have here - 'disabled? just put up with it love...you are being unreasonable'...i mean what planet are these people from? I suspect if you copy a link to this thread along with a letter detailing how brilliant center parcs are at meeting your families needs - then send that to the boss of Haven and of Butlins - i bet you will get a good positive response xxx :-)

forevergreek · 20/07/2012 20:41

try hoseasons

i found this
www.hoseasons.co.uk/lodges/search/all-regions?FMASK=512&HOLEXP=1&DSORT=0&TID=searchresults

was more but this was under family fun category

ChopstheDuck · 20/07/2012 20:43

Have you considered Europe? We've had some fab holidays with key camp, euro amp, select camp, and I know they do accessible caravans, tho, not sure on size or what accessible means, like you say. Tbh I would never ahve thought of accessible kitchens, only dealing with a disabled child personally!

I do hope you find something.

Exogenesis · 20/07/2012 20:43

YANBU!!! Why should you pay more or have to have two rooms when they provide family rooms for 6? Are you not allowed to have a family if you are disabled? I too am disgusted at some of the responses on here. If the boot was on the other foot and all that......

Sirzy · 20/07/2012 20:44

Have you tried parkdean holidays?

are you looking at any particular area of the country?

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 20/07/2012 20:56

i too am Shock at some of the responses. i cannot see any reason to justify why you should have to pay more for a holiday than an able-bodied parent. i am sure you don't have to pay more to travel e.g. by train even though the room needed for a wheelchair is more than the standard seat space. some very dark-age attitudes Hmm

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 20/07/2012 21:08

try these people, they are fantastic on so many levels

Hi THC, it's a shame such a wonderful, helpful and considerate poster like yourself has taken a bit of a bashing - even if it is bloody AIBU!

Sorry you're experiencing the fact that companies cannot deal with more than one disability per family and won't accommodate. It's shocking isnt it.

I know that the types of resorts your looking at, do offer accommodation for 6 people and I would definitely take up kladdkas post that it could be a DDA breach that they won't accommodate you in the same manner.

Absolutely no way should you be paying anymore than any other family to sleep the same amount of people that they claim to accommodate for.

Glad centerparks are of some help, but it makes me angry that you have to struggle when an able bodied family would be more easily accommodated, like you don't have enough to deal with.

TheHumancatapult · 21/07/2012 04:46

I'm going with if they are not challenged then they are not going know there's demand .
But it still annoys me in this day and age that has to be challenged and truth with Olympics and paraolympics where there's going to be an increase of disabled vistors . It will infact show certain companies in bad lights thinking hotel chains here
