I love the name Elsie but have had some odd reactions when I've mentioned it to people. My sister said it was pretentious and a random lady in a shop laughed out loud yesterday. I've had the wind taken out of my sails. Is it really not on to name your baby Elsie?

I really need some objective views from ordinary folk to sort this out and don't want to ask anyone else in real life. I haven't posted in baby names as I assume most have a particular interest in names over there.

Am I being unreasonable to want to name my baby Elsie?

no offence but I personally don't like it. YANBU, it's your baby, but it's a very old-fashioned name and you will probably get a lot of similar reactions.

Just my opinion.

FriskyMare · 17/07/2012 16:05

I know a 14 yo Elsie - I think it's a great name.

DublinMammy · 17/07/2012 16:05

Call your DD whatever you like, Elsie is a lovely name. I would suggest not telling anyone about names you like but just tell them what you have already called her. In other words, it's harder for people to say stupid/ rude things about the name of a child right in front of them, all cute and lovely, as opposed to perhaps thinking you actually want their opinion on what to name you as-yet-unborn baby, if that makes any sense?

fruitysummer · 17/07/2012 16:05

What is pretentious about the name Elsie?

It's not something I'd choose for my daughter, but that's because I'm hooked on the name Annie!!

I've got an Auntie Elsie, she's bloody fabulous!

I like the name Smile

ajandjjmum · 17/07/2012 16:06

It's absolutely not pretentious.

fivegomadindorset · 17/07/2012 16:06

Elsie is a great name.

LentillyFart · 17/07/2012 16:06

I love it - go for it! My childhood best friend's mum was an Elsie - fabulous woman!

boneyjonesy · 17/07/2012 16:06

I think it's lovely.Really lovely

yellowraincoat · 17/07/2012 16:07

I think it's nice.

cubbie · 17/07/2012 16:08

Meant to say, we had a Geat Aunt Elsie in our family, so Elsie just reminds me of an old woman. ( I didn't know her, she was perfectly nice, by all accounts, but that was half a century ago. She wasn't MY great Aunt, but my Gran's, who died aged 80 or so over 10 years ago.You can maybe see why I say it's very old-fashioned)

As I said, YANBU, but I myself, wouldn't do it.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 17/07/2012 16:08

Your baby, you call. Personally I hate it, but if you like then go for it. Once your DD has been around a while she will suit her name and no one will think its strange.

HumphreyCobbler · 17/07/2012 16:08

I know an Elsie. Lovely name.

If people don't like the name I have chosen then I just pity their ignorance and despise them Wink

GooseRocks · 17/07/2012 16:09

I like it.

Ailsa is also nice.

lisaro · 17/07/2012 16:09

It used to remind me of very old women but it's actually grown on me recently. Smile

YouOldSlag · 17/07/2012 16:09

I knew an Elsa once which I thought was a pretty name. Elsie just narrowly avoids sounding old lady-ish so I would say go ahead!

howdoo · 17/07/2012 16:09

I don't think it's pretentious, but I do think of it as an old lady's name.

WinkyWinkola · 17/07/2012 16:10

It's lovely. I wouldn't bother discussing name choice with people actually. There's always going to someone who is negative about it. Or nasty.

cubbie · 17/07/2012 16:10

Dublinmammy made a good point. Don't tell anyone until she is born. Your baby, your choice. I didn't intend to offend/upset you/anyone.

I, personally don't like it, but she is not my baby, and I'm not you.

mrsscoob · 17/07/2012 16:10

I think Elsie is a cool name

I know a baby Elsie, and it works for her! Go for it if you like it. I think it's lovely and is going to make a comeback

BambieO · 17/07/2012 16:11

I think it's lovely, yes old fashioned perhaps but unique and pretty. I agree with dublinmammy that's what we are doing to avoid this very issue

TheCraicDealer · 17/07/2012 16:11

I like it! Reminds me of strong women from back in the day, certainly not pretentious. It's hardly like you're going for Horatia or something which I actually quite like

PollyGoHome · 17/07/2012 16:11

My DD would have been an Elsie, but she looked like my second choice name!

I think it's fabulous, and you get so many actual bizarre names these days I'm shocked people have reacted that way.

olgaga · 17/07/2012 16:11

It used to be short for Elizabeth - I knew an Elspeth at school who preferred being called Elsie.

I think it became less popular thanks to Elsie Tanner from Corrie!
