I love the name Elsie but have had some odd reactions when I've mentioned it to people. My sister said it was pretentious and a random lady in a shop laughed out loud yesterday. I've had the wind taken out of my sails. Is it really not on to name your baby Elsie?

I really need some objective views from ordinary folk to sort this out and don't want to ask anyone else in real life. I haven't posted in baby names as I assume most have a particular interest in names over there.

Am I being unreasonable to want to name my baby Elsie?

Old lady names are lovely name her it Smile it is a nice name

SherlockGnomes · 17/07/2012 16:13

yes Ailsa is an excellent name. Possibly the best in the world. Not many of us them about! Also like Elsie and Ila (sp)

spamm · 17/07/2012 16:13

The thing about names is that babies very quickly grow into them and soon, you could not imagine calling them anything else. So you must chose a name you are happy with, because it will stick around for a very long time.

Do not worry about what others think - you need to be able to say it happily (or sometimes grumpily, or angrily) 200 times a day: Stop that, Elsie. No, Elsie. Hello, Elsie. I love you you, Elsie.

We had a name we liked for a dd and about 20 for a ds. We had a ds and chose Daniel and I could not imagine him being called anything else now. He has grown into it and it suits him perfectly. I am sure Elsie will be a wonderful name for your dd.

Astr0naut · 17/07/2012 16:14

My grandmother was called Elsie, but was always known as Irene, her middle name. Not sure why, I prefer Elsie.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 17/07/2012 16:14

I like it. It is very 'now' though.

weaknosugar · 17/07/2012 16:14

Thanks everyone, you're starting to reassure me.

lisaro - that's exactly how I see it - it used to be a name from yore but the more I thought about it the more I started to think it was a really nice name and now the old lady thing doesn't seem to apply.

I love it-a pretty and gentle name.

Primafacie · 17/07/2012 16:17

YANBU. It's not like you want to call her Ezra :)

TwllBach · 17/07/2012 16:17

Elsie is a beautiful name. Don't tell any more people!

In fact, I will be adding Elsie to my list of names - thanks OP!

olgaga · 17/07/2012 16:18

gothicangel · 17/07/2012 16:19

i love it, :)

megandraper · 17/07/2012 16:19

Lovely name. I know a 6 yr old one.

mumofjust1 · 17/07/2012 16:19

I really, really like it! It's one that would be on my shortlist for any future dd :)

Sod other people!

valiumredhead · 17/07/2012 16:20

Elsie is a lovely name, was on my list 11 years ago.

This is the last time I comment on baby names btw, I ventured over to the Baby Names board today by mistake...dear God!

Shutupanddrive · 17/07/2012 16:21

I love it too

VeremyJyle · 17/07/2012 16:21

On behalf of my nan called Elsie please don't do it. She hates her name, always wanted to be called Elizabeth, she absolutely detests it!
That said I think its quaint, along the lines of Daisy, Maisie, Gracie, Elsie iyswim Smile

ErikNorseman · 17/07/2012 16:50

Elsa or Elise are much nicer.

nymeria · 17/07/2012 16:53

It seems a bit old-fashioned to me too, wouldn't be my choice, but of course YANBU to use it if you like it.

perplexedpirate · 17/07/2012 16:53

Love it.

MidnightHag · 17/07/2012 16:55

Thumbs up from me too.

Lio · 17/07/2012 17:01

It's 'up and coming' according to something I read recently, based on the birth announcements in The Times.

Cloudbase · 17/07/2012 17:06

It's a lovely name and very pretty - I say reclaim it!

If you are going to worry, then give her your second choice as a middle name just in case. That said, I honestly think that people who spend time commenting negatively on other people's babies names have far too much time on their hands and can be happily ignored.

(not meant for people on this thread btw, as you specifically asked. Just those random people who feel they can comment on your pregnancy choices at will)

BalloonSlayer · 17/07/2012 17:08

I would go for Elsa as the name but call her Elsie.

Tanith · 17/07/2012 17:11

I can remember Emily, Grace, Ruby and Chloe being thought old-fashioned. Then there was Harry, George, Alfie and Freddie for boys.
All the rage, now!
